Exchanging files between Windows beta and Mac version?

I sent an Affinity file to a subcontractor who is on Windows and asked him to download the Windows beta of Affinity Designer and make changes to the file for me. He did so and sent the file back, but when I try to open it I get this message:
"The file version is not supported by this version of Affinity."
I'm not sure what might be the problem, any recommendations? Really at this point the problem is that our source file is Affinity, and we need to be able to exchange the/a file with changes made.
