Sure, just go to View -> Customise Tools... and at the bottom left corner of the dialog you'll see the ability to set how many columns you'd like. Anything greater than a single column also gives you enough space to stick a colour chooser on there too, so we do that automatically :)

Uninstall the beta. Install the Mac App store version first, and then install the beta if you want (you can have both installed simultaneously). You must have the Mac App Store version installed to run the beta.

    Regarding the version numbers:
There's two development trunks for Affinity. The Mac App Store version, and the betas. There's no direct relation between their numbers, that is, you can only compare the version number of a beta with another beta (the one with the biggest number is the most recent); same for the Mac App Store version.

Currently the Mac App Store version is 1.1.2.
    The latest beta is 1.0.202013

Despite the lowest number, feature wise the beta is more complete than the version in the Mac App Store. It has new features that are being tested and fine tuned - like dash lines for example - that the MAS version doesn't contain yet.

As soon as these new features are bug free and ready, the beta is then submitted to the Mac App Store for approval and becomes the new MAS version with a bigger number than the one currently in the Store. And the cycle repeats again. A more advanced beta (sometimes more than one release before being submitted to the Mac App Store again) is made available on the forums for testing and so on.

So do I! For some things the Mesh Tool is irreplaceable. MattP is working on it. But it still may take a while... All the team is busy preparing the betas of Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo, both coming soon.

A simple feature I miss: Add links (in particular a http(s):// url and a mailto: link) to text/objects, so that clicking on the it in exported PDF opens the web browser / e-mail client (or does whatever else is configured for the PDF viewer for such links).

The Text tool in Photo and Publisher will be the exact same tool. This is the benefit of our shared document and shared code strategy.

We've got lots of things underway at the moment - including preparing for the Photo beta that's getting very near, so there are a large number of changes to Designer that are not yet finished, so right now we wouldn't be happy to release another beta version. We'll see how things go over the next couple of weeks and either release an update then, or wait to release a new Designer beta alongside the Photo beta launch (as they need to be running the same codebase in order to make best use of the shared file format)

This is just a mockup, not intended to replace the existing UI, would just like it as an option (to choose themes maybe)

Thanks, I tried to remove as much chrome and color as possible and to keep the yosemite style that users are familiar with => more focus on content.

    Documentation Bug:
There's an extra Pan Tool in there that points to 'V' underneath the Zoom to Pixel Size. I will let our documentation guys know about that.

    Some hidden one:

If you have multiple documents/views opened in tabs then:
    Control + Tab = Show Next Document/View
    Control + Shift + Tab = Show Previous Document/View

Mouse Wheel + Shift = Increase/Decrease value by tens
Mouse Wheel + Option = Increase/Decrease value by tenth

Shortcuts that will be in the next beta:

    Control + Command + F = Toggle Full screen
    TAB = Toggle UI Visibility

    To do that you need:
The app suggested by Kerbs A pressure sensitive stylus for iPad (as Adonit, Wacom, Adobe or HEX3 ones) An iPad Air to get decent speed And you'll find that the so much promoted palm rejection doesn't work as well as they say (after 1 year and half I'm still waiting for a good palm rejection on Procreate for my Jot Touch 4...).  Moreover there are frustrating lags between OSX and iOS managing such resolution via WiFi.
Last of all... iPad is retina, but delivers a 1024x768 working area.

If you are ready to work on a screen as you would on a wet oil paint canvas and to damn the world every 10 minutes to get a decent stroke... Welcome...  :D

I think that for professional work the Cintiq 13D is the rock solid budget solution.

Tablets are GREAT for sketching, but still young for production.
Samsung solutions based on Android are the best in terms of ergonomy (wacom pressure layer, palm rejection trigger) but lack of professional apps to paint.
iPad have some wonderful apps as Procreate, Concepts and recently Pixelmator that can handle easily 4K pictures... But styluses are tricky and I haven't found a palm rejection feature that works seamless...

Santa Claus does exist though, surely!?! We can prove it too - the Freehand import is working really well at the moment and if you have any files you want me to test it against, then just send them over to support@seriflabs.com and we can make sure it works properly :) We'll obviously treat any files confidentially and they will be deleted after we've validated the import - we could even try to send you a .afdesign version back so you can use that file in Designer right now!

I'm going to work on Expand Stroke in a bit and also being able to use the pasteboard and see the objects on it soon. We already have functioning text wrapping (see my video here) but it's an Affinity Publisher feature so you'll need Publisher in order to activate the attribute on objects (although Designer will open and edit the document with wrapping working correctly, obviously). Text flow is yet to be added - but again it's really a Publisher thing... Text along paths will be added to Designer after launch as a free update.

I've never liked a broad 'roughen' effect - it always does the wrong thing in my experience (never quite what I wanted), so I think we might add a roughen tool that you rub over the areas of curve to roughen, and then also a smooth tool that smooths out curve segments that you apply it to: At least this way you have full control. Warping will also be added after launch as a free update, as will Pantone and professional print output.

Thanks for all your kind comments - really glad you're enjoying using Designer! :)

Jens Krebs reacted to Quarian in Confusion as to what Designer is/isn't
There appears to be a lot of confusion up here in the forum regarding what Affinity Designer can, will and/or should be able to do. Based on my observations and interpretations of replies from the programmers--granted, these are my personal observations and I invite any and every one to blow holes in them if I am wrong at their own leisure--these "limitations" are inherent because of the true functionality of the software.

Understanding that things such as Spot Color, Exporting to different flavors of PDF/X,  and Multiple artboards are options that are on the way...there are things that simply are best not to create in Designer as these functionalities will be inherent in Publisher and/or Photo.

Text content controls: there is a certain level of control for text that will be available in Publisher that is not intended to be present in Designer. Designer is not meant to have the level of control that would be present in a dedicated Layout application. I know a lot of people will say "but it's in Freehand/CorelDraw/Illustrator," but this is not the point. Adobe has it's own type foundry, to not put full capability in Illustrator (which by the way is one of the ONLY products Adobe built from the ground up as many of Adobe's products were bought and rebranded) would be to not advertise the fonts available for purchase. CorelDraw and Freehand couldn't depend on a Layout package and had to evolve these capabilities within themselves to survive in the marketplace.

Designer IS NOT Illustrator or FreeHand (YET!): Designer is still getting it's feet under it and, while I DO empathize with everyone who would wish for a fully mature program so they can stop supporting the Adobe engine on the Mac platform, Affinity is doing their best to give us a top-flight product but still has to go through some growing pains in the process. I know, as a designer myself, that there are "features X, Y and Z" that we all wish were already in AD so that we may effectively finish our projects. And they may be coming, but that is up to the devs and their timeline; remember, while they're working on Designer, they're also working on the beta for Photo and, probably, the pre-production for Publisher.

Designer IS NOT InDesign: I know, this one's painful because we'd all like to kick InDesign to the curb. InDesign (and Acrobat for that matter) is one of those applications that has VERY little real competition in the marketplace, ESPECIALLY on the Mac platform. On any Mac running anything beyond Snow Leopard, other than Quark XPress, the only true options for Graphic Design and Layout that I've found are Scribus (more on this later), PagePlus (running on a VM or in BootCamp), and an app found in the Mac App Store called MultiAd Creator Express, which has no Spot Colors but DOES have full CMYK support. Where AD is concerned, I'm using Scribus until Affinity Publisher comes out because--as one of the devs pointed out recently--AD and Scribus are using the same Color engine, LittleCMS. Which brings us to the next point:

Designer IS an Illustration Tool: And a damn good one. Affinity has rightfully focused on making Designer the best Illustration tool that it can be. Where else on the Mac is one going to find the capabilities of a Vector Editor, a Raster Editor, and a Drawing program with CMYK and Lab color management built in? Affinity Publisher will be the Layout tool that many of us want Designer to be right now. FreeHand evolved the way it did because it's partner layout tool was bought by Adobe (remember PageMaker?) and Macromedia had to keep giving it features to be more and more competitive with Illustrator. But Publisher will fill the void in the Layout/Typesetting toolset that isn't resident in AD.

As I said before, these are my personal observations based things that have been stated in the forums and the way that the software seems to work. If I'm wrong, bring it...I've been in the business for 25+ years and can admit when I'm wrong. That invitation especially includes the devs.

    Thank You For Your Time.

Jens Krebs reacted to MattP in Got DrawPlus X6 on Mac. Reasons to change???
    Hi John,

    a ) You didn't mention your age ;)

b ) Your students would need to have a Mac in order to use Affinity, so this could be a non-starter anyway?

c ) If your students do have Macs then isn't it dramatically cheaper for them to use Affinity than having to buy Parallels and a copy of DrawPlus - both of which cost much more than Affinity?

d ) Being a teacher, shouldn't one of your criteria really be about which would be better for your students to learn?

Affinity Designer is dramatically faster than DrawPlus, works nicely on your Mac and has some new ideas of its own that mean you get a nicer experience and hopefully you'll be more inclined to just play around and be creative. The results you get from all the operations in Affinity will be much better than those from DrawPlus. However, DrawPlus is at least 13 versions into its development, so is significantly more mature - for that you can read: It has a lot more tools and functions. That isn't the same as saying you can do more in it. It's the same as saying it can do more for you. If you're unsure if you can be bothered to learn a new app, then the truth is that you will probably get frustrated that feature X is missing in and then regret spending your time on this new challenge. However, if you fancy trying something new and seeing where it leads then you may find you can achieve what you want to and have a lot of fun on the way - and at the same time find out that you've actually learnt something new without thinking about it.

The easiest way to see is by just downloading the free trial - there's no strings attached and you get 10 days to see if you're still sat at the computer enjoying it by the time the trial ends. Can't say fairer than that, can we? ;)

    Thanks,
    Matt

I used one more "Like" (haven't ran out of them, yet   ;)  )

As I said before, I started out by having to program my own applications.
So, I know how efficient it is to be able to separate paradigms and when it is positive (and desirable) to blend them in.
For example, one of my old, old programs what a vectorizer routine. It "auto-traced" a bitmap, converting it to vectors that I could then use to create animations that would "in-between" two vector versions of images.
All was made in assembler and it was a great example of a symbiotic use of bitmaps and vectors.

When I started using professional applications, I fell in love with vectorial applications: autoCAD, MacDraw, MacDraft,FreeHand 1.0, Illustrator 1.0, etc.
Being able to edit stuff without having to re-paint the missing places!!! WOW!!!

And when I started using Photoshop (1.0), even after having already used many other raster painting applications, I fell in love again.

So, all my professional life was based on using the right tools for whatever job was needed.

Nowadays I use mainly Photoshop and Cinema 4D. But I always missed my beloved (and cowardly murdered) FreeHand.
From time to time, I would scan the net looking for replacements (I never liked Illustrator).
The nearest I had reached to have the feeling of having FreeHand back was with iDraw. I bought it for iPad and for my desktop.
But when I found Affinity Designer... oh!!! Bliss!!! :D

I eagerly await for the siblings, Photo and Publish.
And thank you for not trying to do a swiss army knife (although, like CartoonMike said, I love my swiss army knife... I use it almost every day) :)
