  1. 'this is just a curves adjustment tool for ansel adams fans' Are you confident in what you've stated here MBd? The zone mapper tool is quite versatile and IMO a lot more efficient than using curves. In fact I'd be hard pushed getting results from curves compared to the zone mapper! With this tool one can lock off tonalities (zones) then expand (or contract) narrow bands of tones... rather clever, and very simple if one has a working knowledge of the zone system. I won't go into the depths of zone system tonal/texture control here except to say the zone mapper is based on the original 10 zones Ansel (and Fred Archer) pioneered (and later abandoned to 11 — fortunately the 10 zones were kept alive by Fred Picker and others}. The panel drops out zone 0 (pure black) and zone IX (pure white) therefore retaining 8 zones broken into half steps (stops) — 16 tonal steps in total. The versatility within these 16 steps offers tonality/texture control IMO much greater than curves offered currently with other image editors. The only other editor I'm aware of that comes close is ACDSee's Ultimate (current version 10) - their LIght EQ does pretty much the same... but, of course geared up for the digital photographer who may or may not have an understanding of zone systems...or anything to do with the alchemy of the golden days of silver and smelly chemicals :) Exposing to the right is ...well, ok. Recognition of tonalities and exposing for is, well, more desirable — and I'm not talking about full tonal range images. I constantly drop tones from my abstract style images. ;)
  2. ...Been there! HaHa! My bad. In this situation though I'm not the client—just another designer offering suggestions but not wanting to preach nor step on sincetimebegan's toes so to speak :) Edit: Have changed to 'whatever! You have the brief...' :)
  3. I quite like this—nice idea. Real food to me means 'alive' food as compared to 'dead' food ie take-a-way fast food chains. How would the logo look if there was a sense of aliveness hinted at within the design? ie steam rising above the spoon (cleverly done of course), some sort of movement in the typography or spoon...whatever! You have the brief... I had a look at your web site and on the about page (to contact you) and anywhere else there's no contact name. If I was a potential client I'd be a bit hesitant without knowing whom I'm emailing.
  4. Did you use a new layer above set to colour blend mode? The results are quite impressive!
  5. Very, very nice work Keith. The juxtapositioning of the Turnstone and the chains, the colour interplay between the Reed Bunting and the background ...and that perfect timing with the 2nd Gannet sighting its prey. Brilliant!
  6. I did all my testing with fresh non cached DNGs. With cached DNGs the time drops down to about 8 secs. It does seem to be an issue with Pentax DNGs (?). My Canon CR2s (from 2012 and earlier) load into AP in 6 secs (ie fresh non cached).
  7. Yes, I can confirm Pentax DNG files are slow to load in AP compared to other apps. My Pentax is APS-C with DNGs between 16 and 19 MB in size. With all things being equal - that is loading the files from File / Open I can open DNGs in Photoshop CS6 in less than 2 sec (ie opening in Camera Raw via PS File / Open) while the same files take 12 sec in AP. Timings are from a smartphone stopwatch app. I'm using a fairly high spec laptop (ASUS ROG) and have tested only with the current AP retail (v1.5.0.45).
  8. I was curious when I read the term 'pixel density' as I've not heard/read that before. Here's Wikipedia's take https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_density
  9. Errr, Getting back on topic - I don't have an issue with the UI. I just lifted the pasteboard density, that's all.
  10. I wasn't suggesting the OP has terminology confusion. His examples clearly show the difference between AP and PS RAW with the shadows pulled 100% in both
  11. As the topic heading is 'Pulling Shadows' then assumably that's what the OP wants to do - pull the shadows (ie lighten them to bring back detail) not darken them (ie pushing). It looks like to me going by the posts above there's confusion with terminology.
  12. Yes, I can confirm the OP. I've brought a number of images into AP RAW (before this post) and there's been no issue however after reading the OP's post I explored with greater variable subject RAW's (including underexposed files) and indeed there's an issue...
  13. I'd go along with that Mike. All things being equal (so to speak) I found AP and Photoshop CS6 gives the same readout whereas ACDSee Ultimate 9 is the odd one out... ...using this excellent freeware colour picker for measuring http://annystudio.com/software/colorpicker/
  14. Back in March 2013 Apple, Adobe and Microsoft appeared before an Australian federal parliamentary committee hearing into the pricing of their products in Australia. The investigation was set up following a long campaign by Labor backbencher Ed Husic, who had accused some information technology companies of "ripping off" Australian consumers. Apple's spokesperson Tony King defended his company's Australian prices and responded "Price considerations must go well beyond simply looking up a currency exchange rate," he said. "For example, Apple must consider differences between countries in product costs, freight charges, local sales taxes, levies, import duties, channel economics, competition and local laws regarding advertised prices." http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-03-22/apple-microsoft-grilled-over-high-prices/4587900 I'm not at all knocking Serif. They are, quite fairly, charging Windows OS users the same price as Apple users are charged through MAS as pointed out by you Alfred. Considering Tony King's pathetic defence Apple just gets on with the business of, no doubt, fleecing most countries outside of the USA with their creative exchange rate.
  15. For sure. Typesetters idealise other shapes ...I'm currently working my way through 'A History Of Writing' ISBN 9782080108876 ;)
  16. Apple prices! Enough said :D My ASUS ROG 17.3" laptop cost me about a third less than a MacBook pro 15." and with about three times the grunt! (power) hee, hee,
  17. Whoa, you may want to rethink that.. AD is top of the class in what it can do and of course there's a lot more coming however; At present there's no mesh and blend tools, no trace and no shape builder tools. All these are primary tools for current professional graphic design (jury may be out on trace?). Someone will correct me here no doubt however Designer (going by the splash screen examples one can download) the primary app development was for illustration over graphic design layout...
  18. I have no issues with the price I paid for AD (it's a bargain compared to other software) however there's inconsistencies across currencies... I'm in Australia (obviously!) but my email to purchase was in euros - EUR 39.99. Converted it cost me AUD$62.99. However the online currency converter XE at the same time gives me... US - 39.99 = AUD$54.52 EUR - 39.99 = AUD$57.74 and.. GBP 29.99 = AUD$50.46 Perhaps Serif's marketing team need to sort this out and (ideally!) use one currency only for pricing?
  19. Love it! (with reservation). To my eyes the clouds/sky is flat so if this was my image I'd be looking at boosting the contrast, tonality, strength of this area. Nevertheless it's a clever concept!
  20. I'm not sure as yet due to my very limited experience with AP but it does seem to be driving the GPU harder than my other graphic apps. That is the fans are running fast for even low intensity burning and dodging, all things being equal that's not happening with PS for example. I don't game btw. I decided back in 2014 to replace my i3 laptop after realising watching spinning balls was not a healthy way to experience life ;)
  21. SSD + 16GB ram. (2 hd drives installed - 1 SSD. Both are swappable). https://www.asus.com/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-G750JS/
  22. I guess .dng are exempt (?) All my .dng (Pentax) are loading in a max of 5 secs
  23. The slowness is quite likely to be hardware related (?). I can load a 390MB 4 layer .psd file into AP in 6 secs (from File/Open). That same image opens in its native Photoshop just half a sec quicker. (Timed with a smartphone stopwatch app). I'm on an Asus ROG G750JS i7 laptop (2014 model). I've only had a couple of hours play with AP so far ...it rocks! :)
  24. 'the vocabulary below means “film” (that you use for taking photos in old cameras), Cantonese and Mandarin speakers not only say it in different ways in different wordings, they also write them in different characters' (copied and pasted from the web page the image came from).
  25. Thanks. That's clear now re 'Or am I missing something here'. My brain (logic?) was telling me if I was typing more graphic inclined non Roman characters I shouldn't expect font flavours. In other words Chinese (Mandarin) characters in Didot, Eurostyle or perhaps Caslon? :D
