Hokusai got a reaction from Frozen Death Knight in Exorcising my Demons with Designer
It has been a while since I've shared anything here on the forums but I haven't been slacking. I've been enjoying playing around with Publisher and I've been using Designer as much as I can. I've also been busy toiling away on a bunch of projects and I thought I would share one with you that I've been working on for close to a year now. I have been working on it in my spare time before and after work to help relieve stress but it took much longer than I had expected. I completed most of it with my old iMac (a 2009 with only 4 gigabytes of RAM) but the last quarter of it I did with a Mac that was much more powerful and it was so much faster (still an old Mac but with more RAM and a better processor)! To me, seeing that people can create complex drawings using old hardware is a testament to how well Designer is made. My compliments to MattP and everyone on the Designer Team at Serif for all of your hard work. I'm looking forward to Designer version 2.0 to see what other wonderful tools you will give us to use.
My version is roughly based on an old European print from 1480 or so (the original title I believe is The Tempting of St. Anthony). Everything was done using Affinity Designer on a Mac running Mojave and everything is vector. I used several versions of Designer but I think mostly 1.7.1 and 1.7.2. If you like this drawing, check out my other drawings of Don Quixote and The Four Horsemen. Thanks for taking the time to view my work and I hope that you enjoy it.

Hokusai reacted to Alfred in a Book in Affinity Publisher
Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Herbie, and congratulations on the completion of your book!
Even If you could attach the book here, probably only a few people would read all of it. Why not attach some screenshots showing the layout of a few of the pages?

Hokusai got a reaction from Patrick Connor in Art Nouveau Absinthe
I have been wanting to do my own version of an Art Nouveau piece for awhile and I just happen to come across an old poster that was originally created by Henri Privat-Livemont and I thought it would be a good one to recreate with vectors using Designer. I added quite a bit more shading and some other minor things here and there. I normally don't use any effects in my work as I prefer to keep things purely vector but with this one I used two effects to help soften the colours on the face. The effects can easily be removed and it doesn't take away from the picture much but in the end I decided that it looked better with the effects. I've also included a view of the outlines that were used.

Hokusai got a reaction from Lutz Pietschker in Distribute in a circular pattern
I don't know if this is possible or not. I have always found the Distribute "horizontally" and "vertically" useful but there are times when I would like to be able to distribute things in a circular pattern. Sometimes I have a bunch of straight lines or rectangular boxes and I want them to be distributed in a circular pattern (normally around a circular centre but not always). Now I have to do it manually and it is time consuming. If it is a few shapes then it isn't such a big deal to do it manually but if it is many boxes, then it is a pain. It would be great if I could choose the centre shape and then have boxes or lines to be distributed around the centre shape evenly.

I'd prefer something better than what is offered in Illustrator and hopefully that is what the guys are cooking up, that is my hope anyways!

And, for anyone who wanted Lasso node selection...
LassoNodeSelection.mov
To use it, in the Node tool with a curve layer selected, you just hold Alt and either click to start polygon mode or drag to start free hand mode.

Hokusai reacted to Mithferion in Running Before You Can Walk - Missing Some Basics
Ah, like when it took Adobe 30 years to have a Crop Tool in Illustrator, or that time when they had their users without the Handles snapping to the Grid capability for two complete years in said Application.
Best regards!

Hokusai got a reaction from Alfred in utility for vectorization
marno2013,
Hello marno2013, this is something that has been discussed (and requested) in quite a few places but a good place to find out more information about ways vectorize raster images outside of Affinity Designer and then get them back there is here:
This thread has quite a bit of information about it. I hope that helps.
Best regards,

You might want to rethink your post. Its wording is a little strong and it doesn't come across very well.

Hokusai reacted to MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.7.0.5)
Status: Beta
Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
Mac App Store: Not submitted
Download: Here
SPECIAL NOTE: The files created by this new version of Designer 1.7.0.5 will not be compatible with earlier version of Affinity (Designer, Photo or Publisher). You will need to wait for an update to Publisher or Photo 1.7 Beta for compatibility! Please do not use this version if you will be adversely affected by this temporary lack of cross-product compatibility!
Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the beta of Affinity Designer 1.7 for macOS.
Designer 1.7 is a significant change to the currently shipping 1.6 version. Files edited in this version will not be backwards-compatible with the shipping 1.6 version. As such, we would not recommend using this 1.7 version for critical or production work at this stage. It is inevitable that there were will be a number of issues with 1.7 but we hope these will be minor and aim to resolve any issues very quickly, so please use it and explore the new features, but also do keep in mind that you may find snags and we would appreciate your help with finding and reporting these to us.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
It’s also worth noting that we aren’t done yet - we are still working through reported bugs from previous releases and hope to fix as many as possible before the final release of 1.7.
With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this initial release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.
Many thanks,
Matt
Please refer to previous beta updates for a full list of all changes to date. This latest update includes many new tweaks and improvements, but also the following larger changes:
Arrowheads
Multiple lines and fills per-object (via the new Appearance panel)
Point Transform tool (currently available from the Node tool flyout on the main tools toolbar)
Node and Pen tool tweaks
Layers panel overhaul - multiple thumbnail preview sizes, optional checkerboard background and colour tags available from right-click context menu
Added new transform option to Move tool (‘Transform Objects Separately’) for multiple selections
New icons
Symmetry lock in the raster Paintbrush tool
Fix for Text-on-path text positioning issues
PDF import and export improvements

So here it is, the official picture of me meeting Theo to collect my award for my children's picture books and preschool website mystrawberrymonkey.com All the characters, both books and website were all created in Affinity Designer! It's been an exciting journey so far. This just goes to show that with an idea, a little dreaming and a lot of determination can take you to amazing places.

Hokusai reacted to evtonic3 in Live Text in Outline View
It would be helpful to see in outline mode, live text that is in a document. At this time live text and converted to curves text both appear the same making it difficult to find them in case one needs to convert any stragglers that need to be converted. A filled with black preview would be nice. I've seen that somewhere.

It might also be worthwhile to try to ask others here how you might solve the problems that you are having. You might mention the OS that you are using and the computer specs, etc as that will help to pin down what might be causing the problem. In addition the wonderful support staff here, there are tons of really useful users who will go out of their way to help to sove problems that others are having. Also, Jaffa offers some words of wisdom and I agree with him 100%!
Best regards,

Hi euclidpb - that annoys me too, but far outweighing that -- is the results you can get and the support available. Why not give it a try whilst things in limbo. Might be one of the best decisions you have ever made! JMTCW.
