How to check the ink coverage
MickRose replied to Giorgia's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
@Giorgia Just re-reading the printers comments, their 150% limited applies to text - presumably that is because of the thin lines in some fonts - particularly at small sizes. I'm not convinced you can make a dark green with that limit. Or a rich red or many other intense colours. Having said that I would say that using digital printers can be problematic with some spidery fonts because of the resolution of the machines. -
How to check the ink coverage
MickRose replied to Giorgia's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
I find it hard to believe that their maximum coverage is 150% though I don't know what machine they use for printing the wedding menus. On most paper/cards the maximum would be nearer 250 or 300. I wonder if you chose a stock that was very delicate and couldn't take much ink. Also, it is not good if some sheets were okay and others were not. -
To me, it's partly the existence of this forum which has engendered a sort of loyalty to Serif in it's attempt to make decent and cheap software in a market dominated by Adobe. Big companies have bought small companies since companies existed and I have no ill feeling towards Serif for allowing itself to be bought out. I can see why they think it's a good thing for them (not just the money) and only time will tell if it turns out to be a good thing or not for it's customers. Presumably at some point a super-duper subscription only version will come out and users will have to make their own minds up about that. Thanks for the ride.

Affinity Designer 2: PDF export has wrong dimensions
MickRose replied to FelixK's topic in V2 Bugs found on Windows
Hi @FelixKThe cropped page size (using Acrobat Pro) is 145.04 x 211.08. I am surprised version 1 was better than version 2. If you still have version 1 you could always export as PDF and then import into version 1. You could even try reducing the size of your AD file to 210.94 (or similar). -
Move data entry improvements
MickRose replied to Ash's topic in [ARCHIVE] 2.4, 2.3, 2.2 & 2.1 Features and Improvements
The Data Merge Layout Tool is worth looking at for Step & Repeat. A file is attached here. It's a bit clunky but maybe Serif could tweak the code a bit and have it as a separate Step & Repeat feature. I agree that the InDesign Step & Repeat command is very useful but the Affinity one has the potential to be much better - i.e. live rather than static. Data Merge Layout Tool.afpub -
Ability to combine multiple text frames.
MickRose replied to a topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
The problem with the linking text frames method is that you lose the look of the original content because all the spacing between the frames gets lost. A nicer way might be to export the selected text frames as a PDF and then open that PDF with "Group lines of text into text frames" selected. Then copy the required text frame back into the original document. -
Text Frame Styles
MickRose replied to EatMoreBacon's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
I agree that the Styles panel is half baked. Tagging objects with a colour in the Layers panel can be useful because you can then select all objects with the same colour and change fill, outline, insets etc. -
Hi @AndreasS - Bleed is always rectangular (I think). Printing stickers with a cutout shape is something different. The normal practice is the create a spot colour called CutContour and tag the outline shape with that spot colour. Then export to a PDF making sure to keep spot colours. I would check this with your print supplier. I would also suggest doing a forum search for "CutContour".

Hi @Stephen_H I understand what you are saying but I think you are seeing a problem that doesn't really exist. Any imposition software that a printing company uses will remove any inner bleed and keep any outer bleed. It doesn't matter what the exported PDF looks like - I agree it can look a bit messy with bits of facing pages appearing in the bleed area. Also, printing companies might normally provide an electronic PDF proof for you to check.

Convert from PMS to CMYK colour
MickRose replied to cje's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Double click the round fill area in the Colour panel or at the bottom of the Tools panel. That brings up the Colour Chooser. Then change one of the CMYK values, then back again. Easiest way is to use the mouse scrolling button to go up and then down. That changes the fill to CMYK rather than Pantone. -
Character transform shear not applied when text is printed
MickRose replied to coolpowers's topic in V2 Bugs found on Windows
Fault confirmed on Windows 10, except PDFs are exporting okay and the placed PDF with slanted text does print okay.- 4 replies

Hi @Print Monkey On the specific tent card question why not just use a Master Page with the top text frame rotating 180 degrees as required (for editing or outputing). There is no need to use spreads. Or am I misunderstanding the question?
