Jens Krebs reacted to Andy Somerfield in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.5.0 - Beta 10)
Status: Beta Release
Purpose: Fixes, improvements
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo
Mac App Store: Not Submitted
Download: 1.5 Beta 10 Here
This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity in which you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity Photo 1.5 cannot be opened in Photo 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.
To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.
It's also worth noting that this beta is completely file-format compatible with the recently released Affinity Designer 1.5.1 in the Mac App Store - although the above disclaimer still applies!
Improvements & Fixes
- Upgraded RAW support - over 70 new cameras supported. - Apply image - ability to drag and drop any layer from layers tab to be used as source. - Large performance improvements with Apply Image and Equations filters. - Many new functions for Equations filter. - User selectable extend mode for equation distortion filter. - New tone mapping presets (you may need to run with Ctrl held and clear tone map presets to see them). - Slightly improved macro page icons (more to come). - When playing back a macro from the Macro page, it will offer the playback interactive controls on a panel (like the library panel). - Macro recorded equirectangular live projection now expose their arguments for interactive playback. - Numerous other commands offer more interactive playback options when macro recorded. - When selecting macro parameters to be shown at playback, you can now give them custom names. - Size and location of pixel selection is now available to Equations filter as sx,sy,sw,sh. - Fixed layout issues in Preferences panel. - Font fly-out fixes / improvements. - Stock page cosmetic fixes on Sierra. - Effects panel - minor cosmetic fixes. - Fixed artefacts with Rectangular To Polar command. - Fixed de-fringe filter in 32bit RGB. - White balance now works properly in 32bit Develop. - FFT denoise now works properly in 32bit RGB. - Lighting filter works properly in 32bit RGB. - Fixed histogram scaling. - Fixed weird text boxes on the Spherical filter. - Numerous other small cosmetic improvements. We are working on the Linked Layers functionality and a couple of other final improvements at the moment - these will be released soon. At that point, we will enter the release candidate phase for Photo 1.5. Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta! Affinity Photo Team  -
Jens Krebs reacted to MattP in Free updates and the future of Affinity apps
There are no plans at all to move to a subscription. The free updates will happen for as long as version 1.x is in active development and at the moment we have a long way to go with both Designer and Photo before we are even going to start writing version 2.x, so I don't think you should be too concerned about not getting value for money at this point :)
Hope that eases some of your concerns,
Matt

Jens Krebs reacted to MarcelP102 in iPad UI for Windows version?
The video showcasting the iPad version of Affinity Photo looks great! I'm wondering, since you guys also bringing your suite of apps to Windows. will there be a touch UI option like the iPad version? So we can use it with the Surface Pro or the recently announced Microsoft Surface Studio.
Thanks

Jens Krebs reacted to PepGold in I really need a Glyphs panel
I really a glyphs panel. So that I can select a specific glyphs. The Typography -> Show all font features are great. But if you have a font with a lot of option, or special display characters, or just need a special character. You can't select that.
And, sidenote. In the typography panel, the tekst and checkbox are overlaying.

Jens Krebs got a reaction from Patrick Connor in MacOs vs. Windows
I can understand the "tech from yesterday" — comparing the new MacBooks with the current Surfaces and the currentiMacs with Microsofts Surface Studio makes me cry.
In the last couple of years Apple has been seriously behind the new technologies and forced some things that make absolutely no sense (laptops with just one single USB-C port, the new trackbar thingy that forces you to look at the keyboard instead of knowing your keys and hitting them blind, the fact that the computers still dont have touch screens or the trackpads come at least with stylus support, the fact that the most expensive iMacs and MacPros are not able to run any VR hardware because of the graphic cards restrictions, the fact that most computers cannot be upgraded anymore with extra RAM or a new harddrive, the absolutely absymal battery life of the Apple Watch, the new OS that deletes data from your computer and clutters your Cloud storage if you don't contioualy deactivate the feature …).
Don't get me wrong, I really like Apple computers and the operating system, I switched from Windows in 2005 and never looked bakc … until recently … the grass seems getting greener and greener in the other garden.

Jens Krebs reacted to Tamerlin in Surface Studio
It does look like Microsoft is trying to go after Apple's traditional market...
And here's the thing... they're getting it about 90% right. I used a Surface Pro 3 for the past couple of years as a mobile editing machine, and it did well for editing HD video as well as photos, though it didn't have the muscle for 4K. One of my friends bought a Surface Book, and that's turned out to be a great mobile editing system also... my biggest criticism of the Surface line in general so far is that Microsoft has been avoiding Thunderbolt. Hopefully they'll add it to the newest models, but so far they're resisting.
My new machine is a Razer Blade Stealth, 2016 model... and I plan on adding a Razer Core + GTX 1080 in the near(ish) future via Thunderbolt 3 so that I can work with Resolve and 8K footage on it.
IMO Microsoft is really nailing it with the Surface line. If they embrace eGPU the Surface Studio could become quite popular as a basis for a mid-range colorist's workstation.

That is one sexy computer ... I'm a loyal Apple user, but this machine is simply amazing and will make me switch to Windows, if it actually works as advertised. Can't wait to try Affinity Designer and Photo on this screen!

Jens Krebs reacted to Gaz in Affinity Publisher
I'm looking forward to seeing the Beta as well.
Creating a DTP package from scratch must be incredibly difficult. Adobe took years developing theirs and InDesign 1.0 was horrible. Best not to rush things. :)

Jens Krebs reacted to Seneca in Why Publisher shouldn't be released anytime soon
I don't at all agree with the title of this whole discussion. I think that it should be released as soon as possible and I like Dave's pragmatic approach quoted above.
I also happen to think that an early beta release would put an end to a lot of unnecessary speculations and would allow us to just get on with it as we have with the Designer and Photo.

Jens Krebs reacted to MJSfoto1956 in Why Publisher shouldn't be released anytime soon
In print, multi-columns is standard. In web, single-column is standard (especially wrt new JS frameworks like Knockout). There is a real need to "repurpose" content across multiple channels. However, that is the role of a CMS, not layout tool. So I'd be happy with layout/rendering tools that could (optionally) be driven by XML/JSON.

Jens Krebs reacted to Patrick Connor in Why Publisher shouldn't be released anytime soon
I hope we don't. At the price the software sells for, the few people who need that in Designer may have to buy Publisher... but it's not my call.

Jens Krebs reacted to Dave Harris in Why Publisher shouldn't be released anytime soon
Thanks for your comments. I have to say that making a clone of InDesign is not our goal; we have our own vision. Also, our plan is to release Publisher as soon as it has enough to be useful to someone. We won't wait until it can do everything InDesign can do and more. As a result, you can expect the first version to be quite basic. In the same way that Designer is still missing things like arrow heads which are crucial to some people, Publisher will be missing features that some of you will need. I don't want you to think we are already sitting on a basic Publisher and not releasing it because we want to add more advanced features first.
Publisher is delayed simply because it is taking us longer than we expected. I can't say too much about what we have and haven't done, but here's an example: text styles are a crucial Publisher feature, and the reason they are in Designer 1.5 and not earlier is because they weren't developed earlier. In general, when we have a Publisher feature complete that we think also belongs in Designer, we'll include it in Designer as soon as it is ready. (The caveat is that there are some features we know you'd like to see in Designer, that we don't think belong in it.)
I'm sorry it is taking so long, and I'm especially sorry that our past timelines for Publisher were so wildly optimistic. Our original vision of three apps all sharing a file format and a common way of working, was something we were very excited about. That exuberance spilled into some fairly delirious announced schedules. We will get there. We're still excited about the vision and determined to bring it about, just as soon as we can.

Status: Release Candidate 2
Purpose: Stability
Requirements: None
As this is a beta release, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. Jens Krebs reacted to Ash in Affinity Designer Workbook
Hi All,
For a number of months now behind the scenes we have been producing a workbook for Affinity Designer, and I'm pleased to let you know it is available from today!
This is a big book - 448 pages, in hardback - and it includes fantastic projects created by some top designers, as well as a comprehensive reference to all our tools and panels, and a set of core skills tutorials.
You can find more information about it here.
Usual price is $49.99 / £37.99, but we are running a 20% discount for the launch making it only $39.99 / £29.99 (+ shipping and handling).
It's worth pointing out that right now the book is only available in English but we do plan to do a German version which should be available towards the end of the year.
Hope you like it!
Thanks,
Ash

Fixes:
Resolved Font enumeration crashes at startup, including utterly broken fonts that trigger a system refresh of the font list when enumerated! Fix for Mavericks issue with the new Export Persona Fix for Assets being dropped into the Asset Panel even when it is collapsed - which explains why some people are seeing an inability to move objects to certain areas of the screen (it's because the panel is still getting tested as though it was not collapsed and you're creating assets every time you move!) Fix for crash seen when creating Assets from objects like Masks that perhaps have no dimensions by themselves Fix for renaming Assets causing a crash Fix for inability to change paragraph leading -
Jens Krebs reacted to MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5.2 - Beta 3)
Hi everyone :) I explained before that there are certain critical issues that are actually causing crashes for users and we wanted to concentrate on getting everyone up and running first before looking into other things - I think we're there now (with the exception of one Mountain Lion issue with the Export Persona) so hopefully we can look into the other bugs that have been brought to our attention.
Thanks again for everyone's patience - there are always wrinkles at every major version launch, and all we can try to do is learn from it and change some of our methods...
Hope that makes sense? :)
