Jens Krebs reacted to peter in your captcha stinks
Captchas are terrible, I hate them too. Some sites have given up on wonky images and are asking you to answer simple questions instead.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8472/practical-non-image-based-captcha-approaches
This site has loads to mull over, I did like this one though
what tastes better, a toad or a popsicle? Should be worth looking at. The French might go for the toad option though...or is that canibalism? LOL -
Jens Krebs reacted to bikeman in your captcha stinks
It is the first time I have signed up to a forum and after several attempts at reading the captcha text I had to gove up and listen to it. Even then the pronunciation was difficult to decipher.

Jens Krebs reacted to 10on12 in Freehand Users' Requests
A quick 10 ideas after a few hours tinkering.
I realise these feature may already be staring me in the face but I'll jot them down anyhow.
1. Multiple sized documents on the same pasteboard:
The ability to have a business card, flyer, booklet or web page/facebook banner/twitter icon all on the one pasteboard is an incredibly intuitive feature. As traditional as cut and paste - Freehands killer feature. An entire job on one pasteboard gives you an incredible overview of a single project. Though judging by the size of the Pasteboard with Affinity - this is a future feature?
2. Find & Replace:
Not just text but specifically colours.
3. Export selected.
Select an object(s) on the pasteboard - File > Export Selected. Much more intuitive/easier than the Slice tool.
4. Bezigon tool:
The vector tool to rule them all. Killer tool when tracing outlines.
Haven't used a pen tool in 15 years.
5. Drag and drop Eyedropper:
Drag a colour from one object - drop it into another
6. Strokes:
Add multiple strokes/fills to an object.
Stroke text (just found it)
Expand stroke.
7. Colours
Display names of colours (Pantone/CMYK/RGB values). Custom names for colours. (show/hide names)
Freehand italicized RGB colour names in the palette to differentiate from CMYK).
Pantone swatches.
Remove unused colours - quickly cleans up a pallete.
8. Text:
Columns with proper text flow controls.
Drop caps etc etc
9. Tool Toggling:
Being able to use various key strokes to avoid the endless trip to the toolbar.
We've got the scroll on the Spacebar but we need Select tool on the CMD especially working with text.
10. Layers
Click on an object and top level layer lights up without having to expand the layers below.
Guide layer - all guides on a layer. Also, move any outline/path to the Guide layer turns it into a guide - such a great feature.
10a. Shortcut Preferences
Drop menu down to select shortcut preferences for people migrating from other applications - namely Freehand.
Loads more, but that's a start.
Fantastic BETA - I'll be sticking with it. Congratulations.

Well … we could always tell the developers that Designer and Photo (even though we haven't seen it yet) are perfect so they can move on with Publisher … ;-)

Jens Krebs reacted to Bluejohn in Tripod war of the worlds design
Just a design for the tripod chaps from war of the worlds. I'm making a interactive graphic novel based on chapter 17 "Thunderchild"
First time using Affinity. Brillant little tool, will defiantly be purchasing once released. Screw Adobe!

Thanks...I am a long time Corel draw user. I have recently switched to Mac and OSX.

Jens Krebs reacted to MaxClass in Thumbnails, How to Post them
Misspelling on my part. It should have been “Grab” which is a standard Mac application in “Utilities” for doing scene captures.
Thanks for you explanations. That should possible clear things up of others too.

Jens Krebs reacted to Andrew Tang in Change font attributes on multiple text areas
For multiple text selection - you need to be in one of the text tools to show the text context toolbar.

Jens Krebs reacted to 10on12 in Freehand Users' Requests
HI,
Like myself, most Freehand users are still running very old copies of Freehand on some very old Apple Macs… and still earning a living.
It's not because of some stick-in-the-mud attitude to change, but simply because it's still a superior tool in comparison to AI.
I personally have been hanging on for something more intuitive than AI to come along for over 10 years - I think this is probably the best I've seen yet. After using the Beta for a few hours I'm about to start my next project using it and see how far I get.
Most FH users started with Freehand back in the 80s/90s at agencies across the globe.
They're now a hugely experienced, influential bunch as this now famous thread will attest: http://www.creativereview.co.uk/back-issues/creative-review/2009/march-20091/freehand-anonymous
It would be more than worth your while engaging with them.
We don't necessarily want a Freehand "Clone" but some familiar features and workflow would help ease the transition - and it wouldn't take much to ease the transition as Adobe have now almost pulled the shutter down on all Macromedia products.
The Freehand requests seem to be all over the shop and perhaps a specific area on the Forum where we can place them all would be an idea. It would also help cultivate a FH community that you can engage with.

Jens Krebs reacted to eejits in eejits
Hey folks,
Been a wee while but I'm back at creating creatures with Affinity Designer (and paper & pencil). Instead of adding a new topic for every one I make, I thought I'd start this new thread to put them all in and show them off to you all.
So here's one for ya! :)

Need this badly.
I'm currently using CorelDRAW on Mac via Parallels and performance wise, it is not good.
Please add CDR import file feature.

Jens Krebs reacted to fsgrafix in CDR Import
I would like to be done with Corel and this is a great opportunity to switch. I have a large library of Corel files I'd like to keep working with.

Jens Krebs reacted to Ben in What would be good, when you close Affinity?!
I need to explain about our auto save, because this is very important.
MaxClass - the auto save feature does not save to your main file. It forms a working backup that is linked to your original file, so that if AD crashes or is forced to shut down, or your machine dies, you have your work in progress. Then, when you reopen your file AD will ask if you want to restore the work in progress or just open as usual.
Having a regular auto save will not slow down AD, and it will not affect your actual file in any way. Only when you do a proper save does your main file get updated. In fact, your main save will sometimes be faster as a result of regular auto saves. Our auto save also generally works in a few milliseconds, but if there is any chance of it stopping you working, we abort the auto save and postpone it until you are not doing anything. Auto save also only happens when there have been changes to your document, and depending upon what sort of changes only a part of your document may need to be auto saved.
This is something that is totally unique about our file format. It is not like PS or other apps where an autosave of a large document generally means a long wait where the app stops responding.
In AD, when you close a document you will be asked if you want to save changes. Only then is your file updated. If you chose not to save, as you would expect the file remains unchanged regardless of any changes you made in AD. When closing a document cleanly, the linked file we create is deleted. But, in the case were you didn't close the file, the work in progress is saved for you.
We have our autosave set at very low numbers. I run at 30 seconds while developing, but we generally use 300 seconds. Trust me when I tell you that you gain nothing and potentially lose everything by reducing the autosave rate or turning it off altogether.

Jens Krebs reacted to Ben in [Multi] Undo & Redo icons
I don't think you can really count Microsoft Word as an example - it's very much not Mac since it is a Windows port. We are trying to follow Mac only software for our UI design.

Jens Krebs reacted to Dave Harris in Scaling bitmaps and vector
The default (ie, without SHIFT) depends on whether the object has a natural aspect ratio. Bitmaps do; most vector objects don't. Art text does; Frame text doesn't, unless you use the also-scale-text handle in which case it does. The default is that way around so that you don't get squished text by accident, but constraining aspect ratio for rectangles by default would be annoying.
In this case we decided usability was more important than consistency.

Jens Krebs reacted to stoneworks in Speed testing tools
So comming from an intensive photoshop and illustator background can be a handicap. Downloading affinitys shortcuts really helped. The program is more Mac like which means intutive. Here is a fun scribble where I focused on what the tools could do.

Jens Krebs reacted to luigi de poggi in A rival for Corel Draw?
Having used Corel Draw on PC's since Corel 2 I'm pleased that I've found something that will allow me to do something like the work I did on that program! This does mean I can get rid of all those Apps on my Mac that I have to work on just to produce some simple designs.
The juggling robot is not my first attempt but it has allowed me to try out a variety of techniques (I like the way the gradient rotates with the object, something I found impossible in the last versions of Corel I used.
I have my £35 ready for next month!

Jens Krebs reacted to TonyB in How far are we?
We are working up to a release date early next month. After the release we will continue to improve Designer and work through the roadmap of features we have promised to implement. The updates will be free and we will continue to take feedback from the forums and hope to make Affinity Designer the best it can be.
Affinity Photo is still progressing well and we will hopefully have something to share before the end of the year.
Many thanks,
TonyB.

Super. Can't wait to pay you for the fantastic work you have put into this … actually I did the first paid little piece of work with the current beta and as it turns out I'm going to charge my client £35 for the logo adjustment. Will put it aside to purchase AD. :-)

Jens Krebs reacted to MEB in Extensibility ...
Photoshop plug-ins aren't he same as scripted based add-ons. They are programs on their own right. Affinity Photo will support them. Illustrator have some good ones too (Astute Graphics for example), but those tools can be integrated in Affinity Designer by default for a more robust base toolset and are hardly done trough scripting.
