I agree Art text should behave like this. In fact, in the current 1.6 betas it already does.

To 'merge' to pixel layers, you can group them, then rasterize them. Hope this helps!

Those functions are usually performed on a photo editing application like Affinity Photo.
In Affinity Designer Images are treated differently, as objects, this means you crop them at an object level, not at a document level.
The only way to get a crop similar to a photo editing app is to use the crop tool as usual and then rasterise the layer to get rid of the cropped area. You also have to manually resize the document to fit the new cropped image size.
 
Likewise there's currently no concept of "merge" in Affinity Designer. Maybe we can add this as a menu command when two pixel layers are selected. As a workaround you can group two pixel layers and then rasterise the group to get the same effect.
 
Linked layers aren't currently supported/implemented neither in Affinity Designer nor in Photo.

At the moment it looks like the magic wand selection tool doesn't generate partially selected pixels. This results in the horrible jagged / harsh edges as below when attempting to isolate an element.

 
Photoshop on the other hand supports anti-aliasing which gives a smooth transition from fully opaque to fully transparent.
 
This feature is an absolute must in my opinion, especially for quickly cutting out well defined objects in an image / removing the background.
 
Feathering or smoothing the jagged edges (another extra step that shouldn't be necessary) just doesn't give as good of an effect.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Embedded documents are embedded inside the afdesign/afphoto file and are independent from the original file. We will add linked documents later in a future update.
Currently there's no way to un-embeded them other than deleting the embedded layer. If you need the objects/elements inserted directly in the main document, double-click the embedded document on canvas - it will open in a new document tab - and copy/paste the objects/elements from the new document tab to the main document.

I'm not entirely sure the reasons for Affinity doing this, however I will pass it onto development as an improvement to allow users to change this in export options.

Situation:
I use artboards. On the art board is an "Export Slice (SVG)"
All exported SVG files contain a clipping path. An export without an art board with the same slice does not contain Clipping Path. Why? - The drawing objects contain no Clipping Path. See also the example files.

In fact, after a simple copy/paste, the way to resize object in AP works like smart object function in Photoshop BUT you don't have to pay attention to the update of the file. Some people could think it's a silly way to work but I've never made a mistake by having forget a update of an object ... I use my head instead of let the machine do. (^_^!)

And another detail : packshots are on another hard drive. They are archived on a bluray for my jewels library (+2500 objects), and catalogs of a year are archived on a "customer's bluray" ...

It is indeed OpenWithProgids.
The Designer install never previously registered itself for any non-native file types, so if it was ever in the Open with... list for those files, I suspect it's because you put it there (e.g. via Open with.... > Choose another app).

Just wanted to reiterate our intentions here: We are aware that users want arrowheads, so we are aiming to put them in as soon as we are able to. I'm very sorry if this deficiency is affecting your productivity and fully intend to get this addressed.

Wow! Affinity Designer looks very good from the git-go. It's fast, well organized and pleasant to use. The text handling has some excellent features already. Scrolling through the font menu and watching selected text change live, quite a treat. 
 
The main addition it needs for me to replace AI is arrowheads. I don't need a lot of useless style options such as Adobe offers, just filled triangles that have some adjustment options.
 
    •  placeable on beziers as well as straight lines
    •  auto scale to line thickness
    •  user adjustable scale acting on default size  (+% and -%, i.e.)
    •  user adjustable head angle (again, maybe relative to default)
 
And maybe, if not too much trouble:
    •  an option to have arrowhead extend line OR
           have the line shorten to place the arrow tip at the end of the original segment.

[edit] P.S. Another discussion of arrowheads suggests ability to round corners. Not strictly necessary for me but nice. Acts on all three corners, maybe adjustable as a proportion of the arrowhead's size.

Here's a way merge them: select all the pixel layers you want to merge, group them, then right-click on the group in the Layers panel and select Rasterise... from the contextual menu. They will me merged into a single pixel layer.

The cause of the bug is the 125% zoom. Anything other than an even 100% will cause this problem (e.g. 100%, 200%, etc are OK)

Add option to nudge by document units using the nudge distance and modifier values as increments relative to this.
 
E.g.
Initial set-up
Nudge distance: 0.1
Nudge units: Document units
Document units: Millimetres
 
Nudge distance = 0.1 mm
 
Change document units to pixels.
Nudge distance = 0.1 px
