Good day everyone, I'm Allen, from Manila, Philippines. I'm a Sr. Art Director / Sr. Graphic Designer by profession who has worked for various multi-national ad agencies in my country for 16+ years. I have been using Adobe Suite of Applications since it's inception but have been looking for an alternative that can ultimately replace my Adobe Suite. I couldn't much longer afford the subscription rates and Adobe hogs computer memory too, with that said, it was all but natural for me to switch to Affinity Designer.
Now I'm slowly grasping the ins and outs of Affinity Designer, thankfully it's a short learning curve for me, since I'm well versed in Illustrator already, the shortcut keys are pretty intuitive save for some that needs a little bit learning. So it's was really easy, painless switch for me when I bought a copy of Affinity Designer last month. I've already made a few magazine layout designs which I have attached below as proof of my learnings.

Looking forward to meet more of you guys here.
Since I already have Affinity Designer, I Will buy the Affinity Photo, the next month after payday.
By the end of the year, I will have the Whole Affinity Suite so that I can use the Affinity Studio Link feature. Yes!!!
Disclaimer: The Magazine Mockup was made in Adobe Photoshop, since I don't own Affinity Photo yet.
By the way, you can also follow me on instagram as AffinityDesigner_Art. It's an instagram account dedicated to my journey to discovering the wonders of Affinity Designer. Here's the link: affinity.designer.art

I think this brush set needed a little extra work as it really has so much more potential for expansion

Experimented with using just stippling (a little bit of Pointillism!) to create a more subtle texture pattern effect and adjusted the brush dynamics (mostly flow and accumulation)

Hi all, my name is Chris from Auckland New Zealand. I've been in the industry for a long time - way before computers took over the design process.
After 20 years as a creative in Advertising, I got out and set up a small design business.
I've been using Adobe products since CS2 and bought CS6 as Adobe moved to the subscription business model.
I stuck with Windows 7 until recently - the end of support in January 2020 forced me to upgrade to Win 10.
I had been looking for an alternative to Adobe because an earlier attempt to run CS6 on Win 10 had been a disaster and cost me $500 for an IT guy to fix. I found Serif by chance on a youtube video and after a bit of research I bought Photo, Designer and Publisher - I'm hoping they will replace PSD, AI and INDD as these are the programs I use every day.
So far I've limited my training to Affinity Designer as I have a project that includes a lot of isometric illustrations. It's taking a bit of time to adjust and lose the urge to complete a task using AI methods but the more I learn, the more I like it.
Right now I'm just hungry for as many tutorials as I can find. Looking forward to incorporating the whole package into my workflow.

    Cheers all

Hello all.  I'm new to Affinity Photo and to the forum.  I'm a former LR user and occasionally dabbled in GIMP and PS Elements as well as tried a couple of other trial versions. So far I'm blown away by how well AP is working for me and I'm happy to find that the community seems very helpful.  Looking forward to exploring some new techniques.

    Cheers.

It is not hopeless unless you insist on doing everything in one app. If not, as has been mentioned many times in these discussions there are quite a few good alternatives, including several free ones, that can be used with Affinity Designer (& Photo) to provide that function.

As a newbie to Affinity Designer, I'm loving it. Below are my sample works which starts from basic to medium. I used Affinity Spotlight website to populate my magazine design mockup and another magazine design original. I sure do hope Affinity comes up with their companion magazine, because that would be cool!

    Hi Jan Gaare,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
We do have plans to add a tracing tool assuming we are able to get the output quality we are aiming for. Meanwhile there's quite a few utilities you can use (some of them quite good) to trace images. You can then open the result file in Affinity and work from there.

I have no direct experience with this, but some forum users have mentioned that Inkscape (which I believe uses Potrace as its auto-tracing engine) generally produces better results than Illustrator.

Personally, I have never found an app I can afford that provides an auto-trace function that outputs vectorized files formatted & layered in any way I would find very useful for my purposes. Usually, the raster image has either high enough pixel resolution to begin with that I can use it as is, or the resolution is too low to produce a version that looks good when vectorized & scaled up & added to my project, so I end up manually tracing it anyway.

    Hi chilly7,
No, there's no eta for the auto-trace functionality. It will be only released if/when the dev team is happy with its output/quality.

That is the case. I do not  want to lose time! I want to do many wonderful things!!! And time is a problem for me.

Adobe Illustrator is expansive for me so i am looking for alternative but with the best quality.
I do unprofitable work so i do not make money out of my work so that's is a problem for me to pay that much money out of Adobe subscription plan.

    Who is Serif?

Then you should not trust paid software like Affinity or many others either, because they include open source "backend" software code that is distributed under a variety of no-cost licenses. Inkscape is one of the many apps that uses the Potrace algorithm for auto-tracing -- if you would find that algorithm more worthy of your trust if you had to pay to use it, there are several paid apps that use it for that.

    Hey folks,

Been a wee while but I'm back at creating creatures with Affinity Designer (and paper & pencil). Instead of adding a new topic for every one I make, I thought I'd start this new thread to put them all in and show them off to you all.

So here's one for ya! :)
