SrPx reacted to Renzatic in Affinity products for Linux
They're wanting to leverage the cloud for enterprise solutions, home office applications, and storage, which they've more or less already done, and are making a mint off of it.
Turning Windows itself into a sub based service would be incredibly stupid for a number of reasons. For one thing, it'd basically be Microsoft charging people what'll amount to a pointless middleman fee just to access their own paid services. It'd not only be an ongoing self imposed obstacle barring the way to their own line of products, but would be double dipping into their customer's wallets in the worst, most obviously greedy way. I doubt a majority of their user base would tolerate it, especially when there are so many compelling alternatives to choose in lieu of.

Eh, I severely doubt MS will attach Windows to a subscription model. It's one thing to charge a monthly fee to allow access to a piece of software designed to address a specific purpose, another thing entirely to charge people for basically the right to use their own computer. There's only so much people are willing to tolerate, and I'm sure MS is well aware of the fine line that separates Office365 from Windows.

Welcome to the Serif affinity forums and thanks for your thoughtful contributions. Just for clarity, Linux is not a part of our 1.x development plans, but we are not saying "never".

I'll just reiterate right fast that if the Affinity suite were to come to Linux, I'd buy them.
...and I've already bought all three previously. Two of them at full price. This makes me super important, and my opinion extra valuable.

SrPx reacted to Pšenda in Ability to export icon files (*.ico) in Designer
Yes, but *.ico with icons of different sizes is of course always better (saving the page/link and viewing it in the OS, ...).
-
SrPx reacted to Wosven in Ability to export icon files (*.ico) in Designer
I suppose CMS automatically search for an .ico file in the root folder, but like you I used .png since it's easy to generate (I can't remember if it just needed specific name like favicon.png), and if the CMS just ask to provide a file on the server or the HD.
For example, Plone only need a favicon.png file in the root folder.

SrPx reacted to Pycorax in Ability to export icon files (*.ico) in Designer
Honestly, I'm not too sure myself, I'm not a web developer. I'm just a C# developer using some doc generation tools and they insist on using an ico file.

Ehm... back in my web dev/design days you could make the favicon be a PNG... has it changed?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
I am sorry that you feel ripped off.If you have just bought the software there is a moneyback guarantee, but We think the software is an excellent professional design tool, albeit one that doesn't have this function

Please don't. It would be very nice if this conversation remained focused on the original topic.

SrPx reacted to Snapseed in Affinity products for Linux
I fully agree with you and the Serif staff have been quite adamant that there is not going to be a Linux version of their softwares because it's just not economical to do that. Despite that, the whining goes on and it will achieve absolutely nothing.
These days, I mostly use native Linux Nomacs and Pixeluvo (= Photoshop Elements equivalent) and there are now quite a few other image/photo editors available for Linux both in and outside of the formal software centres. Some of that software is actually Windows software that's been bundled with Wine to make a Snap (Photoscape, Irfanview, etc).
If anyone wants even more choice than that, there are versions of Photoshop and Paintshop Pro that work well with Wine (see Wine HQ at winehq{dot}org) and the developers of PhotoLine (like Fotoxx, that software ought to be more widely known about) go out of their way to ensure that their software works well Wine so that Linux users are not unduly disadvantaged. Then there are the numerous online image editors to use as well.
Finally, and just for the record, I am a full time Linux user:

There is a large number of countries in which 80 per month is a ton of money...despite that, full of great designers, illustrators and 3D artists... For them, 80 bucks per month is literally impossible, full stop. Many can't even receive payments from foreign countries. And also, I've known really good pros in the very lucky (and selfish) first world not making such money as for after paying all bills, 80 a month being irrelevant (actually quite damaging for some); it all often does not work that way. Software renting is a way of the dodo for the freelancer, in general. If not, look at Autodesk 3DS Max "tiny" monthly lil bite.... 270 euros (291 $, tho I guess in the us is all cheaper) each month (and nothing tells us how and till where it could escalate in the CC)... If for some disgrace he/she also needs to have a Maya license (ie, animation workflows in maya, objects and scenery in Max, for whatever the workflow with several different freelancing customers, or even a same game studio outsourcing), that's plus another 270 per month... Yay! Wohoo... around 600$ per month (surely they'll need the 80 bucks of Adobe, then 680$/month...for the average freelancer...not the lucky one who knows someone that knows someone), ...so now we can call ourselves "professionals"? ...Ain't we cool? Not like those non professional losers that earn just like us, or more, with Blender, doing architectural renders, intros, VFX or whatever. Poor noobs.. Now, if one would be to tell me EVERY 3D artist earns a ton of money "and huh, they should be able to afford it, or their business model is wrong..", nah, not the case, and I know a bunch, quite good ones. Also, design software is not only for the 9 to 5 employee or the lucky freelancer. There are also hobbyists, more casual freelancers, etc, while many of them are a lot more skilled, talented and inspired than a number of established "pros"... But they don't have same luck or contacts, despite quite a bunch of them being clearly better. No way that the fact of the 80$ month "tax" being a PITA that adds on top of everything (and due to some adoring this renting boomerang like sheep) for them would be a factor to determine how pro or good are them or their business, there are many more factors... And "if you are not making 5k a month, get another job/business", wouldn't be a correct/nice suggestion to make, all things considered, imo.
But nope, Adobe software is not falling apart. Loosing a big number of customers of certain type: I have no doubt about that. Do they care? probably not much... But Intel did not care for a while about users fleeing to AMD... Now they do.
Edit: This is not defending the idea of making Linux ports of Affinity, though.

SrPx reacted to IanSG in Affinity for Linux
I use both.
TANSTAAFL = There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. If Serif port their products to another platform it will inevitably have an impact on things I care about much more than just being able to to run them on a new platform - a DAM, regular updates, timely support, low cost etc. That's the price I'm concerned about.

SrPx reacted to ehigiepaul in Affinity Video Editor?
True. i use davinci resolve , it has everything i need for post production. Audio editing still need some work , i do a round trip to studio one and back. but am cool with the software.
Affinity Video editor will be nice still but i dont feel affinity have any plans for it and alot of work when it comes to video processing.
For now the vector and pixel space Affinity has covered it well but still need more works.
I hope to see prototyping in designer and more

SrPx reacted to Pšenda in Ability to export icon files (*.ico) in Designer
Sorry, but the usability of this feature would be minimal. The purpose of the *.ico file is that it is a container for different sizes of a single icon, which are used for different situations and needs in the OS.

Hi,
Another one, featuring the same look-and-feel of my previous post. As the eye is always the main element, I thought of naming this one as the 1000 eyes of Doctor Mabuse – as in the Fritz Lang's movie.
It's not as rich as the first one but I do like the depth of the layers I got with the radial elements.
Great and perfect

SrPx reacted to v_kyr in Designer & Trace Tool?
One have to take some third party tool for tracing here, like for example:
potrace (win + mac, free) DragPotrace (mac GUI frontend to potrace, free) autotrace (win + mac, free) Inkscape (win + mac, free) MS Expression Design 4 (win, nowadays free) Super Vectorizer (mac) Image Vectorizer (mac) Vector Magic (win + mac) Intaglio Vectorize (mac, free) Image Vectorizer (online tool, free) Autotracer (online tool, free) Vectorize Raster Images Online (online Photopea, free) ...and so on... -

SrPx reacted to Wosven in Jonas and the Whale
Hi,
Entirely made with vectors in AD.
I usually don't draw with vectire, since if find it more time consuming that what I would have done when using brushes and paint.
It's not what I would have usually done, but I thought it was done in a modern way, like some Middle Age art can be, and I'm fond of this era. And it seems easy.
The fun part is that I kept the more difficult, the writing on the scroll for the end, since it appears the more difficult, and it wasn't until I begin to read the text that I understand that it was in French and certainly some contemporary art! I wish I could have use such a detailed version — or the original document—instead of the low resolution one I had to use in a document at work (no time to draw it before printing, alas!).
Original:
It seems I can't upload larger files.

SrPx reacted to VectorVonDoom in Porsche 917K Daytona Winner (AD)
My main complicated drawings are taking ages so I thought I would work on a few easier ones at the same time. This is the first to be finished.
For me Gulf Racing is the most iconic colour scheme in motor racing and I’ve been meaning to do a 917 but never got around to it until now. Unsurprisingly there aren’t a whole lot of overhead shots of it so this was based on photos of the 1:8 scale die cast model by Amalgam Collection. Very high end, about £10k but bespoke can apparently cost up to £120k. Not something to let the kids play with.
On the Porsche 917K’s public debut at the 1970 Daytona 24 Hours, John Wyer's Gulf-sponsored team finished 1-2 in the race. The winning number 2 car driven by Pedro Rodríguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman broke the distance record by 190 miles.

SrPx reacted to dannyg9 in Skin Art Magazine 174
Not here for a critique as these are done and in the process of publication. Rather, it's an announcement of triumph in that this is the first large scale piece (100 pages) I created entirely in Publisher, with assists from Designer and a big BIG shout out to Photo. I've been Art Directing/designing this magazine for over 3 years and this is the first "Adobe free" issue and going forward, that will be the order of the day. I never wanted to and never did buy into the Creative Cloud (well, you don't buy, you just rent for the rest of your life).
There's still a few features that I'm sure will be added as Publisher grows but there's nothing that couldn't be worked around with ease (span columns - this is covered in other parts of the forum).
In dealing with the printer, the only glitch was the cover file. In the end I think it was the printer's automated system and I'm awaiting the technician's report as to why the cover was rejected (multiple times as I tried various solutions). While the system initially rejected each upload of the Cover file page, the printer was able to override the system, open the file, check the metadata, and insert the file into the system. I'll follow up once I receive the report.
Thank you so much Affinity for all three programs. What a relief to reach the end of the project and it worked beyond expectations. The "proof in the pudding" was the final export of the PDF files without any problems, minus the unknown of the Cover. I'd like to point out that the cover successfully exported from Publisher each time. Whatever is lurking in the file wasn't anything so significant that the printer couldn't overcome. I also want to point out that this is the first time they received a job created in Affinity Publisher.

SrPx reacted to Smee Again in Hatchlings . . .
Back in March, I had to "tie up" my car's muffler after one of the mounts broke. I grabbed some bailing wire that one of our autoshop guys had used to hold a door open on windy days. Didn't realize it at the time, but there was a Preying Mantis egg on one end. When I got the new mount and attached it, I was about to dispose of the wire when I realized there was an egg on it. My wife wanted to put it in our garden. I figured it was damaged after all the heat coming off the tail pipe. That was in March 2020.
Today, while I was in a Zoom meeting, she came into my room all excited and showing me pictures of her Preying Mantises that were hatching. As soon as my meeting was over, I grabbed the camera and took a look. Here's a couple of pics I got while she was "making groceries" (Cajun term for "buying foodstuffs").
Appears they are coming out one or two at a time. In second picture you can see some little heads that have broken through the shell but haven't exited yet.
