Inkscape is an open source project with a built in image trace tool. The code could be repurposed for this application. It's licensed under the GPL v.2 https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape
I'm sure someone else might have suggested this, but I hope my post helps to vote for this feature to move from the backlog and into development. It's surprising to find this post has been here for over 6 years.

Thank you for your professional insight.
Tbh, the only reason I was trying to replace Illustrator with Designer is because Illustrator is so glitchy.  It constantly locks up or kicks you out.
If Designer would fix the brush tool, and add trace, it would be the perfect program. I like the work flow much better than Illustrator.  If Illustrator had their workflow, it would be the perfect program. I've been using Photoshop for years, and fell right into Affinity without much of a learning curve. I use all three of their programs and love them, but unfortunately, it has not replaced Illustrator.
Oh well... wishful thinking. Maybe if we shout it from the roof tops, Serif will fix it. Even without trace, that is sometimes useless, there's no reason why they can't allow a brush to be made without rasterizing it, or implementing symbols somehow. I mean, come on... you have to create a png from a vector stroke to create the brush? It make no sense. Maybe they need to hire better people if they can't figure it out.

Yes, you're reading it right. It's great for a lot of stuff,  but not so much for others.  It's a shame that haven't addressed this

Affinity Designer brushes are a raster image on a vector curve, so not pure vector but a hybrid vector/raster brush. So you cannot expand the brush and get a vector texture from the brush. I would assume all brushes are this way free, paid and pre-installed.
As to why Affinity chose to use a hybrid brush, who knows but to my mind it seems a backward step. Hopefully we will get pure vector brushes in the near future.

I'm really hoping Affinity updates to allow true 100% vector brushes to be more editable and relevant in future releases. What are currently labeled "vector brushes" are not 100% vector and cannot be expanded as vectors. They have their uses and I appreciate them - but in my line of work, I need to be able to export 100% vector - no raster in the final output.
Right now we can only modify the 100% vector brush to a simple taper on each end - As I have attached to this post, there are many other types of tapers and such I'd love to be able to do with a 100% vector brush.
Going a little further - I'm hoping for a blob-tool that can allow for any shape to be made and used -

+1 for X-Rite ColorChecker profiles to work in Affinity Photo. I no longer develop RAW without calibrated colours. If I can develop RAW in Affinity I can escape the clutches of the 'Creative Cloud'.

Raw processing from Affinity is way off.. Doesn't work and X-rite color checker is not supported.
I don't use Affinity for Raw import. Start at Nikon NX-D (Freeware) or DxO (payed) to ensure you get the correct colors.
My question is already open for more tan 1,5?-2? years. I gave them even the source Nef so they can test it. Bit no.... nothing so far.
I suggest to start working with tiff flows, those work correct.

    hi
I bought an X rite profiler and got Affinity at the same time... BUT still you cannot use it with the software that was offered with the profiler...come on Serif, this is a very common piece of kit used by thousands...

They are shooting themselves in the foot, and their clients to. They would sell more copies and have more satisfied customers. They could access a huge market (architects, designers, manufacturers).
Noone asks for Designer to be a CAD software. But only to be able to import CAD data.

Today I had to do what I hoped not to do.. start the subscription of Adobe Illustrator again.. only because need the DXF import and export.

I have tried some other options as Inkscape and others, but they really suck.. in my opinion.

hope this DXF feature will be here soon!

I'd also like to request DWG/DXF support as there are designers who work in commercial printing, engineering, construction, planning, environment (and more) who needs CAD compability to make Affinity Designer a desirable alternative. The feature would support LOTS of jobs.

We need to keep this topic live, so here is my two cents   I have recently bought complete Affinity software with the intention to stop my Adobe CC subscription. So far, so good. But as other people above I often work with CNC cutter. My is Silhoulete plotter and the software only supports DXF import.
I think I can survive with online converters, but direct support in Affinity bundle would really be welcome. I recently convinced whole pre-press studio to take a look at the bundle. They have old Adobe CS suite and they consider shifting to Affinity too. Also, DXF support for daily use is a mandatory there. By the way, you really make a good impression by Furrier Transform filtr in Photo, they often scan old newspaper images and this feature is lifesaver for them...

So, please! Add DXF support ❤️

I'm an architect looking for an alternative for Adobe CC and I love the ambition of the Affinity suite of design software and the predictable, one-time purchase price model. Importing DXF files (and being able to select curves based on properties such as colour, linewheight, fill colour, etc) are the features that keeps me attached to Adobe.
Hope to see support for DXF in the near future! Keep up the good work! ❤️

Affinity, is there any progress wrt color checker passport?
Can we still expect this or is it dropped from the backlog list?

Also, can you tell us were it is on the list wrt a roadmap when we might expect it?

Come on guys.  Why does this seem to continue to fall on deaf ears?
Most of the work I do involves designing control panels as well as their associated membrane or silkscreen overlays.
When I purchased Affinity Designer late last year through the app store, I mistakenly assumed that would import and export DXF files as this file format is required to transfer in and out nearly all industrial design tools, including the ones I use like Altium Designer and SolidWorks.
Optimistically, with all of the recent fanfare and positive industry accolades received for Photo and Designer during the couple of years, I felt certain that the development team would certainly see the light and appreciate how critical the need is for such an industry standard file format to be implemented, and that DXF file import and export would surely be added into 1.8.  And certainly with its recent successes Affinity would assuredly be able to budget the expense to pay some poor starving coder to get down to brass tacks and get this figured out.  My jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw that it still had not.
I agree that Affinity really should provide a response on something that just seems to be so basic and such an unbelievable glaring omission - and for five years of ongoing requests. The lack of DXF import and export sadly has made this purchase unusable for me so far, and I would really like to see that change.

This is a feature I would really like and cannot believe its not in at least the Designer program, I decided to get a copy of DrawPlus x8 so that I can convert Bitmap to Vector and WOW this program does this incredibly and in my thinking this is that same company that makes Affinity Programs so why could that not use this code in the Affinity range of programs they have missed a key feature in my option.
Please consider implementing this into Affinity ASAP looks like there are quite a few people wanting this, I have only signed up on the forum to post this so that show how much I want and there must be other people that just put up with the work round method.....

totally agree, first of all i want to do anything possible in one software other thing is maybe your customers are not that happy if you upload their files anywhere.
hopefully this will be adressed in the next release and we dont have to wait another years for DXF/DWG import export
and dont get me wrong i totally like the intuitivity of your products, but at some point i am loosing faith in your speed and direction of develepment and how you handle your customers needs.

as i have allready postet on twitter i would like to see a kind of uservoice site to better see you customers wishes and needs and make everything more transparent like on substance feedback/uservoice site

anyways thanks for your hard work
