  1. Hello In AD 1.3x I would export a file as .pdf and get a file size of approx 180 KB. Now in 1.4 exporting the same files gets me a file with a size of 1.3 MB. Any chance someone could share their thoughts on why the files are now so big? I also notice that in AD 1.4 there are new .pdf export options that were not there in 1.3x. Exporting for print seems to be the logical choice but now with a massive increase in size. I am not sure what has changed. If it helps, the end use of the files I am creating are for a sign maker to print onto vinyl. They are labels with a finished size of approx 30mm x 80mm. Cheers
  2. Ahh. Thank you, Kind of like Components in Sketchup ( if you know that software). Cheers.
  3. Just read this thread because it was at the top of the index. What are these "symbols" you are all talking about? Serious question. I am new to graphics design so have little knowledge. Cheers
  4. Couple of things that I found myself wanting to do with the Media Browser... 1. I wanted to be able to see (at the very least) my other AD documents so I could place them into a project as an embedded doc. Currently it looks like the Media Browser only sees images like .jpeg and .png. 2. I would love to be able to dock the media browser for easier asset access. Cheers
  5. Embedded Documents seem to be the way to go. "Embedding documents allows you to place any Affinity (Designer, Photo, etc.), Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, SVG, EPS or PDF document into your current document without the need to open each file in turn... Once you've added embedded documents onto your page, you can edit each document without leaving your current document." So by creating and saving each of my assets as separate AD files and placed in a Finder folder with an appropriate name, I can use Finder to view the collection and place into a new document. So easy! Cheers
  6. One option I experimented with is creating and saving some graphical elements as separate AD files. I then dragged them into a new project from the finder window. This created a series of embedded documents. This raises a few questions... 1. What is an embedded document? Is it an AD file within an AD file? Kind of a copy of the original file that is editable? 2. By double clicking the embedded document I opened a separate window where I could edit the element, change colours, move things around etc, and all layers are accessible. When I make changes to the element, save the parent document, I notice that the original file is left untouched. It is like the embedded document is a new file within the project? Is there a way to save the changes made to an embedded document as a new AD file? Thank you.
  7. I have been using AD to design labels and now posters for quite a big product range. There are graphical features that appear on each of these labels as a part of the branding. Currently I have been opening a completed file, copying the elements I need and pasting them into the new project file. Is this the only way of getting these elements into a new file? Is there a way of saving these graphical elements as a file I can drag into each new project? Perhaps keep them organised in a library type folder? This is probably a workflow type of question, but I am still green with how to use AD efficiently. Thanks for your help.
  8. I would just like to second this as a feature request. Even though I work alone, I am struggling to find a tidy but simple way to keep track of ideas, comments and changes to the projects I am working on. It would be great to be able to have a file specific note taking feature in this app. If possible it would include General note taking A To Do list feature which kept a dated log when you completed a task A place to make notes about the client and the project etc the ability to email a project snap shot with notes/annotations from within this feature. Just curious, how do folks here currently manage their project notes, ideas, client interactions, project histories etc? At the moment I am thinking of downloading an app like Things from the Mac App store as a way of managing my projects? Anyone have any suggestions for other Apps or approaches to design task management? Cheers
  9. Thank you for the thorough response. I was able to find exactly what I was looking for. Cheers.
  10. Hello. Where do designers go online to get their fonts, either paid or free? Do you have preferred sites or vendors? Cheers
  11. +1. Right now I am looking for tips on how to make white... white. I have RAW images (taken with a Canon camera) of a small item on a piece of white card. When I open them in AP the background is heavily tinted blue. There must be a strategy for optimising whites and blacks in images before moving on to other tweaks. I am struggling to find any info regarding this topic. Cheers
  12. Thanks for the info and tips. Probably waaaaay down on the list of dev work... but intuitively I wanted to copy and paste the details from the Guides Manager in one document to another. The other thing I wanted to do was resize the window or dock it somewhere convenient. If I had a second monitor then dragging it off the main screen would be nice. I do like how the Guides Manager stays open when switching between documents. I have 12 of these composite images to produce, so have created a custom grid to overlay as a layer in each document. Cheers
  13. Hello I am working on a series of product images. These images will be displayed side by side in a web shop. The finished images are simple composites made up of two separate images. I want to make each of the finished images have the same proportion and product positions. I am using guides to do this. Rather than go through the process of setting up guides for each of the different product documents, is there a way I can copy and paste guides from one document to another? Cheers
  14. Thank you Madame. I will take a look. I know nothing about customising brushes  Cheers
  15. Hi Callum. Many thanks for your reply. It is good to know that I can adjust the angle of the gradient, but it will not provide the solution I am after. As I am new to this type of software I am probably not looking at the problem the right way. There are probably many ways to do this job, but I want to have multiple colour changes along the length of the line and have the gradient changes be normal to the localised part of the path/stroke. It appears that even though I can create a multi coloured gradient and change its orientation, the angle is uniform across the curve. I do not seem to be able to find a way to adjust the linear nature of the gradient. Hopefully the screenshots below help shed some light. Perhaps applying a fill to a stroke like this is barking up the wrong tree. Cheers
  16. Hello. Can the angle of a linear gradient be changed? I have a curved line/stroke which I have applied a gradient to. The angle at which the gradient changes from one colour to another is vertical (0 deg). Can I change this angle to make it lean one way or another, perhaps by degrees? Many Thanks
  17. Hello folks! In Affinity Designer, can I reset the Zero co-ordinates or X-Y origin for the rulers and grid? I have had a look in the manual in the section called Drawing Aids but can't find any reference to resetting the X -Y origin. Many Thanks.
  18. Thanks A_B_C. I cannot recall my exact steps, but as I have been creating file variations using the save as function, I have been reorganising the folders in which I keep them as well. So your experience might be what I have encountered. All the best.
  19. Thank you Callum. I am a bit confused though because each time I do a 'Save As' task I always change the file name to reflect the new design (I am creating new files as variations of the same design in place of art boards). No worries though. From now on I will use the Duplicate feature in Finder to create the variant AD file up front before opening in AD for alteration. Cheers
  20. Possibly a rookie move on my part, but I have noticed on a couple of occasions that if I open a file I have been working on, choose the 'Save As' option in the file menu, the newly created file overwrites the original one, rather than duplicating it. Am I doing something wrong? Cheers
