    Hi,
just wanted to let you guys know how incredibly impressed I am with how Publisher is developing -- I am really happy with you adding some extra features and having a really long beta cycle rather than pushing out a software that cannot compete with others. Love the reworked master pages, the search--replace enhancements (RegEx, RegEx, RegEx!) and the new pinned objects!
It's about time that Adobe gets some competition in the pro market (there's lot's of semi-pro applications out there with tons of templates and flashy features, but nothing except Quark Xpress that can actually do what InDesign does).
    Thanks for your hard work!

Jens, I noticed occasionally  3 unexpected reasons for enormous PDF file size:
    1. Document color set to 16 bit –> resulted in uncompressed images
    2. Font issues –> resulted in doubled text frames in PDF: in the foreground as text in the background copy as curved.
    3. .afpubs not created in AfPub but from imported / opened PDFs.
    Worth to look at possibly.
If you like, upload a test .afpub with pieces of you affected .afpub. I'd like to look at it. Also a few pages of the huge PDF would be interesting to look at.

Hi, did you try this settings (attachment) making 72 dpi? Makes a quarter of normal settings with 1.7. (pics only: 20 MB; 1.7: 100 MB; 300 dpi, 1.7: 300 MB and more in bilinear). Reg., lars

Title says it all ... I forget to switch from "all spreads" to "all pages" EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and have to create every PDF twice.
Would be great, if this setting could be set to a standard and being saved within the app (not per document).

I had the same issue with PagePlus so I would imagine it's the PDF library Serif use.
There are online PDF compressing tools but I purchased NX Powerlite Desktop which appears to reduce files to roughly 20% which works for web downloads and in many cases works for sending to printer with acceptable reduction in quality but YMMV of course.

    Purpose: Improvements, Fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Publisher
    Mac App Store: Not submitted
    Download: Download
    Auto-update: Not Applicable
    ---
    Hi,
We are pleased to announce that the first customer beta of Affinity Publisher (1.7.2.420) is now available as a download from the link above. Build 420 has replaced Build 419 which has been withdrawn.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app please note that the beta will install as a separate app alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
The beta is an incremental update to the 1.7.1 store version. We recommend that you use this beta in preference to your store version if you are affected by any of the issues listed below.
If you have any problems using this version please make a new topic in this forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Please feel free to leave general suggestions and comments in the Discussion Forum.

    StudioLink
StudioLink in this Beta requires Beta versions of Designer and Photo to function. We are hoping a Designer Beta will become available for macOS soon.

The released Designer never had hyphenation. I don't think Designer beta did either, but if it did, it was an accident. Designer has gained some new text features from Publisher (eg, lists), and hasn't lost any.

Are you seriously thinking about spending or not spending $40 for a pro level dtp software because you THINk there MIGHT be a paid update next year or not?
Either you like Publisher and want to spend the money, or you want to wait until it has a specific feature that you are currently missing and wait until then.
Don't overthink what could be and that you could be disappointed about something that might or might not happen next year and could or not could cost you 40 bucks that you don't need to spend if you don't need or want the new features or not that might or might not get programmed ... this kind of doubt and overthinking just makes you unhappy.

I am a native speaker, and I too had the same misunderstanding. I thought it might even have some kind of conditional formatting (that would be great!).
I am happy to just learn the terminology of a given application as long as it is fairly reasonable. "Decorations" is perhaps not the best, but it does get my curiosity enough to see what it's about, and then once I do, I know what I can expect of it and how to find it again later.
If I were naming it, I would have called it "Borders and Shading," because that is precisely what it is. On the other hand, maybe Serif has additional features planned for the section, where a more broad term like "Decorations" will eventually make sense. Or maybe they just named it poorly the first time and now they will have to add new features to it as though to say, "See, we named it right after all." I'm okay with that.

Placing a PDF as "passthrough" is so normal everyday thing that I thought it certainly is in every PDF code library. Turns out, it is not.

    There are two points here:
Firstly, I'm seeing errors in placed PDFs even when I have all the necessary fonts installed.
Secondly, PDFs can be placed correctly in InDesign, Illustrator, XPress, Apple Pages, MS Word, etc etc, even if the correct fonts are not installed on your system.

Affinity's ability to turn PDFs into editable content is welcome, but the ability to place a PDF on a page as an 'image', accurately,  is paramount to a DTP app.

Paragraph decorations can include filled boxes as well as rules. I suppose we could have called it "Rules and Boxes".

I'm kind of ok with it.  It looks like it's being used consistently throughout the UI.   Picking up a new application usually entails learning how the developers named stuff.

Jens Krebs got a reaction from jmwellborn in About that One-Time Payment for your Apps
I prefer one-off payments -- simply because when a subscription ends, I cannot use the software at all and cannot open or edit my own files, without subscribing again.
Corel had a decent solution anwhilenago, where subscribers got to keep the most recent version perpetually (but no upgrades and support any more), when thensubscription had lasted at leastntwo years -- I'd be fine with that.
As things are, I'm happy to pay every couple of years for a new version (because - contrary to Adobe - I trust Serif putting some nice new features on each big upgrade).
Currently Serif is making money by sellong their apps and, through the constant updates and their coverage, expanding their user base. Also, with rougly one new app per year, there's a certain cash flow that holds until version 2.0 where the cycle starts over. This is, by the way, how software was developed until a couple of years ago, with big paid upgrades every two or three years and free smaller updates inbetween -- forces developers to actiäually deliver good updates / upgrades and to manage money a bit diffrently, but it's a better model for everyone in my opinion.

    Yes, yes, yes!
Maybe just diffrent colours? I have just starting real life work with Publisher and already lost count on how often I accidentally applied (no paragraph style) instead of (no character style).
  23. Thanks
Jens Krebs reacted to Daniel Gibert in Add a visual separation between paragraph and character styles
Please, add a visual separation between paragraph and character styles on the studio panel. Maybe a separation line, a blank bar, a blank space or a segmented scroll/window. The ¶ and a symbols are very subtle for a quick look at the panel. I think is easy to implement and is a silly but useful aid to identify styles.
When you have a long list of styles is hard to detect where one end and another star while scrolling. Add this to the "Daniel asking silly things" bucket.
