It's fantastic that Affinity regularly updates Designer, Photo and Publisher. And even more fantastic that the updates are free for existing user. Kudos for that.
But, and there is a but, I would gladly pay for premium updates and requested features if that would lead to more developers where being hired to work on the software. One of the most requested features since 2015, DXF/DWG filesupport, is sadly again not a part of the current update. And my only guess is a lack of manpower. This feature would open up Designer to a massive market of makers/physical designers (and a range of machines like laser cutters, folio cutters and CNC routers)  and would probably pay for itself in increased sales in a very short time. There is only a very few programs with DXF/DWG support on the mac and they all cost 10 times what Designer cost.
Lastly I'm perpetually stunned by that lack of communication on this subject. It feels like every time someone writes about it in this forum they are getting stonewalled by moderators or affinity itself. What is that about?

    Hi there!
This topic is a word of encouragement and gratitud. Since last year, I had a list somewhere around the forums, of things that people wanted to see in the Affinity Suite. After this launch, and considering some features that came in 1.7, I wanted the thank the whole team for the following (Blue is for things launched in 1.7, Green is for 1.8, and now, red is for 1.9, purple is for 2.x)
    Designer
Bleed area guides (now with the possibility to choose a color for it) Mesh Fill tool Mesh Warp/Distort tool Knife tool Scissors tool Calligraphic line styles Arrowhead line style Export slices with previews Export preview (not in Export Persona) Pages (like the ones in Fireworks) (Almost what we expected, but you never know if the allow to create more Pages directly in Designer) Multiple Effects/Fills/Strokes per shape (Not available for text, but it will come later) Replicate/Blend Convert Bitmaps to vectors (Auto tracing) Select same Color/Fill/Attribute (with some suggestion made by me, that I hope they can include them) Blob tool Spiral tool Width tool Paint Bucket tool Vector Eraser tool Vector Crop tool to do actual vector cropping (can be done with the Shape Builder Tool) Shape Builder tool Text Hinting support Prototyping capabilities Vector patterns Fixing the convert to curves problems at small sizes (improved to a great degree. Still needs improving in tiny cases) Fixing problems with Boolean operations "Universal Layers" using Artboards Contour Tool (hope it gets additional functionality in a future update) DXF/DWG Import DXF/DWG Export Photo
IPTC Support Smart Objects support (import only, and of course, not all possible Smart Objects) Better digital painting brushes (the double thing has proven to be very good) Tool Presets Crop to pixel selection Text on a path Publisher
IDML Import support IDML Export Data merge Global Layers / Layer tags ePub Export Color separation Footnotes / Endnotes Running Headers DXF/DWG Import All Apps
Saving custom workspaces DAM Application WebP Import/Export ICO Export BMP Export WMF Export in Mac TGA with alpha Channel Export CDR Import/Export PSD Export with editable text AI Import/Export Right-To-Left languages support Scripting/Extensibility User made Templates MS Windows Hardware acceleration Hope to change the color of more items from the above listing soon!
2020-sep-19. Edited to add 1.9 new features.
    Best regards!

My company is looking at purchasing a new photo/vector suite for all our locations, and Affinity is a major contender, largely due to their pricing structure (buy to own, not "subscribe") and their modern, easy to learn UI. However, there's two points holding us back:
DXF import/export is absolutely mandatory. We often convert sketches or images to lineart, and convert it to DXF for running CNC machines. An absolute must have feature in this industry. No AI exporting ability. On rare occasions, we need to modify and AI file provided by a customer, and send it back to them for verification. Not having this ability would be a nuisance, but workable. I understand that Adobe owns the rights to that file format, and thusly, Serif would be intruding on patent rights to include such capability in their software. However, I feel that if Designer supported export plugins, the community is big enough that there would be 3rd party solutions to this problem, that Serif would not be responsible to.

@Mark Ingram ok thanks for that information, but could you please tell me if ArionFx will be working in 32bit in Photo? - or its too difficult? - or does it need changes on plugin side?
i am in contact with Chema Guerra (CEO and Lead Engineer at RandomControl), in case its necessary i, or you could get in touch with him to ask for changes?
i really hope at some point ArionFX will work
    thanks in advance

Is there a timeline for including this feature into Designer? It is difficult to replace Adobe Illustrator workflows without this option. SVG just isn't the same.

Come on Affinity. Moment of truth. AD is a vector software. DXF / DWG is the most used, recognized, and shared vector file format across the globe. No excuses at this point. I work on CAD at work and Affinity at home (only because I can't afford an AutoCAD license for home use). I'm about to jump ship, although you probably don't care now that you've gotten my money. It's been "considered" for years. At least tell us why it hasn't been implemented.

You have been "considering this" since the first requests from users began back in 2015, maybe even earlier. Its been an export option in Illustrator and CorelDraw for ages, even Inkscape does it. I would just like Affinity to come clean about it. Is it even on the roadmap? Do they acknowledge that any modern vector application should be able to export to the most broadly adopted file format across digital production machines? Why has something that seems simple, an export option, taken so long to implement? Is it a royalty issue?
I just want some answers since I've been awaiting this since I first bought Designer back in 2015.

Just wanted to import DXF from SolidWorks... Wow! I can not believe this isn't supported.
SolidWorks can export ai files, but in Designer circles are not circles any more. Just clouds of dots, connected with straight lines. Not usable!

I would love DXF import support also. I am mainly using it to import files from fusion and laser cut, currently I still need to use Inkscape as part of the flow to convert DXF to SVG then import with Designer.

First, Affinity Designer is beautiful and extremely efficient tool. I like it!

I am doing design and artwork for front panels / operating panels of electric devices and machines. The drawings are available in DXF and / or DWG from Autocad (trademark). What would really speed up my workflow is the option to *import* DXF or DWG files.

Considering that these files can carry very complex information it would be sufficient to be able import only a single layer file or a single layer of such a file. This contains all mechanical data so I can be sure that the artwork will match the target device.

    Adobe Illustrator has this feature.

Export of DXF / DWG files is actually not required for this kind of work.

@firstdefencesorry but i am not interested in any kind of speculation on your side, like said some words of a Dev could maybe give some insight and facts

regarding app compatibility i think you mix Arion Render (which was discontinued btw) and ArionFx, and those link you posted says:
"The charts below will help you choose the right GPU for Arion and the Arion plug-ins:"
btw Arion runs on CPU and GPU...

what i really dont get is if i ask a question to Serif Officials and Devs, and somebody answeres who has no answers!
nothing personal but i'll ignore further stuff from you - as you seem to talk much about stuff you have limited knowledge, please dont waste my time.

ReinhardK reacted to Sugar Lion in How to Use ColorChecker Passport in Affinity Photo
    Hi all
This has been the week of figuring out how to get my colours sorted in Affinity Photo. There is no direct support for the ColorChecker Passport from X-Rite in Affinity Photo unfortunately but I did figure out how to do it with some help. If you use X-Right ColorChecker Passport these are the steps on how to do it. This might be painfully obvious to some people but for me it was all entirely new and took a while to get my head around so I hope that this is some use to people.
    1. When you are shooting your photos in a location take a photo of the ColorChecker Passports colour cards and the white card. Make sure they are in the same place as your subject matter and are properly exposed.
    2. Import all the photos from your session along with your pictures of the ColorChecker.
    3. Open your photos of the ColorChecker in Affinity Photo crop them down if you like and export them as 16 bit Tiff files. 8 bit might work but I have been going with 16
    4. Open ColorChecker Tiff photos with the new beta version of ColorChecker Passport  Camera Calibration software in the ICC tab.
    5. Export your ICC profiles naming them something so you know what photo shoot they go along with.
    6. Close down Affinity Photo and then re-open it to refresh the ICC database
    7. Open your photos from the associated photo shoot and go to the Document tab and select Assign ICC Profile and select the ICC file you just created. And if all goes well your colour is mostly corrected.
    8. Now to set the white balances correctly. Go to White Balance in the Adjustment section. Click the Picker button and then click on the photo that you took during the photo shoot of your white card. This will then automatically make the adjustment.

I hope that helps some folks. I did not understand any of this stuff three days ago and it was no fun trying to get my head around it for the first time. If anyone has tips on how to improve upon this workflow please share. I am by no means an expert on this subject.
    All the best!

I'm not an insider; just a user like you. But I certainly assume that vector based "brushes" (i.e., ability to stretch, repeat, or blend vector objects along paths) are planned.
However, I would just as strongly think it unrealistic to expect a reverse-engineering of Adobe Illustrator's specific treatments of "brushes".  So I'd expect any ability to directly import Illustrators' brushes as still-live constructs to be just as unlikely for Affinity as it is for any other competitive drawing program. Corel Draw, Canvas, etc., can't directly import Illustrator brushes, either, just as Illustrator can't directly import working copies of proprietary constructs in those programs and just as Illustrator can't directly import Affinity's raster-based brushes.
Nor would I even want that. Illustrator's vector-based brushes are one of its few truly differentiating features, and I even dare say I use them more elaborately than most users do. But that doesn't mean it can't be done better. Illustrator's Art, Scatter, and Pattern Brushes are full of unnecessary limitations and they are too "standalone" in nature; "ignorant" of other Illustrator functionality that should be integrated with them.
Think about it: Such a feature ties in with a lot of other more foundational functionality (path strokes, fills, ends, Symbols, envelope distortion…). Affinity is still only approaching version 2, and its functional foundation (like transformations) is still very much under development. To build something better than standard fare, you don't put the cart before the horse, just to be able to claim "me, too."

ReinhardK reacted to Sun in „Video Frames to Layers“ = image sequence from a video - pleeease :)
Please add the feature to import a VIDEO file to get single frames of that video as images  on separate layers.

    = „Video Frames to Layers“

    in Photoshop:

    „Video Frames to Layers“

    File-> Import -> „Video Frames to Layers“

The Option „Limit to every _ n_ Frames“ is essential to have  in this feature.

This feature maybe was not sooo important for a long time, but now it has become a very interesting feature, esp. for web designers, as one can „fake“ a video-scroll effect with such an image sequence, without having the disadvantages of video on (mobile) websites.

I hope, you get what I’m trying to describe here?  ;)

It would be very, very helpful just to KNOW,  if  you are planning to implement this feature.

Thank you very much in advance!

And thank you SO much for all the great work you do!

I wish you best of luck with just everything!!!  :)

    P.S.:

Here you can find a video (next to „Widget Highlights“) that will explain, why this feature would be so extremely nice to have…   :)
