dominik reacted to enchiriadis in Batch-Import for images (for building musical scores)
Hi all,
sorry for delay in response..., has been busy last two days.
@Old Bruce Good idea with the Picture Frame on the Master Page. Can put it indeed into the background. Works fine while drag'n dropping one img after the other into the Pic-Frames. It dowesn't work with a batch of image-files....
@dominik PDF-Import works fine as well as long as I'll drag it page by page. Here as above, the pic-frame will scale it.
However: The idea with the picture-frame is really helpful. Thanks! Will put them into my template....
And yes..., I know, it's the very first version. So i choosed this suggestions-forum of APub for my little idea. However: For me the PDF-Export works even in this Beta better then the appropriate function in QuarkXPress. Have two more scores to set up and I think, I'll stay for them with APub...
Thanks again! :-)

dominik got a reaction from garrettm30 in PDF Editing?
Just the other day I had to change only one sentence in a one page PDF. The main font used in the PDF was not installed on my system but I found and installed it for that purpous. I tried with Adobe Acrobat pro, FlexiPDF and APub. All three were able to open the file and all three exposed the same display problems with the font (even though it was available and not substituted).
Changing the one sentence was possible but the overall result was different in comparison to the original.
What I want to say is: PDF in general is a delivery and not an editing format. It very much depends on the quality of how it was generated and also its complexity. Working with original files is always the better choice if possible (but obviously this is not the case many times )

dominik got a reaction from JET_Affinity in one more (needed) corner option
I think, what you are asking for is 'custom corner options'. Then everyone can design their's own corners (and perhaps share them, too).

dominik reacted to Mark Derricutt in "Affinity Writer" - Writing Persona / Linked Text / Markdown Processing idea
Hey all,
Long time lurker til the last few weeks when I reinstalled the Publisher beta to check up on it - I understand that AFP is predominantly a page layout focussed system (and after reading all the ePub threads I see that's a bug-bear for many people and I suspect "Affinity Writer" might be a good direction/bridge but let's avoid that for now).
I see that we can link/embed images so we can update the visual assets independently of the layout, but I've not seen anything similar for textual assets - which when writing more book/manual type content would be rather useful.
Coming from the tech world (software developer primarily) what I'd love to see is something like the following (that may be doable with simple scripting if/when that comes available):
Write my main content in a .txt file, or .md Markdown file - which is becoming a de facto markup format in the developer world Processor app/script that takes the markdown, and converts that to a AFP source - mapping the relevant heading 1/2/3, bullet point, body, code styles to AFP styles before including that in an initial text frame. Content appears in AFP rendered, with styles applied This would allow me update the .md files independent of page layout, using an editing environment more suited to writing content, running the document thru Grammarly/ProWritingAid.
I guess this could all come under a "Writing" persona.
Is this is a crazy idea, or something worth thinking about?

dominik reacted to Medical Officer Bones in Web developing tool in the works?
The reason why Adobe dropped Muse is quite simple: Muse's design view was decoupled from the actual html/css/js output. When the development team had to implement support for responsive page designs, it became quite clear how difficult such an approach is to maintain as developers while keeping up with the quickly evolving and changing web tech landscape.
Simply stated, Muse became a bear of an application to maintain and develop.
This is one of the main reasons why applications like WebPlus, Muse, and many others over the past decade have tried and utterly failed. Muse and its older brethren also tend to save to their custom proprietary file formats, rather than directly working with html, css, and js files (which is just plain silly, because those are open, human readable standards!). This made is pretty much impossible to work with a developer or in a team. A static Muse site's code is a horror, and utterly incompatible and unworkable for a developer to integrate with server-side code or convert to a CMS like WordPress theme (for example).
And it isn't even possible to open existing sites in Muse (again because of that decoupling mentioned earlier)!
Designers without an inkling about web coding couldn't care less about the code Muse, Xara, or WebPlus generates. They just want snazzy eye candy effects, and that was another reason why Muse tanked. Browsers are an ever-changing live target, and scripts/effects that may have worked two years ago, may cause issues in a newer browser. And let's not talk about the ridiculous size (file size) of some of those Muse sites.
In short, Muse was (is) a disastrous approach for proper web development. Great for the odd static eye-catching website or portfolio/online business card and for quick prototyping. For anything else just a Very Bad Idea. And an elephant of an application to maintain for its developers. Always running after the facts.
To my knowledge, the only surviving still developed purely visual off-line web page editors are Xara and Sparkle. And both rely on a proprietary file format. Which makes no sense to me: after all, the web is an open standard. Work with those standards, rather than against it. The only reason for a proprietary file format is to lock the customer into their own software ecosystem.
Sparkle is a good example how NOT to create output code: they proudly proclaim their home page is created with its home-grown software. Well, the code is atrocious. Designer may not care, but if you plan to work together with a developer, the code is unusable.
In contrast, an editor such as Pinegrow actually works WITH the html/css/js files, and will open any standard web page. The drawback is that basic knowledge of html and css is required to make the most out of it.
Can't have your cake and eat it too.

dominik got a reaction from rebekahly in Justify Text -- Way to clean up odd spacing between yet?
I am not quite sure if this is the solution for @rebekahly's question. 'Balance Text in Columns' makes both columns of about the same hight. But it does not change the spacing within the text.

dominik got a reaction from paulkc in Super A3 paper size
Hello @paulkc,
welcome to the forum.
You can create this format by yourself and save it as a custom preset. You then find these in the top most dropdown box (in 'File > New') under 'Presets'.
Cheers,

dominik got a reaction from Dean Reardon in Pictures in a text column issue
Interesting.
To me it looks like it has something to do with the filler text that is not expanded as a field. Try the same with regular text that fills both frames completely and you will see the jump wrap works as expected.
This leaves the question why is the filler text in frame 2 too short?
How did you create the two different text frames? Exactly the same way?

Sorry to disappoint you. There is no linking to text files of any kind, yet. Placing of docx files was improved recently.

dominik reacted to Gardenia in curved gradient
For fills there are linear, circular, conical etc gradients. It will be nice if we could add spline nodes to the spine of a linear gradient to be able to build curved gradients. This will be much better than the Illustrator meshes. Not sure this is possible. Just a suggestion.

dominik got a reaction from transitdiagrams in Used the beta for production level projects
Hi @cgrantmccool,
the thing is not that you can't already create something on production level quality. It's more about long term support and stability and workflow. It is possible to do 'one shot' publishings that most likely will not be used at a later time. I did successfully. But it would not be a good idea to start a project that may take several months to completion. There have been reported several cases here in the forum where users where stuck with a broken document.

dominik reacted to Ash in Publisher to be released in (less than) 3 weeks time.
Hi All - not sure if this has been said already, but we will be putting a slide in the Publisher Beta welcome screen (Help -> Welcome) which will offer the pre-order for the additional discount for beta testers. This should go live tomorrow late afternoon / evening. This will allow anyone using the beta to claim that discount in the event they haven't received the email, and will also allow you to claim twice (or an additional time if you've already used your email voucher) if you want to get both the Window and Mac version at the beta tester price.
Note - there will be a pre-order offer slide appear in Photo and Designer tomorrow too, but it's only if you follow the link from the slide in the Publisher beta where you get the extra 10%
Hope that helps with some of these questions. We're incredibly grateful for all the support you have given us during the beta and are really keen to make sure you all get the opportunity to get the extra discount, and figured this was the best way to make that happen.
Thanks,
Ash

I assume this will come with the Photo Persona. Indeed, APub does not have a brush tool and masks are of limited use for now.

You can apply masks to any object. To picture frames, too. Look for the little icon at the bottom of the layers panel:

You're welcome! It's a little thing but it really helps. As of now, you're really limited on what you can use for style shortcuts.
