I would like to be able to set which one I want and not to have to keep setting it. It is nice to have the option to change it if I need to but most of the time I only want winding. In my work, I always use winding, but the default is alternative. Would it be possible to make it user definable or at least have the program remember which one I used last?

That would be a great idea, it would help a lot (in my opinion).

Sorry, I also wanted to know if Affinity creates a saved file somewhere else?
-
I have a file I was working on and when Affinity Designer crashed, I restarted my computer and opened the file but it hadn't been saved since I had saved it the first time. I was working on the file for almost an hour so it should have autosaved at some point but it didn't. Am I missing something here? My autosave settings are the default settings.

Matt,
Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't sure but I was guessing that it was a bug. I'm glad that it is something that is easily fixed. Keep up the great work!

Matt,
I have a question for you about colour. Before you mentioned that this was fixed but it still seems odd to me. I have been using the latest beta but at least one place is still not 100% black (and my document's colour space is CMYK). It still shows up as C-94 M-84 Y-84 K-84. If this is supposed to be registration?

I too am very happy with Affinity Designer and I'm looking forward to Affinity Publisher but I do have one concern. It isn't really a big thing and it doesn't have anything to do with features or use-ability it is more about image. I worry that with the name "Publisher" might give people the wrong impression. For as long as I can remember, Publisher (the name) has been used to refer to the abomination that is Microsoft Publisher. For those who have never used it or who have never had to try to get one through a RIP then consider yourself lucky. I just hope that people don't think that Affinity Publisher and Microsoft Publisher are in anyways related. All the professional graphics people that I know and have known, all of them have many horror stories about Microsoft Publisher. I know that Affinity Publisher won't be like that but it is name association. Just something to think about.

CalvinCoolridge,
If you have lots of fonts and managing them is important to you, then you should think about investing in a font managing application like Suitcase Fusion, Font Explorer X, Fontcase, or other similar type applications. If you use lots of different fonts for many different projects a dedicated font manager will help. If you aren't a professional designer and you don't have or use lots of different fonts then you wouldn't really need it. I'm just like Dave, I always have more fonts than I ever remember installing.

This might be something already discussed but I noticed as well today that even with Locked layers, objects can still be drawn on a Locked layer just not edited.
-
In Affinity Designer even though layers are hidden or the visibility is switched off I can still draw on them but the drawing doesn't show up. This seems counter-intuitive to me. To me, a hidden layer should be locked while it is invisible. This problem is compounded because I have to keep scrolling through the layer sub-menus to hide or show individual items and then occasionally I accidentally select the layer below the one that I'm working on and then I draw something (not knowing that I'm on a different layer) and when I add colour, it doesn't show up because it is invisible. This could be fixed by two things (I've put in a request already for the first one some time ago) a "Hide/Show" individual shapes with a key command so I don't have to continue scrolling and scrolling through huge lists of layer sub-menus (just like command + 3 in Illustrator). This makes managing documents with lots and lots of shapes so much easier. The second is to have Hidden Layers unselectable or locked while they are hidden. Maybe there is a good reason that I can't think of for this. If so, could someone please enlighten me. Thanks!

supervolting,
I agree with you, Inkscape is a very powerful vector program but the original poster needs something user-friendly and easy to use, that isn't Inkscape. Inkscape's user-interface is horrible. Sure it is powerful but just not user-friendly at all. Affinity Design has, in my opinion, a relatively easy learning curve. I think it is more intuitive in many areas than Illustrator. While Inkscape is free, I would gladly pay for a program that had a better user-interface (and it is well worth it). Affinity Designer is powerful and yet it won't break the bank so there is no reason not to use it to learn more about drawing and using vectors.

KateM,
Thanks for posting the PDF file! I enjoyed reading it a lot. Are the videos posted somewhere so that people reading the PDF files can watch them?

Dave,
Thanks for the info and the link. The link was a very informative. I'm sorry I think you may have misunderstood me. I know that Arial and Helvetica aren't exactly the same just that they are very similar looking. I would guess that people who aren't into typography and fonts wouldn't be able to tell them apart. I was just explaining what Walter was saying. I could understand his point because ever since I started working in graphics, Arial has always been considered as an inferior version of Helvetica (at least in the print/design world). Now I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with Arial and I'm not saying that it is an inferior font just that many people who have worked in desktop publishing, pre-press, or design might think that because they are normally taught that Arial is a Windows copy of Helvetica. This probably started back in the early days of computer typesetting and while it isn't true, it is widely believed. In fact, until I read the page that you linked to, I thought that Arial was a copy of Helvetica (I knew that they weren't exactly the same but I figured that Arial had a few changes so as not to infringe on any copyright or something like that). That was what was taught to me back when I first studied typography at university. Thanks for setting me straight. Just keep in mind that some Mac users still consider Arial a "Windows" font and so they have negative thoughts about it.

Ben,
That is interesting that you and Dave both don't know that Arial was made to look like Helvetica. I thought it was a well known fact.
From Wikipedia "Arial was created to be metrically identical to the popular typeface Helvetica, with all character widths identical, so that a document designed in Helvetica could be displayed and printed correctly without having to pay for a Helvetica license."
-
Dave,
You must not be a Typography guy so I will fill you in, Arial is a copy of Helvetica.

TonyB,
Vector Magic is $295 for the desktop version! That is expensive! Is it better than the old Streamline application or other similar apps?
-
MEB,
Again thanks. I thought that there must be a way to do it but I couldn't find a menu option that would let me move things from one layer to another. Very convenient way of moving things. I thought about using the Cut command but because I didn't see "paste into place" I didn't think that cutting and pasting would allow me to maintain position.
-
MEB,
Great thanks! I had seen the option for Winding in the Fill Mode but I had no idea what it was for.
-
I'm not sure if this has been requested or not. In fact it might already be in Affinity Designer but I couldn't find an option to move an object from one layer to another (without changing its position). I looked for it in the beta as well and I couldn't find it. If it is there could someone clue me into where to look and if it isn't there, I would like to suggest it to be added (in time of course).

I was just curious if this is by design or not? When I draw a shape using the pen tool, if I cross back into the shape that I'm drawing it creates a drop-out effect when I add colour to it. I have attached an example file to better illustrate my question. Is there any way to change the behaviour of the pen via a setting or something? Thanks.
-
+1 for this. As Matthias said, it is very useful.
-
MEB,
Thanks for the info. I'll download the beta and give it a try. I was hesitant because I wasn't sure if running the beta along with the app store version was a good idea. I thought it might cause some problems.
-
Matt,
Thanks for the explanation. You are correct, I'm using the version that I bought through the Apple App store and not the beta. Do you recommend that I use the beta? I have been enjoying the Apple App Store version so far and I'm looking forward to seeing how it will mature. I know that you guys are working hard, hats off to you all.

Autosave question?

Arctic Gorilla,
No, I never saw any dialog box about autosave. I wish I had though! Does anyone have a guess as to why autosave didn't work?
