Hokusai got a reaction from 0Kami in Lie Yukkou
I work more heavily with and I am more familiar with Japanese art but I have a soft spot for all Asian art. In the past year or so I've seen so many beautiful Chinese prints and pictures and when I saw this one some months ago, I thought it would be a great one for me to do in my style. I did this one with all vectors in Affinity Designer and I did two versions, one regular and one that shows the wind but something about the wind bothered me but I decided to present it as well even though I feel that it is distracting and not as good as the one without the wind. One thing I'd love to see added to Designer sometime is some vector brushes or different vector strokes with customizable ends so that I could more easily replicate the look of using a fude (Japanese brush or a similar style ink brush normally used to write calligraphy but is great to draw with too) using pure vectors.
This picture is my stylized version of Lie Yukkou, a famous Daoist philosopher based on an old picture by a Chinese artist named Zhang Lu.
Thanks for taking time to view my work.
Best regards,

Hokusai reacted to A_B_C in Working cover for book two. I have to write the book.
Oh, I wasn’t aware, David, that you already had a book out there! So yes, consistency is surely a thing to consider. But in any case, since your style is so unique, I wondered if you could complement it with a font that’s a little more fancy and in style. 😀
And Ed Benguiat’s typefaces are indeed classics. House Industries have a lovely little collection of his lettering and poster designs. I imagine you could also draw some inspiration from the typefaces by Emigre. There are also quite a few nice and free sci-fi or retro fonts out there in the wild. Sure, you’ll have to invest some time to work through the results of your favorite search engine, but there are some little treasures to dig up, for sure. 😀
All the best, Alex

Hokusai reacted to fde101 in Merge Layers for Designer
In the Affinity products they are separate layers, which complicates things from that perspective as depending on what the OP is really after it may be something that has no direct equivalent in the Affinity products or something which would need to be handled quite differently.
If this is in fact what the OP is after, what would probably be the closest possible equivalent in the Affinity products (something that also does not currently seem to exist) would be a "New Layer Containing Selected" command which works like the Group command, but embedding the selected layers inside a Layer layer (the naming of these could use a bit of work) rather than a Group layer.
Currently you can do the equivalent of that by using the Group command to group the objects and then choose Promote Group to Layer from the Layer menu to convert the Group layer to a Layer layer, so two commands instead of one... Group has a keyboard shortcut (Command+G on the Mac), and you could assign one to Promote Group to Layer from within Preferences if that would help.

Hokusai reacted to Alfred in Adding handles
Your example only affected one segment at a time, but Martin’s point is that instead of only affecting the control handle at one end of the chosen segment it affected the handles at both ends.

MEB's explanation is good but I added this just to give you a visual aid.

Hokusai got a reaction from Alfred in Adding handles
Alfred,
I'm guessing that Martin is thinking of like how it works in Photoshop (sorry I don't have a copy of Illustrator that is easily to get to right now). When you are drawing with the pen tool (even vector paths) you can Alt+Click and it will delete one handle, leaving you with a handle on only one side leaving you free to adjust only one side of the path. I thought Illustrator could do this too but I can't remember but I do know that Photoshop does this. It is sometimes helpful.

Martin,
Sorry I misunderstood what you were requesting but I understand now. That's a good suggestion. I wouldn't be surprised if it is already in there hidden somewhere, if not it would be a welcomed addition.

CLC,
Thanks! I wasn't sure if it was just me or something odd about the system I running or what? I'll check out the links that you posted.

Hokusai reacted to CLC in Pan tool sticks
Hi @Hokusai
To me it's still an issue, and I'm not alone.
Sometimes it unstucks after some time, sometime switching to another persona and back works, sometimes I have to restart the app just like you.
I wish this got fixed since it's quite annoying.

Hokusai got a reaction from CLC in Pan tool sticks
I'm using what I think is the latest version of Affinity Designer (1.8.3 and I'm using Mojave 10.14.6) and often times when I'm drawing it somehow switches to the pan tool and then I can not get it to go back to the pen tool (or any other tool). I know this used to be an issue at one time but I haven't seen it for a while but it is happening a lot for me with the latest version. Once it switches to the pan tool, it is difficult to switch to another tool. Using the shortcut keys doesn't let me switch and neither does clicking on the tools in the tool bar. The only way to get Designer to switch to another tool is to zoom out or zoom in and then it releases the pan tool and lets me choose another tool. It is very frustrating and if anyone knows how I can keep it from doing this I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm also having issues with screen redraws but I'm not sure how to describe it. It seems to happen when I'm zoomed in and I click and make a node and then pull the bezier handles towards an area that is currently off screen. The handles disappear and lines showing me the length and direction of the handles disappear. Maybe this is how it is intended but I wouldn't think so because it only does this when I am working near the edge of a document. It isn't a big problem but just something that I was curious about.
Other than these two issues, things have been working great for me. In my use of Designer the expand stroke is working much better and so are the boolean operations. Thanks to Matt and all the developers working on Designer! Great job!

Hokusai got a reaction from Boldlinedesign in Things still on my wish list for Affinity
Are you referring to the Node tool (the white arrow)? There is a trick for it to allow you to select multiple nodes with a selection by first selecting the object with the Node tool and then holding down the Option key and drawing or moving your mouse around the nodes you want to select. Sorry I don't know the Windows modifier but I'm sure someone else here does. I'm not sure if this is what you are after or not but it is worth giving it a try.
Best of Luck,

Hokusai got a reaction from Markio in Things still on my wish list for Affinity
Hi dominik,
Here are two screen shots which I hope shows the different styles. The regular one that you described is just a regular marquee type. The one with the modifier (with the Option key on the Mac) gives you greater control over which nodes (or points) are selected by letting you "draw" the selection as opposed to just selecting broadly. I'm guessing this is the difference but there maybe be something else, I'm just not sure.

On Windows I don't have to use a modifier key. I just drag the mouse and that way nodes get selected.

Hokusai got a reaction from Busenitz in Macros/Actions in Affinity Designer
rachmac,
I would guess that Macro/Actions will be added to Designer sometime in the future seeing how it is already in Photo. I too think it would be a welcomed addition to Designer. Maybe version 2.0?

Hokusai got a reaction from Frozen Death Knight in Exorcising my Demons with Designer
It has been a while since I've shared anything here on the forums but I haven't been slacking. I've been enjoying playing around with Publisher and I've been using Designer as much as I can. I've also been busy toiling away on a bunch of projects and I thought I would share one with you that I've been working on for close to a year now. I have been working on it in my spare time before and after work to help relieve stress but it took much longer than I had expected. I completed most of it with my old iMac (a 2009 with only 4 gigabytes of RAM) but the last quarter of it I did with a Mac that was much more powerful and it was so much faster (still an old Mac but with more RAM and a better processor)! To me, seeing that people can create complex drawings using old hardware is a testament to how well Designer is made. My compliments to MattP and everyone on the Designer Team at Serif for all of your hard work. I'm looking forward to Designer version 2.0 to see what other wonderful tools you will give us to use.
My version is roughly based on an old European print from 1480 or so (the original title I believe is The Tempting of St. Anthony). Everything was done using Affinity Designer on a Mac running Mojave and everything is vector. I used several versions of Designer but I think mostly 1.7.1 and 1.7.2. If you like this drawing, check out my other drawings of Don Quixote and The Four Horsemen. Thanks for taking the time to view my work and I hope that you enjoy it.

Hokusai got a reaction from jenda in Is there a vector erase tool in Affinity Designer?
I'm surprised that a vector eraser isn't on the Roadmap. It is something that is requested a lot. A knife tool is useful in some situations but there are others where an eraser would work better. In addition to Affinity Designer, I also have iDraw (before it was bought out) and it features a wonderful vector eraser tool (although other areas of the program are lacking) and I really wish that Designer had something along the same lines.
