  1. Hi all, Running into a major issue right now. ALL my versions of Photo and Designer keep crashing the moment I try to move a layer in the stack. This happens with both 1.x and 2.x versions of the applications, and in new or existing files. I did receive a Windows 10 update this weekend, but I cannot imagine to have such an effect on the Affinity apps. Anyone else seeing this popping up? I'm dead in the water right now, and have to deliver final images this week cheers for any tips, thoughts etc.... rob Edit: it also happens when I try to add a mask to any layer in the stack. Something is really wrong here
  2. Aahhhh.... There it is hiding! Still adjusting from years of Illustrator abuse Thanks, appreciate the quick reply! 👍
  3. Hi all, I'm in the process of finalizing a little logo, and it was build up by closed curve shapes and basic curves. All this resulting in a stylized 'merge' of two letters. The closed curves are easily combined/merged into one shape, but I want the open curves (w thickness) to become a shape , so I can merge it into the rest for the logo to become one 'object'. If I try to merge the open curve with a closed curved shape, the open curve disappears. I found that you can convert shapes to curves, but the other way around isn't possible? Cheers for any tips, or a pointer to the spot in the manual! rob
  4. Haven't had much time to get back to this post, but thanks for all the answers and suggestions I'll have another look at this. cheers! rob
  5. Hi all, Maybe I'm overlooking something simple here, but when I export to PDF my layer names are not copied over. I tried this in Illustrator, and it looks like it works there. or at least the Illustrator PDF honors the layer name. Is this a Designer thing? e.g. I have certain layers named to the appropriate PMS color, but in the PDF it's all called 'rectangle' for the colored placeholder in that layer. I tried every preset in the export option, but no luck. Tried v1 and v2 of Designer to see if that would make a difference. cheers! rob edit: Illustrator also keep my layer/sublayer order intact. Maybe this is something Adobe, but it's a bit annoying to see Affinity is throwing all in one 'pile'.
  6. If this is really the case, this a major issue. E V E R Y application can work just fine with files from a external location. I never had any issues working from my Windows Server with Affinity, but if this is really the case I might just stop using Affinity software until this madness is fixed. What is this? the 90's????
  7. I would say Designer. Publisher is like Adobe's Indesign, which is used to create books and leaflets and such. If it's just a 'one page' design, just use Designer. You can export a PDF after you're done with the design. And Adobe Acrobat is a PDF reader by design, although it got fat with useless features...... rob
  8. Yeah, Looked on the web as well. There are some things to be found, but maybe not to my liking? Will do a bit more searching. thanks! rob
  9. Hi, I meant Publisher, not Designer LOL..... But I searched the forum a bit, and it seems there's not a lot out there unfortunately... rob
  10. Hi all, After years of genealogy 'hunting', I'm finally about to embark on a 'familytree book', all done in Designer. Publisher.. I'm not really sure if there are templates out there for setting up something like this, also for print later on. I know there's some web based printing companies out there that could print your design. So if anyone knows where to find nice Designer templates as a basis to start from, I'm all ears. There's no templates in the store, and in the resources it's a bit of a hunt.... thanks! rob
  11. Is there -ANY- reason to work like this? Would a regular HD not better suited? I like USB sticks, but not for active usage like yours. ;)
  12. I tried running without OpenCL turned on, but now, after turning on 'Live Projection' I cannot access any dropdown menu's anymore and the app is non-responsive. So I have to close the app. And again from the Task manager this time because it is not fully closed, which also removes the memory bloat. I tried multiple options in this, but it's not in a usable state for me atm. Not sure if I can add more to this unfortunately.
  13. @Chris B I know it's not been that long, but is there any insight into this behavior? Maybe a possible fix for a upcoming 1.10.5 soon? Love to hear something on this.
  14. @i5963c Just some quick answers on this, as I'm having a busy day today In my tests I had HA turned on, but never saw any issues with the VRAM arise. Maybe due to the somewhat older card I'm using, VRAM is treated differently? VRAM usage was always within the limits of the card, never really acceding 2 Gb of VRAM. And with crashes I mean anything from 'back to desktop' crashes, but also 'not responding' for minutes issues. Anything that will force me to kill the application manually is a crash for me. Hope that makes sense, and I have some more time next week, to dive into this if neccessary rob
  15. @Chris B Had a little bit of time to play around with settings and try to consistently see what AP is doing. Again, let me start by saying we work with large 35K, 32 bit pano's. File size is appr. 7,5Gb per pano. Also still using AP 1.9.2 due to 'reasons'. I tweaked the performance settings a bit by upping the RAM usage for AP to 24Gb, and limiting the undo's to 24 before some tests. - Opening a 35K pano isn't much of an issue, it just takes a while for AP to load it. You can see the progress slowly getting to 100% in the 'percentage ticker'. - RAM or VRAM at this point isn't taxed at all. VRAM is roughly holding on 2 Gb, and RAM used for loading the pano is slightly over 4 Gb. Now totaling appr. 8,6 Gb of RAM for the system. - Now I add the live projection to the pano layer, and the RAM usage shoots up with appr. 20 Gb to almost 29 Gb. Rotating the pano around will add another couple of hundreds Mb's of RAM. - So I end up with appr. 30 Gb of RAM in total used by the system. Some paint actions might add add another few hundred Mb's of RAM to the mix. (RAM in the system is 64 Gb btw.) - When done with editing, I release the Live projection, which also takes a while. Sometimes AP crashes on this. Strange thing is the RAM usage after the projection release is way higher than before the projection. Often hovering around 20 Gb compared to 8,6 Gb. - And after closing the pano, not all of this RAM is released. AP often 'sticks to' the RAM usage, slowly going up and down a couple of hundred Mb's. Or AP releases some, but 'sticks' to something around 16 Gb of RAM while not closed. So 'hoarding' over 11 Gb of RAM before we loaded the pano. At this point AP will often crash when you close it. RAM will be released after a successful closing of AP. Or crash I did this several times, and RAM usage and AP behavior is similar every time. Hope it helps. rob
  16. Graphic cards.. One of the PC's still has an oldie GTX970, but that performs well for other software The other one(s) I have to ask around, we're not all on the same location and I'm the tech head of the bunch... Ah... Have to add we're doing 32 bit, full float 35K HDR panos. Not sure how that changes the equation...
  17. We see this on various PC's, ranging from somewhat 'older' CPU's to the one year old setup. RAM is always 32-64GB, and VRAM is always 4GB+ We use dedicated disks for temp data where ever possible with lots of space to fill. Looking at the Task Manager, we never tax the RAM of VRAM. Unfortunately this project cannot be shared due to NDA's. I have to see if we can share a similar image for testing.
  18. @Chris B Running into some of these issues myself with Photo 1.9.x What is the resolution limit for panorama's and/or the Live projection on a latlong image for repaint in Photo? Or is this just limited to RAM or VRAM? In that case there's something wrong, as my system is never fully taxed. I'm trying to use Live Projection on fairly large (30+K) panos, but it's almost unusable due to similar issues as stated by @i5963c cheers, rob
  19. In my experience, automatic backups are a pain in the behind and can be a serious diskspace eater (3D apps).... It sounds good on paper, but I never use it. It's better to have some working form of 'crash save' and do the versioning of a file manually, based on certain work done in the file. I feel for the OP though, as a corrupt file happens to all of us at least once. The reason is often shrouded somewhere in the combination of a hardware-OS-application hickup.... my € 0,02
  20. Hi, Just played with the tool, and it's exactly what I want. It's also a great way to separate fills for using them in 3D as separate objects. Will be happy to see this arrive in 1.9 rob
  21. Hi, Sounds like something that fits the bill. I might try that one. At least I'm not overlooking a tool in 1.8.5 rob
  22. Hi, Maybe not the best description, but not sure how to make it more clear I'm trying to see if the following is possible in Designer: I want to have the visual result of an object with a fill color and a outline color, but being two objects. This is easy to do when your objects are simple in shape. But imagen a closed, curvy object drawn with the pen tool. I give it a fill and no stroke. I now copy this object on top, but now want thisa one to be say 10pt. smaller on the border edge, so it follows the other shape precisely, but smaller. Like the one shape with a fill and border. I ran into this a couple of times already. (imagen a curved bottle, with fluid inside that has to follow the bottle curves, but with some extra tweaks at the top of the fluid) Maybe something like a expand/shrink on a pixel selection? cheers! rob
  23. To add to this, -ALL- my 1.8.4 updates applications stopped working with my Wacom Intuos 4...... I cannot draw or select anything in my artwork. I can do that when I use a mouse. I can access the menu's or add a layer with my pen/tablet. In the FAQ's I found something about changing Wintab stuff in 1.8.4. Is this related? Oh... And I use the pen in 'mouse mode'. Pretty bummed out with this, reverting back to 1.8.3 as long as this behavior exist. rob OK, it seems the workaround as mentioned in the FAQ works for now. It might be nice to had a heads up before installing this though. And I saw the latest beta has a tablet prefs section now for this.
  24. Hi, never been there, but will have a look thanks!
  25. Hi all, I haven't really had time to look into this due to time constraints on other work (sorry....), but is there any good IT related (pref. vector) artwork available for the Affinity apps? It would be nice to directly use stuff from a e.g. artwork/icon library instead of importing things. If there's no such thing yet, any tips, links etc. to useful artwork relating IT subjects - think artwork regarding pc, tablet, phone, internet, switches, routers, viruses, malware, hacking etc. imagery - and basic chart/graph/diagram stuff will be greatly appreciated! Anything to make slides more interesting to look at, but avoiding the more standard (cheesy) photo stuff you find on a Google search or at a stock site. So something that looks a bit more pleasing and professional, and make it possible to quickly start building up presentation material ;) Free or commercial work is not an issue. cheers all for any answers, rob
