Resizing and Rescaling Issue
R C-R replied to Sabz's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
That seems very unlikely, so it would help if you could attach a file showing this issue with filler text like @thomaso suggested. -
How to snap to specific areas?
R C-R replied to vierdo's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
@vierdo, it might help if you could attach a simple *.afdesign file with the 2 objects shown in your first post, or failing that, at least show the Layers panel with those 2 & any other objects in the file visible. -
Yes, but what I am suggesting is it should be shown as linked to make it clear that there is a link to the original version, that its "Placement" status in the Resource Manager can be toggled between linked & embedded, its file path can be shown & via Show in Finder (or the Windows equivalent) the original can be exposed, & last but not least if the document containing it is saved & then the Linked file is deleted (or moved?) then the next time the file is opened you get a missing resource notification. Note that in the Resource Manager help file there is this: A placed image or document can have the following Status: OK—The file is up to date. Modified—The linked or remote file has been modified externally. Click Update/Refresh to get the latest version. Missing—Although still placed and displayed, the linked file has been deleted or moved externally to the app. This suggests to me that there is no meaningful distinction between placed image or document files.

Then what exactly is the difference? In the Resource Manager if I click on the BoringJPG.jpg, it shows me the file path to the original & the "Embed" button works to change it to an embedded layer. It is still an "Image" according to the Layers panel but it is a linked container & IMO should be treated as such. In the Resource Manager this is exactly the same behavior as when I place an SVG or PDF file into the document.

What specifically does this have to do with Canva buying Serif? Also, if it is Canva you want to take note of whatever you mean, why are you posting it here instead of contacting Canva directly, for instance through their https://www.canva.com/help/ page or leaving a comment at https://www.canva.com/community/?

According to the Resource Manager for JPG & similar filetypes its Placement is "Linked." Try it for yourself with this Linked Image.afphoto file & the attached In the AP2 file, use the "Edit Image" button to for example change the size of the placed image in a new tab. Now close that tab. You should get a warning that "Boring JPG.jpg has been modified," asking if you want to Save it. Click Save & choose "Save Flattened" in the next dialog. Note that the size of the original Boring JPG.jpg file has been changed, indicating it is in fact linked. So I can see no good reason why the tooltip for the placed Image file does not show that it is a linked document or display the </> badge.

When I opened a new document in AP V2 with File> Placement Policy set to Linked & used File > Place to place a JPG, GIF, PNG, or any other raster image format file in that new document I got what the Layers panel showed to be a simple Image layer, with no tooltip or icon badge hint that it was linked. Only after opening the Resource Manager did I see that it was in fact linked. So I see my mistake now. EDIT: I just noticed that when I place a SVG or PDF file in this same document, I do get a tooltip indicating it is a Linked document & those layers display the </> linked document badge. So I think it is either a bug or an oversight that for the other filetypes there is no indication in the Layers panel that they are in fact linked documents.

It isn't. The "guided by" verbiage just means the developers will consider user suggestions, which they have always done. The idea that they would reply by private mail to suggestions is ludicrous since it would mean that each & every person who makes a suggestion would have to be emailed (or PM'ed, which I think is what you really mean) individually, creating a huge amount of work with no real benefit to anybody. Nonsense. Substantial changes of necessity mean changing the basic code itself. It doesn't matter if they start with a copy of the source code to do this or not. Either way, the changes have to be incorporated into the apps.
-
But AFAIK, for single layer files like PNGs or JPEGs, it does not matter if the placement policy is set to prefer linked or embedded. They are always placed as unlinked (embedded) Image layers. So are you asking for an option that applies to both opening & placing these filetypes as just links to the original files or something else?

Pledge 4 has nothing to do with the fact that your suggestion is nothing more than a trivialization of one that has been discussed many times in the past, including the need to make substantial changes in how the UI is implemented to get it to work. Besides, it should be obvious that Pledge 4 is not significantly different from what Serif was doing before Canva bought it as far as considering user feedback & ideas when deciding what features to implement. But since you posted this to the existing Feedback & Suggestions forum, please consider what it says about searching first before starting a new topic.

This has nothing to do with paragraphs, just with the space available in the UI for words & phrases that are of different lengths in different languages (not to mention different writing directions, which is a much more difficult problem to address). This has been discussed at length & in great detail in the forums for years, so if you had just done a little research first, you would have realized your suggestion has added nothing of any practical value to this long running request. BTW, in this respect, for what should be obvious reasons there is no "new era" so your repeating that fatuous catch phrase here is just as meaningless as it was in the other topic.

There is no way to answer the questions about what will happen in the future other than to wait & see, or as @SallijaneG just wrote, time will tell. Where did you see Canva say that? AFAIK, they never have claimed they are targeting Adobe or any other company in particular, just trying to improve their share of the graphics software market.

I did not 'invite' you to do anything. I was just trying to show you why it is pointless to ask if any new feature will convince some people to start using Affinity, because the answer will always be yes.
-
There is no reason I can think of why you could not use this forum for that. It should just be a matter of clearly & carefully defining what it is you want & don't want to see in the responses you get, & what you mean by "like-minded," "serious," & so on. Combined with using the Ignore function to filter out forum members you do not consider like-minded et al, you should get close to the results you want. Other than that, all I can suggest is possibly to add a feature request for a separate forum, along with what you consider to be the guidelines and/or other measures to somehow limit it to the kind of topics, users, & so on you want to see contributing to it.

What do you think that or anything else in your last post has to do with Canva? Why are you cluttering up this topic with drivel like this? Please try to confine your posts here to things that relate to Canva & its purchase of Affinity!

Then yes, some people who are not using Affinity now will be at that time. It's the same answer you will get for any other added feature, so I still have no idea what the point of asking about it is.
