    Status: Customer Beta
    Purpose: Fixes & Minor Improvements
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: 1.5.5 Beta 1 Here

The purpose of this version is to improve the stability of the released product. It contains no dangerous changes, only fixes and minor usability improvements. We would recommend that all users download and use this version. It should be considered more reliable than the current Mac App Store version (1.5.4)

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

    Fixes/Improvements
Controversial change to pixel documents: 100% view now maps document pixels directly to screen pixels. If you have a retina Mac you will now see 100% view showing a pixel in the document on each pixel on your display. Wireframe view mode now allows the user to select locked items by click or marquee. Basically, if you're in wireframe view and you can see it, you can now click it to select it. This makes wireframe view much more useful for toggling on/off to select specific items in the document. With rulers visible and a high-frequency input device such as a pen tablet (or a mouse in macOS Sierra) the rulers would make the document update very slowly, this has been resolved. SVG export of gradients is now more compatible with QuickLook. Stability fixes for text. Fixed bug applying OpenType contextual rules. Fix for crashes with 32bit documents on Lion and Mountain Lion. Fix for right-clicking a text object in the Text tool failing to select the current word if the user is over the caret. Improved PSD import/export of HSL adjustments. Improved PSD import of fill layers with empty stroke masks and also parse line origination data. Import badly-formed PSD files created by Marmoset. Fix for occasional crash with embedded documents. PDF export fix for Overprint flag which was not getting unset at certain times, leading to items unintentionally overprinting. Fix for system chime noise when holding Cmd+Alt+Space. Fix for layers panel showing incorrect document information when changing from Separated window mode to normal mode if multiple documents are open. Fix for some images opening and saying they are 1dpi

    Status: Customer Beta
    Purpose: Stability
Requirements: A valid product key, issues when Windows version was purchased.

As this is a beta release, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is worth noting that files created in Affinity Designer 1.5 cannot be opened in Affinity Photo 1.4, which means that although files created with the Windows beta can be opened in the Mac AppStore version of Designer (currently on 1.5.4) they cannot be opened in the latest Mac App Store version of Affinity Photo, instead you will need the latest macOS 1.5 beta.

We hope you enjoy the latest build, and as always, if you've got any problems, please don't hesitate to post here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks once again for your continued feedback.

If you have a general question about the software, please head over to the Questions Forum, or if you have any suggestions, please head over to the Feature Requests forum.

One problem with this kind of comparison is, they are always incomplete. One can easily build such a bullet list which makes any of the compared programs appear to come out on top.

Example: Which of the programs has anything like Illustrator's Pattern Brushes? Which of the programs are able to apply multiple strokes and fills (not just effects) to a single path?

Those are two of Illustrator's claims-to-fame. Do they make Illustrator the "best" vector drawing program?

To answer that, consider this: Would you call Illustrator's user interface--while actually drawing--the best of the bunch?

    So how about this feature:

Able to define a Line in terms of length and angle.

In Illustrator, get the Line Tool and simply click somewhere. A modal dialog appears with fields in which you can enter those two values. Click OK and there's your line, 5.9375 inches in length at 25.75 degrees.

But is this actually more elegant than Affinity's treatment? Think about it.

And where is ACD Canvas in this comparison? By what logic is it left out? Or Xara Designer? Or Corel Technical Designer? I could give you a long list of features in any of those which are "missing" in Affinity Designer. But guess which one I see most hope in for actually moving the lethargic vector drawing segment forward at long last?

Here's what I see in Affinity: evidence of careful forethought. Is it perfect? Nope, not even so far, and it still has a long way to go to flesh out functionality. The measure of true interface elegance is whether it can survive through the addition of a full feature set. We'll see. But at least someone is actually trying.

As a user who experimented a lot with vector graphics over the years, I find it might be helpful for others for me to share the differences between Illustrator, DrawPlus, Designer, and CorelDraw. A lot of you might be unfamiliar with one or more of the programs. There are things I like about each and things I do not like. Onur has decided to help out in giving me background to CorelDraw since that is one I am unfamiliar with.

I will explain why I prefer certain programs and why I don't prefer them with the features that I find most or partially helpful. Here are 26 I came up with.

Jens Krebs got a reaction from ldonelson in Serif, you have a cross-platform solution: Steam
Considering the price, I don't mind (actually didn't mind, I already bought the Windows version for my other computer) , paying twice to use it on OSX and Windows -- afterall the Windows version is a separate product, made by a seperate group of people, and they've done a great job and deserve a warm dinner once in a while too.

If Affinity did come for a price of 200-400 Pounds (which is, what other companies in this league are charging, just look at the prices of Adobe for a year or a new version of Corel Draw), I would sing a different song -- however, if you use the software for personal things, a one-off payment of 40£ should be affordable, if you use it professionally and make money with it you can write it off taxes and will probably also earn the cost back in an hours work.

It's a great software for a grwat price and I don't think people should expect to get even more.

Steam is, by the way, not a good idea in my opinion - Steam is a games store and I haven't seen any non-game software on it that falls in the category of semipro or pro software. Going there would send a VERY wrong message in regard of the target audience and basically would prevent the Affinity line being taken serious in the graphics design market.

Why can't you just let it go?
Currently, there is no Affinity Publisher, so, if you need to do DTP, use something else. When the software is ready to test, give it a go and see if you like it.
I personally am very happy with Photo & Designer and I'm sure I'll be happily using Publisher too when it comes out, but until there is actually something to talk about, it's not worth getting adjutated about it.

    Hello everyone,

This is the first in a series of customer beta builds intended to improve the stability of the new 1.5.1 App Store version of Affinity Photo. We'll be doing these for a few weeks, then we will update the Store version. This beta will sit alongside the App Store version and not interfere with it - although your settings will not be shared between the two versions.

As this is a stability beta, it is suitable for production work and should be used in preference to the App Store version if you need any of the fixes it contains.

    Fixes

    - Fixed a TIFF issue which was preventing people from working on existing documents, or loading some TIFF files properly.
    - Fixed spelling issue that inserted the correctly spelt world without deleting the incorrect word.

    Thanks,

Hi everyone,   We are wrapping up here - RC5 is likely to be the final beta before Photo 1.5 goes to GM later this week. We’d like to take this chance to once again offer our sincere thanks to everyone who has helped us with this release :)   If your feature / improvement / bug fix hasn’t made it into 1.5, don’t worry - 1.6 will be a much shorter run and will focus on performance, stability and completeness only (ie. no headline new features) - kinda like the OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard release by Apple, from days gone by.. More about that later..
    Fixes / Improvements:

    - Fixed numerous cosmetic issues with the Media Browser. - Fixed loading OnOne TIFF files. - Fixed undo / redo issues in equirectangular, perspective projection tools. - Fixed 32bit PSD files containing masks. - Fixed popovers flickering on close. - Fixed Outer Shadow effect bug. - Fixed FFT denoise panel [ ] keys. - Fixed layers tab not updating properly when switching to / from separated mode. - Fixed “bing” sound when using the zoom key combo. - Fixed Clarity in 32bit mode.   - Touch Bar improvements. - Develop improvements. - Focus merge tweaks. - Media browser can now preview .afphoto, .afdesign files.   - Localisations, including some layout tweaks. - Updated help.   Affinity Photo Team       Here's a recap of the new features in Photo 1.5, along with beta versions of the (excellent, in my opinion) tutorial videos which will accompany the features...   Focus Merge Support   Focus merging allows you to generate a detailed composite image from a number of images focused at differing lengths. Use File -> New Focus Merge to get started.   Video tutorials: Focus Merging Focus Merge Retouching Focus Merging Bracketed Images   HDR Merge Support   HDR merging lets you create a deep, unbounded 32-bit image from a number of exposure bracketed source images. Use File -> New HDR Merge to get started.   Video tutorials: HDR: Merging and Tone Mapping HDR: Tone Map Presets HDR: Panoramas HDR: Preprocessing HDR: Advanced Editing HDR: Ghosts Removal   New 32bit RGB Editing Mode   Photo now offers a full compositing / editing environment for 32bit unbounded images.   Video tutorials: HDR: 32-bit Editing   32bit Develop   Photo can now Develop RAW files directly into a 32bit document - so all highlights / shadows are preserved and recoverable at any time.   Video tutorials: 32-bit Raw Development   OCIO (OpenColorIO) Support   Photo now support end-to-end OCIO colour workflows.   Video tutorials: OpenColorIO Setup OpenColorIO Adjustment   Tone Mapping Persona   Full tone mapping Persona for both HDR and LDR images. This is obviously best used with an image merged by HDR merge - although you can use it on any image.   Video tutorials: Regular Tone Mapping   OpenEXR / HDR (Radiance) / 32bit TIFF Import / Export   Photo can now import and export .hdr (Radiance, RGBE) and .exr (OpenEXR) images. It correctly deals with 0-alpha cases (as per the OpenEXR spec) and generally operates in linear space. It support multi-layer EXR files and offers control (through Preferences) over alpha association and premultiplication.   Video tutorials: OpenEXR Multichannel Import/Export OpenEXR Import Options   Macros   Using the View -> Studio -> Macro and View -> Studio -> Library menu items, you can access new panels which will allow you to record actions, save them, then play them back later. You can also store them in a handy gallery.   Video tutorials: Macros Macros: Equations   Batch Processing   Using File -> New Batch job, you can queue up processing on a large number of files. You can resize, convert format and apply any number of macros to each file. The batch processing happens in the background - so you can continue working whilst the jobs are processed.   Video tutorials: Batch Processing   Live Projections   Photo 1.5 contains a new mechanism which allows you to edit an image in different spatial domains - we currently support the “Equirectangular” domain (360 pano - Ricoh Theta, etc.). You can use all tools when editing - and you can convert back once you have edited. This is especially useful for cleaning up stitching artefacts, or artefacts at the zenith / nadir of the image. Use the options in Layer -> Live Projection to get started.   Video tutorials: 360 Live Editing 360 Advanced Editing 360 Retouching 360 Multiple Views Live Perspective Projection    Improved Pixel Tool   The pixel tool is improved in 1.5 - you can hold shift when dragging to constrain the direction of painting (sorry we did not get this working sooner!). You can also select what happens when you hold Alt and drag - erase to transparent, erase to background colour, or erase to whatever the nominated snapshot / history location is (like in the Clone tool).   New “Pixel Art” Document Resizing   Photo now contains an alternative way to resize a document - using well known pixel-art resampling algorithms. If you work with pixel art and want to use this feature, it’s located under the Document menu.   Video tutorials: Pixel Art Resize    New “Accumulation” Brush Dynamics   Many users have asked for “Opacity Jitter”. For us, opacity is a constant thing and will remain constant. However, we have added a new property to brushes - “Accumulation” - which should allow you to get what you need     :)   Text Styles   Affinity Photo now has the same Text Styles support as Designer - it’s all shared code so it should work right out of the box     :)   New Marquee Modes (Polygonal, Magnetic)   Photo now has 3 modes for the freehand selection tool - Freehand, Polygonal and Magnetic.   Even more RAW cameras supported   Over 70 new RAW cameras are supported.   Improved Metadata Mining   Our detection of RAW / JPEG / etc. metadata has been upgraded and some serious bugs have been fixed.   Massive Improvements to Export Persona   Our Export Persona has seen huge upgrades in this cycle - you now have total control of exactly what resolution sets get exported. You can also use our handy batch export builders to quickly generate content for external consumption - ie. Xcode .assets - even Spline compatible metadata can be generated!   Layered TIFF Interop   Users have constantly asked us to support “Layered TIFF”. Layered TIFF is not a thing. TIFF with embedded data is a thing - and I’m happy to report that we now import embedded PSD / Affinity data and can write TIFF with embedded Affinity data.   Halftone Filter   We have a marvellous new halftone pattern filter in 1.5 - it can approximate monochrome, colour, circular and line halftones.   Video tutorials: Halftone Scanlines Effect   Improved Apply Image Filter   Users can how use the current layer as the source for Apply Image - or drag any layer from the layers tab into the dialog to use that as thr source. We also offer handy equations in the filter to control how channels are transferred - in an arbitrary colour source.   Video tutorials: Apply Image Apply Image: Equations   Improved Select Sampled Colour Filter   You can now select by intensity in the select sampled colour tool.   Equations Filter   A new Equations Distortion filter allows users to create custom spatial filters.   Video tutorials: Equations filter Macros: Equations   Dust & Scratches Filter   Many user have asked us for a “Dust & Scratches” filter - so we have made one. It’s extremely useful for removing sporadic small defects in images. Please let us know if it works for you.   Video tutorials: Dust & Scratches Filter    “Edit in Affinity Photo” Photos extension   This is something which we didn’t think we could do - a Photos extension for Mac OS 10.9 and above which simply allows you to use the full Photo app to edit your images - and stores the changes you have made as a layered document.   New Colour Picker Tool   After literally thousands of requests, we have implemented a dedicated picker tool for colours.   New Clone Sources Panel   We now have a new studio panel which allows you to store up an unlimited number of global sources for the Clone / Healing brush - it even works across multiple documents.   Video tutorials: Clone Sources Clone Sources: Texture Creation   Direct PSD Write-Back   One of the most requested features - direct write-back to PSD. A number of 3rd party DAM applications will happily deal in PSD - but until now, Photo required you to File -> Export for PSD. No longer! You can now just hit File -> Save! You will need to turn this on - in File -> Preferences - please read the warning there carefully!   Video tutorials: Direct PSD write-back (round tripping)   No Thumbnails Option   This is more a Designer feature, but I promised it some time ago so here it is - you can choose (in Preferences) not to write out a thumbnail with your documents. This has the advantage of making your documents use less space - but obviously you won’t get Finder thumbnails, etc.   Improved Vectorscope   Our old HSL vectorscope is no more - replaced by a vastly more appropriate Rec.709 YUV scope with an improved graticule     :)   Improved Photoshop Plugin Support   We have found a significant bug with our plugin code - it has been fixed     :) We are now finding the majority of plugins work properly.   Multi-monitor Colour Profile Support   Sorry it took so long to get this fixed - we now can profile different on different monitors.   Adjustment Performance Improvements   Found and fixed a simple issue which made changing adjustment parameters appear to be slow. Fixed.   This update also includes literally hundreds of fixes and small improvements, some of which are listed below:   - User control over two pass rendering on Retina devices. - PSD import / export improvements. - PDF import / export improvements. - Snapping improvements - candidate-free snapping, gaps-and-spans (Alt key in Move Tool), so much more! - Performance and stability improvements for macOS Sierra.   Download: 1.5 RC5

We are still waiting for some localisation assets before we can release the Photo 1.5 update - so we've carried on fixing things and improving things in certain areas of the app. We'll continue to do this - including fixes for things reported in the RC release threads (thanks guys) - as long as is possible. We have a few things still on our hit list - RAW regressions being at the top of that list..

    Fixes:

    - Added optional noise reduction for HDR Merge.   - Prevented default snapshot creation for HDR Merge, Panorama. - Reduce Tone Mapping memory usage. - PDF font handling improvements. - TouchBar improvements - mainly just missing icons left to do, time permitting.   - Fixed issues with UI not updating properly when switching between integrated / separated mode. - Fixed weird cursor issues in the FFT denoise panel. - Fixed cosmetic issues in the Batch panel. - Fixes for recording the addition of filter, adjustment and mask layers in macros. - Fixed inverted slider in Haze Removal panel. - Fixed some images reporting 1dpi on load. - Fixed right click crash in layers panel with no document loaded. - Fixed further crashes with font flout. - Fixed “Share” menu item reporting spurious errors which are not real. - Fixed brush tools in Panorama.   - Help improvements.   More as it happens folks! Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta - we couldn't do it without you   :)   Affinity Photo Team          Here's a recap of the new features in Photo 1.5, along with beta versions of the (excellent, in my opinion) tutorial videos which will accompany the features... No Thumbnails Option   This is more a Designer feature, but I promised it some time ago so here it is - you can choose (in Preferences) not to write out a thumbnail with your documents. Download: 1.5 RC4

Jens Krebs got a reaction from gabrielpb1 in Serif, you have a cross-platform solution: Steam

Jens Krebs reacted to R C-R in Affinity Publisher
Two comments, submitted with all due respect for all who have an opinion about all this:

    1. The operative phrase in the Affinity blurb about Publisher is "will be crafted." It is somewhat pointless to speculate at this point about what that will or won't be included in the app or to what extent it help professionals working in how many of the various fields mentioned.

They have invited those interested to participate in the Publisher beta program when they start that in 2017. Why not wait until then to offer feedback about which features need further development to meet the needs of whatever pro field(s) you are working in?

    2. I believe there are many ways to get "professional results" & several ways to define that. An "appropriate degree" does not guarantee anybody will get them, nor prevent those without a degree from doing so. If someone has the imagination & the talent to make a living doing this kind of work, what does it matter if they have a degree or not? Either way, are they not professionals?

Jens Krebs got a reaction from cloudbusting in Affinity Publisher
Why can't you just let it go?
Currently, there is no Affinity Publisher, so, if you need to do DTP, use something else. When the software is ready to test, give it a go and see if you like it.
I personally am very happy with Photo & Designer and I'm sure I'll be happily using Publisher too when it comes out, but until there is actually something to talk about, it's not worth getting adjutated about it.

Jens Krebs reacted to TonyB in Affinity Designer for Windows has launched!
Affinity has now become officially cross-platform with the launch of Affinity Designer for Windows. It was our trail-blazing first app, and since being launched on Mac the response we have had to it has been unbelievable. It’s consistently been the top paid-for design app on Mac since launch, we’ve won a coveted Apple Design Award and there have been thousands of 5-star customer reviews on the Mac App Store.

For many designers, Affinity Designer has become their go-to app for everything from creating concept art, print projects, logos and icons to UI design, web graphics and mock-ups. And because Affinity Designer on Windows matches the Mac version feature-for-feature, PC users can now experience the same thrilling speed, incredible tools and supreme accuracy which has given Affinity Designer that formidable reputation.

    Many thanks

Jens Krebs reacted to Andy Somerfield in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.5.0 - Beta 11)
    Status: Beta Release
    Purpose: Fixes, improvements
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: 1.5 Beta 11 Here

This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity in which you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity Photo 1.5 cannot be opened in Photo 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

It's also worth noting that this beta is completely file-format compatible with the recently released Affinity Designer 1.5.3 in the Mac App Store - although the above disclaimer still applies!

    Improvements & Fixes

    - New preferences options (under Colour) for handling of OpenEXR (separate alpha, post-divide alpha, perturb zero alpha).
    - Layered OpenEXR files were coming in upside down (layer-wise). Fixed.
    - OpenEXR import should default to a transparent background.
    - Fixed big problems when trying to use any brush-based tool on more than one layer at once.
    - Fixed clone tool hiding the source marker under while dragging.
    - Information panel now shows alpha values.
    - Fixed issues when importing TIFF with malformed DPI tag.
    - Improved X3F focus-pixel removal for more modern cameras.
    - General Tone Mapping stability improvements.
    - Respect tone curve preference when doing HDR Merge, Focus Merge.
    - Develop now properly respects user-chosen profile defaults.
    - Focus and HDR merge now respects user-chosen profile defaults.
    - Fixed further crash issues with the Font dropdown.
    - Improvements to numerous filter which use Gaussian samplers.
    - Fixed more issues with badly formed TIFF being loaded as RAW (sigh).
    - Fixed importing of PSD gradient map adjustments.
    - Alt-Click on the “Add mask” button in the layers panel to add an empty mask.
    - Disabled buttons in Macro panel when no document is loaded.

    - Numerous PSD import / export improvements.
    - Gradient tool now works on 32bit masks.
    - Show bad equations in red when using Equations filter (incomplete).
    - Avoid crashes when “Resize Pixel Art Document” is used on massive documents.
    - Improved macro panel icons.
    - Ctrl-Alt drag in brush tools should be limited to 4096, not 1024.
    - Fixed issues where Live Filter panel would not reflect opacity, blend mode correctly.
    - The “red button” should never auto-commit filters.
    - Fixed more white scroll bar bugs in macOS Sierra.
    - OpenEXR can now be exported from non-32bit documents.
    - Fixed terrible “Save with History” problems when user has deleted from a layer using a pixel selection (sorry!).
    - Fixed crash in Apply Image when using equations in LAB format.
    - Macro recorder can now record “Resize Document”.
    - Numerous minor cosmetic improvements.
    - Numerous other small stability improvements.

    - Improved localisations.
    - Improved help.

Unfortunately, the “Link Layers” feature has missed the cut - as has the “Pause Macro” feature. Apologies for this - we will try to get them into a beta as soon as possible after Photo 1.5 has shipped.

Photo will go to RC at the start of next week. We are still working on a number of bugs / improvements until then.

Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta!
