    Something like this?

I wish I could take credit for this idea but it is something ronnyb posted back in January of 2015.

gdenby got a reaction from AncientWire in How do I add an outline around the whole design?
I'm assuming the art is all vector work. If so, it is easy. Select all, and make a copy. Group the originals, and lock them. Paste the copies in, and while they ar highlighted, use the boolean add. Change the fill to none, and change the stroke to a white line of whatever size you might need, and have the stroke set to "align stroke to outside" in the stroke dialogue.

I have Pixelmator, but have used it maybe once since I got Designer. Just an estimate, but I think Designer has at least twice as many features, probably more. I find Designer interface to be easier to use. For layout, Designer's vector tools are more versatile. There are wide variety of user customizable grids, many built in variable shapes, and extensive snapping options make forming and arranging objects really easy.  More to learn, but most of it is easy to pick up. And tho' it is not a dedicated paint program, it is quite good.

Just so you know, your plans are threatening to become a big, budget busting problem for me -- not because of your very affordable iPad app prices, but because I don't have an iPad that meets the hardware requirements. So it is becoming very difficult to avoid the temptation to go nuts & buy a new 12" iPad Pro & Apple Pencil!

For an old retired guy no longer earning a paycheck, this would mean cutting back on some of the necessities of life, like beer & wine, causing me great hardship.

I hope you can live with that on your conscience.

As Callum demonstrated, much the same in Affinity Photo as in Photoshop. Designer does not have an average blur, only a gaussian blur which does not give the same effect.

Reading back over your previous posts, it seems you have a blue rectangle over the whole of the parchment. I suspect you need to manually draw the continents as a vector, if you haven't already. Copy them. While held in memory, subtract the continent vectors from the blue ocean rectangle. Then paste the continent vectors back into the cutout space. Give the whatever hue you like.

I too am impressed. A fine sense of design, well executed w. the tool set. Some subtle work in there. For instance, the slight curve to the petals of the white flowers.

    Here's is a method.

Use the pen tool, and in line mode, draw a horizontal line. Give the stroke some thickness, and then use the pressure setting control to taper on end. Use the transparency tool to fade the stroke away in the direction of the taper.

Duplicate the line, move the duplicate straight down, and repeat the duplication as much as you want. Its called power duplication. The result will quickly be a vertical series of evenly spaced lines. These can then be moved together to near the coast line. W. shift held down for constraint, shift each to the coastline.

Will be tedious. Many are waiting for a "blend" tool which will replicate an object along a path. At present, there are some cases where symbol fonts can be used to conform to a text path. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to get that to work in this situation.

Hmmm. You could take the pen tool and draw a single straight line and then give it a textured line style. Then you can option drag it down to make a second line and maybe give it a slightly different textured line or use the Reverse Curve action command to make the textured line style move in the opposite direction. You could set up say 5 lines that are spaced apart how you want with slightly different textured lines and then select those 5 lines and option drag them down and then power duplicate them until they fill up the page.

Then group all of the line together and rasterize it. Then you could go to the Pixel Persona and use the Erase Brush tool to modify the lines to where they are along the coast. You could even use the other tools, like Blur, Sharpen etc, to fine tune it further. That is how I would do it.

Yes, it can be hard to find spare time. 24 days, w. maybe an hour a day should give a good idea of what the program can do. There's quite a bit already in AD, and given that the purchase guarantees all the version additions to v. 2, new features will be available for an investment of probably less than .10/day. Hard to beat that.

Any stroke in AD can have a brush replace the plain line. With the ellipse selected, look at the upper left hand of the tool context bar at the top of the work area. Click on the stroke dialogue button. Click on the little brush icon on the right, the textured brush option. Or go over to the right of the screen where there are buttons labeled color, swatches, stroke, and brushes, and do the same thing there w. the stroke dialogue. Then click nest to it to get access to the available brushes. There are 7 included image brushes as samples. One can make ones own brushes, and there are a number of users who have donated or sell brushes they have made.

If you have Photo, the is a file menu that will open the vector work for editing in Photo. However, Designer has quite a few operations in common w. Photo, and you may be able to do what you need in Designer alone.

1 of the reasons I bought Designer was its fine selection of bitmap painting and manipulation tools.

Hi my name is Gareth and I am a motion graphic designer.

Just got Affinity Photo as my replacement for Photoshop and loving it so far.

I come from the Amiga days of design and animation, so I love to see new thinking and inventiveness in my tools.

So small, question, when are we getting a replacement for After Effects Affinity team?

gdenby reacted to R C-R in Vector graphics - 8/16bit?
I might be misunderstanding what you are asking, but vector graphics are resolution independent. Unlike raster (bitmapped) images, they are stored as a series of instructions that are used to render (draw) the object at the current pixel resolution, whatever that might be. If you export an Affinity document to a format like JPEG or TIFF that only supports raster images, vector objects will be converted to pixels at whatever pixel resolution you set for the document.

This web page is one of many that discusses the differences between various vector & raster image file formats.

Bit depth determines the color resolution of the image.

    Hi, Licorne,

At present, Affinity Designer doesn't have the function. It requires auto tracing, which is planned by v 2.0 according to the road map.

Depending on what you are trying to do, using various pixel selection tools, and then using the refine edge command will allow output of separate layers, or masks fro the selection. Those can then be used for fx, adjustments and blends. But the shape will remain a fixed proportion.
