  1. Affinity got a great potential to become a good, or even very good, illustration suite. I am spoiled by using ClipStudio and other software that got the tools I love that makes things more easy and quick. Line smoothing / stabilising like the one in ClipStudio and now also in SketchBook Pro. The new "Predictive Stroke makes life soo much easier while doing line art. As an example I did the "circle" on free hand with just one very quick stroke. Straight lines without guides is just as easy as using a ruler. I love that. SrPx; Still I believe fixing the brush system/display issues is more important for an illustrator... I don't understand that...? Can you explain?
  2. OK, they are, except the fact that Photo got Flood Fill and Gradient / bitmap fill... Still I think the bitmap fill leaves more to desire. That is one reason for me not to use Affinity software for bitmap fill. I have to switch to other illustration programs. In both Clip Studio and ArtRage I can add my repeating patterns with one click or by dropping the pattern tile into the selected area. The picture shows the tile that I made in AffD that I wanted to fill in a circle (to the left). No success in Affinity. In both Clip Studio and ArtRage the behavior was correct. Maybe I do not understand how Affinity works in this respect but I can not find any help file to learn...
  3. Here is another example of my filtering in AffP. It is a photo from Strasbourg (or was it Colmar ?) that I wanted to turn into a look of an old photo postcard. I had one as a reference and it was found here: Famgus. There are lots of inspiration for me to pick from that site.
  4. My interest in photography are old. Not as old as I am, but since I started with my own camera 1961, it is more than 60 years! I use a lot of filtering, mainly one app in my desktop computer, CameraBag Photo. A really great program. AffP is not the same, not as powerful for filtering, but can do things CameraBag can not. So I use them both. This is done all in Affinity Photo, no CameraBag support. I made it just to prove myself being capable to make (nearly) the same effects as in CB. Plus the ones CB cant make. I made it look like I wanted, like a memory from old days when I was a little boy. Nostagia of days gone by. A bit dreamy too, for me at least. Below is the original copy of the RAW out of camera. my photoblog is Foto och Filter
  5. OkiDoki! bleduc, I thank you for showing me around in Designer. I could not find that hidden pattern fill even after searching the F1 help... I was really was well hidden on the inside. In Designer the pattern fill iworks quite well, but not as well as I am used to as in Clip Studio or Painter. In Affinity Photo it is just no good, I have no use for that one. And about the lock transparent pixels in Affinity. It just does not work like in other software. I really suggest that is should, since it is a more time consuming and not so comfortable as in Photoshop, ClipStudio, Painter...and so on. Thanks for helping :)
  6. Line Smoothing and Weighted Stroke, both would be welcome, of course. Protect Alpha on individual layers works like masking, you don't have to turn on and off all the time, as you have to with a global protect alpha. In Clip Studio there is "Lock transparent pixels" on each individual layer as well ass masking each individual layers. Both are equal to me, but "Lock transparent pixels" is just one click away. Masking is two or three away. Better workflow using "Lock transparent pixels". A global Protect Alpha is no good from that point of view, it slows things down. Pattern Fill / Texture fill is just one click away in all the other graphic software I use. In ArtRage I click the fill tool, I can use Solid, Gradient or Pattern. If I choose Pattern I just locate my pattern / texture file, fill with desired scale and rotation. This can be done in Clip Studio and Painter too. Can it be done in AffD or AffP? I do not find that function. bleduc,Thank you for taking interest in my thougts and wishes.
  7. I am always carrying my mobile phone in my pocket on my morning walks. I live on the West Coast of Sweden, right on the shore, next to the salty water of Kattegatt. The storm (Urd december 25 and 26) turned out to be a real bad one with strong winds just below Hurricane. My house was surrounded by water for some hours, but no damage done, luckily. Only the poor rats and rabbits rabbits drowned as they crawled back into the ground when the storm raised. This morning the walk was along a shore, eroded and badly damaged by the water. The meadows along the shore were covered with all kinds of sea weeds. The frost had turned them into beautiful graphic objects, like this one. Tomorrow I will bring some other camera as I take my walk. I a m sure I will find some more great gfx objects... :) Have a great 2017 photo year!
  8. I would like to use Affinity Designer and Photo as my main tools for illustration I the future. I have already unsubscribed from Adobe CC and left the excellent Photoshop and Illustrator. Still there are some things that I like to see in Affinity Photo and Designer (Pixel Persona) to make them suite all my needs. I list them here: Protect Alpha on each separate layer. Just like masking separate layers. Protect alpha is quicker, but both methods are good in their own way. The “global” protect alpha is a bit odd. Never seen that before. Separate layers protect alpha, please! Free Rotate Canvas, not just 15o,15o, 15o….Photoshop got Free rotate canvas, Clip Studio got it, Painter got it, ArtRage got it…. so why not AffD and AffP? Line Smoothing. Just like in Clip Studio or Lazy Nezumi … makes line drawing very much more easy when u use bitmap lines. Pattern Creation tool for seamless patterns. I know you can make artboards to create them … it is a bit clumsy and takes some effort. I guess it is good for vector stuff, not so much for bitmaps, I think. In Corel Painter, it is very easy to make a seamless pattern or paper texture. It would be nice to see a tool like the one in Painter inside AffD and AffP in Pixel Persona. Pattern Fill / Texture fill. Not only colour or gradient fill but also, just like in Clip Studio, ArtRage, Painter and Photoshop, where you also can make scalable texture and pattern fills. Blue Sketch. Well, on importing a layer as reference or a graphite sketch it would be very convenient to make a Blue Sketch using just one click, just like in Clip Studio. I made a script for that, but an icon in the layer’s panel makes it quick and easy. This is all I come up with for the moment. I wish all fellow photographers and illustrators out there a fortunate 2017! The same for all the programmers and the rest in the Affinity / Serif team. You really have made some great software! Love from Henry On the WestCoast of Sweden
  9. I like Your illustration very much (nice texture overlay) and I can hear You singing it while illustrating... Glædelig jul og godt nytår!
  10. Thank you "retrograde" and "Aammppaa" for commenting on my hat, It was my first attempt to try out vectors + bitmap to see what was possible. It is just a test and it really looks "stiff" and a bit boring. Anyway, I was convinced that I can manage both Designer and Photo to make some good illustrations. The tools Affinity Designer and Photo adds to my designing arsenal are second to no other... So, I recently signed out of my Adobe CC subscription that I have had all since it was introduced. I don't really need it any more. Thank you Adobe, it has really been a pleasure to use all your software, I really mean it! :) I am moving on now - into the Affinity land...
  11. I started by using Designer to build the vector shapes of the hat, and filled the shapes with gradients. In Pixel persona I used texturizing brushes (from Frankentoon) for tinting and shading. Some additional lines, smooting and adding noise was done in AP as well as lighting. The seamless integration between the two programs makes me just love them...
  12. I am currently working on a re-design of a Childrens Storybook that I wrote 3 years ago and illustrated using Corel Painter. I will make it looking better and also re-write it in my own language. Some time next year I will publish it as a Android and iPad Storybook App with som interactivity, maybe some animation, sound fxs, atmospheric background sound, narration and such. It will be my second app, but my first (well, almost) done in Affinity Photo. And retrograde: I think this is the answer, but I will try to learn to love Designer..
  13. Thanks for commenting! I will try to get my vector work a bit further and I am trying to use only solid shapes (not relying on lines) and shading, tinting and texturing... I will check up your work on Behance and your site to get some inspiration... Steal like an artist, you know ;). Yes I like Designer, but I like Photo better because I am used to Photoshop... There is a seamless integration between them so I can open Designer files in Photo, and vice versa... that's totally great and very powerful!
  14. Freckles are cool! My wife gets them in the sun and my eldest daughter too. Pretty, very pretty.. :)
  15. Do you try to open Help from within Affinity Photo? I do it every time and there are absolutely no problems. I am also on Win 10 and also use Edge. The videos on Vimeo are easy to find and they are to find at this adress: https://vimeo.com/channels/875980 I do not find any differences in Win or Mac versions of AP in the videos. But maybe there are..?
  16. And why separate Win and Mac products? They look, act and perform the same on both platforms... or am I wrong about that?
  17. This is a interesting idea. Serif Photo and Draw had some animation tools. But I do not think it is something that should go in to Affinity Photo. There are some very good and cheap animation programs out there. Krita is very good on animation and it is completely free, no cost at all. ClipStudio EX has amazing animation tools, but you have to pay for it. SketchBook Pro "Flip Book" is OK and cheap. Photoshop is OK. The upcoming Animation Paper will probably be something special... I am keeping an eye on it for the beta release next year. It will be low price and a heavy duty animation software. TVPaint. What can I say? The best? The most expensive? at least I can not afford it. I use Spine (sometimes Moho) for my animation, making my graphics in whatever software as long as I save it out as *.PSD. Affinity Photo makes it possible to export scripts for Spine to easy set up graphics. Spine + Affinity Photo = true love. I have to try the same in Affinity Designer too. I have just unscribed my Adobe CC and I am leaving Photoshop and Lightroom. I don't need them anymore. I go for Affinity al along now! Keep on animating :)
  18. I am not very fond of vectors, but had to try it out to test Designer, that will (probably) be one of my main design programs from now on. Still, I will keep to bitmaps most of the time. Here is my very first, simple, but still, all vector drawn, illustration.
  19. In ClipStudio Paint, in ArtRage, in SketchBook Pro, In Photoshop you find the function of filling all layers below the ink layer. If you are in the line art illustration habit, flood filling flat colours on by one on separate layers, afterwords adding tints and shades and some texture, Flood Fill on underlying layers is a must. The line art remains untouched, the colour layers can be masked and evryting gets so easy and fast. I miss this workflow and feature in Affinity Photo and Designer. I really like Affinity Photo as a painting / illustrating program. My suggestion is: add this feature. It will be one more reason to switch over from Photoshop (or any other program)...
  20. Since I use Windows Scetchbook Pro I am very fond of not having a keyboard attached to the screen I am painting on. Screen on icons for undo / redo are present in SketchBook Pro and also in ClipStudio Paint and ArtRage. There are third party add-ons to make screen painting easier using keyboard shortcuts, like RadialMenu, AristPad and ArtPad, for the Win10 tablets. Soon the Surface Dial will arrive...it will help a lot for programs with no Undo / Redo icons. Since Surface Pro runs full software like Photoshop, ClipStudio, Affinity Photo and others, there are sometimes no switch to run in a tablet mode. Photoshop got it and Painter got it. Many other software are hopeless to work with on a tablet. Affinity is OK. But just OK. SketchBook Pro and ArtRage on iPad and other iOS paint programs has the same icons for Undo and Redo. If there were Undo / Redo icons in Designer and Photo I would really welcome it as a Surface Pro artist! (Picture showing the icons in SketchBook Pro, a well designed software to use on both my Surface Pro and on my iPad...)
  21. In Windows I right click the image I want from internet an copy, and than paste it in Designer by "File Drop" :) You can do it the complicated way in Window too, if you like...
  22. Hi John, I think you have to do like this: Go to the Menu / View / Studio / Macro. Find the little arrow in the right corner of the pop-up that says "Import". That opens up the macro BlueSketch if you have unzipped it and you know where ;) to find the unzipped file with the file ending *.afmacro. Now select the third from right little icon that reads "Add to the library" and that saves the macro in the right place (file ending *.afmacros). Next time you open the Library it is supposed to show up there.
  23. I am just a retired oldie and I do most of my pieces for the fun of it. But, I am in the app-making thing after retirement (2 years ago). Done one app so far called Gustaf, and I am in process of making more. Got illustrations done for 2 more. I am the Graphic Designer doing stills and animations. The programming stuff is done by my son (he is a professional app-maker and programmer) and he is also the sound designer. I am also freelance illustrating for an education publishing house. But most of the time I write my stories, illustrate them and I will publish some if I am lucky. Thank you for asking! Kodiak and MEB, you make me happy writing such things! :D @Paolo.Limoncelli. By the way, I use Affinity Photo for this piece and your brushes only! This painting is about the girl from Syracusa, Saint Lucia. We celebrate her here in Sweden on the 13 of December. She comes walking in the dark with lights in her hair and a red ribbon round her waist. She sings her songs about bringing light to the world together with her (also white dressed) maids. The mass is televised from my home town Varberg this year!
