"Temporary Shortcut" to Zoom
dominik replied to Serenak's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I don't have a tablet like this (apart from the iPad) so I value your statement as a possible future shopping recommendation. Wacom's seem to have a certain reputation. Interesting to hear that Apple is not alway perfect (in your point of view) d. -

Thanks @fde101, I am glad to have a real mouse wheel under my finger. I assume this qualifies me to be 'old fashioned' Please consider my Apple Pencil as an utensil to step onto the next level d. -

"Temporary Shortcut" to Zoom
dominik replied to Serenak's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I am not really familiar with Apple computers and hardware. So, it is possible to mimick a CTRL+mousewheel action with a 'magic mouse'? Even my Windows laptop offers with it's trackpad this two fingers gesture. And I just discovered that this together with the CTRL-key zooms in and out. You learn something new every day d. -
"Temporary Shortcut" to Zoom
dominik replied to Serenak's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Yes for sure. The idea is to remap to a key that is close to the CMD (or CTRL) key and is not used by another tool. On either side of the keyboard whatever fits personal needs best. d. -

Congratulations! I'm glad you found a way to get this done. And this in the limited environment of APup without the full fuctionality d. -
How do I feather this?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I think we're propabely trapped by the fact that APub is not finished yet. As of this early beta all the extra functionality that will come with APh and AD integrated in APub is just not there yet. This is a known limitation and you are right to look into a temporary solution in the meantime. Cheers, d. -
How do I feather this?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Yes, because I wouldn't know how to call it correctly I meant to refer to the Transparency Tool that offers to apply a gradual shift of transparency from value A to value B (or even more if you add stops inbetween). d. -
How do I feather this?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Yeah, delve in there It will be easier once it is possible to paint with a pixel brush on the mask (= version 1.7 of APh is integrated into APub). BTW, in the mean time you could switch to APh and play there with masks to get a hang of it. Cheers, d. -
How do I feather this?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Hi Chris26, thanks for the screenshot, that helps. I was referring to a transparency 'gradient' that is exactly horizontally. That way you can fade the right border of the top image and a transparency of 0 (zero) is assigned to the pixels at the right border. If you apply a transparency diagonally you will have pixels of different transparency along the border and this creates the effect as seen above. What you can try (I'm not at my APub computer right now) is to assign multiple transparencies. The first one like the one you show in your screenshot. Then you create a group of the pictureframe of the top image (not both images). Then you can apply a horizontal transparency fade from left (no transparency) to right (full transparency). This should give a smooth transition. d. -

Hello @afdojo, welcome to the forum! Once you typed in your text switch to the move tool (V). The you see at the top of the text frame an extra handle. This one is to rotate the entire text frame. If you hold down the SHIFT key while rotating you can easily clock in 90 degrees. The other way would be to look at the Transform Panel. There is an input field labeled 'R:' which stands for rotation. There you type in 90 and hit ENTER. I hope that helps. Cheers, d. -
Why are there TWO lock children buttons?

dominik replied to nyghtfalcon's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Hi @nyghtfalcon, welcome to the forum. Footnotes are not supported yet. Regarding the missing screen capture with your post: I think new users to the forum have to post a certain amount (3?) of posts before they can use attachments. See 'Text > Spelling > Show Spelling Options' and in preferences 'Auto-Correct'. I hope this is what you are looking for Cheers, d. -
Why are there TWO lock children buttons?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Hi @walt.farrell, please see my post (with screenshot) from today. If APub's window is not wide enough the 'Lock children' checkbox get's cut off and is hidden behind a double right arrow flyout sign. Can you find it there? d. -
Hi @Mr. K, as Patrick Connor from Serif posted a short time ago the help is still work in progress. So we, the forumsters, have to help each other The 'Page Box' referres to a placed PDF (or embedded document. I assume this will also apply to placed APub documents...?). You can choose what part of a placed document you want to show. Does this make sense? d.

"Temporary Shortcut" to Zoom
dominik replied to Serenak's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I see, so you don't have a mouse wheel You could remap in Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts>Tools>Zoom to a key close to the left Command key (on my german keyboard this would be '<' on an english keyboard this is '\' as far as I know). Then you could toggle to zoom and back to the previous tool. Not the same but not bad, either d. -
How do I feather this?
dominik replied to Chris26's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
OK, I understand. Then you should be able to accomplish what you want. You just have to make sure that 100% transparency is not outside the top object. Otherwise you get that kind of abrupt dividing line. I'm sorry, my advice towards masks in APub is a little misleading at the moment. They will be fully usable once the Photo Persona is enabled. At the moment there are no pixel tools in APub and you cannot paint on a mask with a brush. That is what I was thinking of. What you can do at the moment is apply a gradient (from white to black) to a mask. This fades out the image as well. But it is basically the same as the Transparency Tool. From what you write about your experience with masks in Photoshop I do not have to explain you anything in this regard I assume you are aware of the mask tutorials for APh at vimeo? After a little training, experimenting and getting used to it I am able to handle masks quite good in Affinity Photo and Designer. d. -

Look into the transparency tool (Y). Or look into masks. I'm in a hurry but I'm sure you'll figure this out. d. -

CTRL + mousewheel zooms in and out. In preferences you can even set 'Use mouse wheel to zoom'. Then no modifier key at all is required. d. -
Hi @MartinHH, there is a way to determine the aspect ratio after you have created a picture frame. Draw the frame of about the size you need it. Then, in the transform panel, type into the height field the following: w/4*3. This translates into: divide the width of the frame by 4 and then multiply it with 3. This sizes the frame exactly in 4x3 ratio. You then can resize the picture frame by holding down the SHIFT key with this fixed aspect ratio. To create a picture frame with 1x1 ratio (= square) hold down the SHIFT key while creating it. I agree, a dropdown with presets would be a good enhancement, though d.

Publisher beta, marking text
dominik replied to Ulf Zakariassen's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Hallo @Ulf Zakariassen, welcome to the forum. To me it seems as if you have in the snapping manager 'Show snapping candidates' enabled. Is this the case? d. -
In the case that your APub window is not wide enough the toolbar kind of get's cut off. In that case at the very right end a little double arrow (see #1 in the screenshow below) shows up. Once you click on it a small flyout menu reveals 'Lock Children' (see #2 in this screenshot): You should not 'select and CTRL+click' but only 'CTRL+click' to select it. This only selects the image within the picture frame and then (without CTRL) you can move it around. I hope this makes things clearer d.

I do use Adobe Bridge which is good enough for many of my (limited) needs but I was a little unhappy with the preview of certain images. It seemed to be unsharp compared to the acutal files. This made me look around for an alternative (many of them are mentioned in threads in this forum, just search for DAM and look into the thread with the most pages ) and to my surprise XNviewMP does a good job. Especially since it is able to preview *.afphoto and *.afdesign files (on Windows, I don't know about Mac and Linux). It currently does not preview APub files but I could imagine this will come at a later time. d.
