Yeah, thanks, this is the truth, Hokusai.

Everything has its market. And the market for an app that combines all Illustrator capabilities and all InDesign capabilities is very small because there are not many great (vector) illustrators that are great in layout. This is the only reason (in my opinion). InDesign has many Illustrator capabilities, but not all. Adobe could combine them completely but the market is not seen.

    @Julian23:
Of course, layout programs can “hold the content”, e.g. InDesign can embed psds, eps, jpgs, etc. But it makes sense in many cases to store the link.

    Oval,

I would guess that the reason for this is because if they did, the program would be "a Jack of all trades and master of none". The program would be mediocre at many things but not good at anything. For me, I'd rather not have a program like that. A layout program and vector program have different focuses and as well different tool sets. So it is natural to separate them. Think of a hammer. A hammer is for hammering nails but you could use it for other things like opening glass bottles or as a paperweight (there are probably plenty of other uses as well) but those things are not what a hammer was designed for. Can you use it for other purposes? Yes you can but you would be better off using a tool that was specifically designed for that purpose. The same is true in this case. I know lots of people who use Illustrator (and before Freehand) to do page layout. Sure it works but it isn't the right tool for the job and in the end it doesn't work as well as if they had used a proper layout program. It will do in a pinch but it isn't the right tool for the job and using the right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. Think of those multi-tool things that they sell that have different screw drivers and some other different tools all combined. Do they work? Yes, they do but they aren't nearly as a regular (singularly focused) tool. They are designed for the average joe, not the professional. Most professionals wouldn't use them because they don't work as well. Of course there is going to be some crossover tools but in general specialization is better.

There's no way of accessing auto-saved files. They aren't even normal documents; they only contain incremental changes, for speed. They are only supposed to help recover from power failures and other catastrophic events. (We're going to stop calling them "auto-save" to be clearer about that.)

    cekuhnen,

I believe that distortion/warp tools are on the Road Map https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/842-affinity-designer-feature-roadmap/. Many people have requested an eraser tool so I would imagine that the Affinity team is aware of it (but I didn't see it on the road map but not everything is on the road map). In addition to Affinity Designer, I also have iDraw and I much prefer Designer to iDraw but iDraw's eraser tool is pretty cool. It doesn't do anything special, it does exactly what you would expect it to and it does it well. I hope that Designer will get a similar (or better) eraser tool in the future!

I'm very excited for Affinity Photo to become an "industry standard" digital painting tool, but there are a few things it needs first:

    - Color picker HUD (fly-out palette accessible while working on the canvas)

    - Customizable hot-key commands

    - Live rotate tool

    - Canvas flipping hot-keys.

If those four things can be added to the software as it is now, there is no reason for digital painters to keep their exorbitant loyalty to Adobe. I for one am eager to get off the bank-busting CC subscription, and I know that Affinity is the imminent promised land once the aforementioned needs of digital painters are featured in Affinity Photo. Please feel free to add more items my fellow digital painters in this thread. I hope the Affinity staff takes note!

    Hi jarombra,

We do have the Apple Colour Picker (View > Apple Colour Picker), if you select a colour it will update our colour panel. Might be a nice feature to have our own version, I would post this as a suggestion in our Feature Request section.

    Thanks

    Hi Arundel22,

Most of the Photoshop filters now are actions so it is not possible to import them into Affinity. However there have been a few posts asking for this filter before so it may be something we add in the future. I hope this helps :)

LilleG reacted to laneallen in Anchor point handles always get in way
Hi MattP, yes, something like that would work I think. Just keep in mind that zoom removes context of what people are working on. Also, by removing handles on multiple selections could also notify people that multiple selections are made, meaning, two (or more) overlapping points. One possibility of strengthening this visually would be highlighting multiple selection points with a different color, say purple, then showing a fade on actual vector lines. Then on single selections, visually highlight it with (something like) green. You could even show the influence on a line, although I don't know how difficult that would be to program in, just a thought.

Or allowing a toggle or key short to hide handles and edges would help when adding blurs, shadows or any kind of effect where you need to see what you're doing without edges and/or nodes getting in the way. I hope something like this will eventually make it into afd.

We deliberately try to hit off-curve handles first, otherwise there's no way to hit them at all if they're near to an on-curve handle, so this is the root cause of your problem :(  I can definitely understand your frustration though - as I've been there myself... I think there's some mileage in your suggestion to not show off-curve handles when you have a multi-selection of nodes, but maybe we could just generally be smarter and not show off-curve handles that would overlap the on-curve nodes - this way you'll be able to zoom in until they no longer occlude each other and then get access to their handles if you wanted? It also means that if you didn't have overlapping handles that you'd be able to drag then around even with a multi-selection of nodes. I think that might be okay?

    Thanks again,
    Matt

LilleG reacted to laneallen in Option to remove selection bounding transformation box
As a long time vector graphics user, the one main issue I have with Designer is the selection/bounding/transformation box. For me, it is the most obtrusive aspect of Designer, and causes the most frustrations. When trying to make multiple selections, the bounding box makes it extremely difficult to select surrounding objects up to almost 1-2 pixels. The bounding box also becomes extremely difficult when dealing with text; try double clicking text at anything at, or below, a 24pt font and you'll start to understand the issues.

When working on designs, I want to see the design as much as possible with less obstructions, especially when tweaking.

I want to hide that bounding box altogether and focus on the design of whatever I'm doing. This is a simplified example, but which do you feel allows you to focus on the design rather than the UI? Please allow us to just show the outline of selections then hotkey Option (or something easy) for rotation and Alt for scale. This would solve a lot of issues of selecting other objects nearby without the problems of getting transformation queues from the bounding box.

This is the one feature, above anything else, that would make Designer hands down the most enjoyable for me.

LilleG reacted to jackamus in Moving curve nodes
I understand that but in my case sometimes the handle may be right on top of the node and If I want to move the node and click on it  then it is the handle that get selected rather than the node. This tends to happen when a straight line is involved.

Using the curser keys, as MEB suggested, is OK if you want to move a group of selected nodes horizontally or vertically but to move them at an angle requires twice as much key-tapping. It would be so much easier to just drag them.

Are we still reading from the same hymn-sheet?

I often need to move two or more curve nodes at the same time. What often happens is the nodes may have their adjustment handles coincident with the node so when you want to move it the pointer picks up the handle rather than the node and instead of moving the node you transform the shape.

My suggestion is that AD recognizes more than two nodes being selected and makes their handles inactive. I can't conceive of a situation where you would want to adjust a handle whilst having selected two or more nodes. Am I making sense?

LilleG got a reaction from anon1 in Collapsible Panels
Having to scroll through selections and options because there is not enough room in the open panel to show them all is a right royal pain.  It would be extremely handy if there was an option to collapse each panel to a single label row then have one (or more) expand when selected.  There are a number of panels that I don't use that often but take up room that squeezes panels I'd like to see all of.  I could turn those off but turning panels on and off is also a pain when you have to go to View>Studio>panel each time you open or close one.  There are other panels that I would like to see all of without scrolling when selected. Swatches, for example, and Brushes. Layers and Adjustments.  I don't need those all open at the same time; I do need to see all of them when they are open.

My apologies.  My thinking cap wasn't on yesterday!

I get it now.  Works just like Photoshop's Polygonal Lasso Tool except for these two things:

    1. AP requires you to press the Shift key and keep it held down during your selection (okay, you don't have to hold it down all the time, but are you really going to press and unpress it just prior to each click?  No!), which may not be desirable in cases where you are spending a long time making an intricate selection.

    2. AP auto draws the closing segment of the selection as you are making your selection.  I find that interesting.  Not sure if it is desirable or undesirable.  But I will say that (1) is more of an issue than (2).

Maybe an easy fix would be to allow CapsLock to eliminate the need to hold down the Shift key.  The goal here is to allow the selection to be made without the need for constant pressing of a key or the mouse button.

Another suggestion, not a very important one: Under OS X, most document-based applications support right-clicking the titlebar, which would open a menu with the parent folders of the document. I use this quite often in other applications to open the containing folder. It would be nice if AD and AP supported this, and it would be more OS X-conformant, too!

    Cheers
