Hello, I'm Tony Dawes and I've been using Serif products on Windows for years. Mainly Photo Plus, Page Plus and occasionally Web Plus. I also have Movie Plus but that hasn't been updated in years, and Draw Plus which I rarely use. Just installed Affinity Photo and it looks good enough to cancel my Photoshop CC subscription.

Hello. My name is Teran Mitchell and I am a practicing architect in Virginia, USA. I, too, have been looking for viable alternatives to the Adobe subscription services. I just stumbled upon Affinity Photo today and like what I have seen and read. My transition away from the exorbitant prices of Adobe will be complete when Serif Publisher is released.

Thank you, Serif, for providing a solid product at a reasonable price!

Yeah using programs once installed is pretty straight forward but getting some programs installed can be a big headache.  Its nowhere near just click and install.

Anyone considering using Linux needs to walk into it knowing it's not for the faint of heart. If your someone who doesn't care to know about how the OS works but just wants it to run your software then Linux is going to be a huge nightmare for you.  You will need to know the OS and how the various components all work together. You will need to learn some basic programing skills and command line instructions to install software.  Software comes in various extensions which require knowledge of installers and command line instructions to get them into Linux.

I have been playing around with Linux Mint for a few years now and I have software I have downloaded on my computer that to this day I still haven't figured out how to install. Most people who use Linux possess a high degree of technical knowledge and a good grasp of the UNIX framework.

    Hi abphoto,
The reason we made these changes was to allow us to use input points direct from the tablet driver, instead of through the Windows mouse API. The benefits of this approach are:

    1. Increased input point precision, independent of screen resolution and zoom level.
    2. Increased input point frequency (especially under load), resulting in smoother lines.

We are reverting this feature because to make it work reliably, more extensive changes are needed, which we have decided are unsuitable for a minor patch.
The feature will hopefully appear in 1.6.

    Hi RanzQ,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
We have implemented line stabilisation in the latest 1.6 Beta which you can download from the pined thread in respective Beta section here in case you want to give them a try.
Select the brush (Pencil, Vector Brush and Paint Brush Tools in Designer and Paint Brush Tool in Photo) you want to use and look for the stabilisation controls in the context toolbar.

Congrats to Matt Priestley, Andy Tang, and Tony Brightman. I know a teensy bit about bit planes and color planes and all the other registers in what used to be video cards, the EGA cards with the infamous "overflow register" and write-only set. I gave up at that write-only point, my hobby came to screeching halt. I sadly never even learned how to put a pixel on a screen. Have not gone back in to look at anything beyond the 8086, but looking at results in your program, just clicking UI buttons, I find myself saying things like "Perfect! Astounding .... Fantastic! Just spectacular!"

Just if anyone feels like answering a probably pretty dumb question, in making pixel differentiation, you use an algorithm (or set of them) that sets +/- number boundaries for the register content (e.g. gray within 16 bits +/- [edit: I mean, 16 bits as in hex F]), and then averages those across registers to make a differentiation? I'm just curious, because at times using the selection tool I notice a cloud background selected (big jump selection) along with a green leaf that has a green-tinged spot of reflected light, and wonder if that happens because the grey and intensity (or other non-color) registers carry more weight in the algorithm than the color. Not complaining - I've doped out how to decrease the brush size and/or deselect the cloud area to get it to snap to the leaf edge (and use a bit of blur).

Thanks for your program, btw. The interface is just right for my tastes, very unobtrusive, and the function is amazing.

Hi. I'm Rob. Getting back into "hobby" photography after a 10 year sojourn pointing and clicking with phones etc. Previously I was a film SLR user. Steep learning curve! Now photography is digital it seems much can be achieved with post processing. I really don't like the idea of a subscription model so am wary of Adobe. Serif Affinity Photo seems like a good possibility, and I like to support local industry where possible. (I'm from Nottingham). So I had a free trial, purchased and have been watching tutorial videos and having a go. It seems to have lots of high end features. I may need to upgrade my (Windows) hardware. I think I also want a DAM-type product to help in viewing, selecting, storing and cataloguing "keepers". Looks like that needs to be a separate product. Looking forward to getting to grips with Affinity Photo, not as an end in itself but to improve my renditions.

    Hi, I'm Tony

Spent 30 years in the printing pre-press and graphic arts trade. Using all sorts of stuff like Photoshop (started with version 3) and loads of plugins over the years. Retired now but like to keep my hand in.

I am very impressed with Affinity Photo although the lack of decent documentation is (or was) a big minus. It was initially very difficult to migrate from Photoshop because I was admittedly a bit stuck in my ways and Affinity does thing differently or calls things by different names making the help file search option useless.

Having to spend hours watching videos or looking for non-existent help in the help files is such a waste of time. I watched just about every video, read through the help files but still only learned a fraction of what I could easily do in Photoshop. I then spent hours going through the menus and basically just playing until I figured most of it out. I could not have, and would not have done that in a professional environment. Time is money!

Funny thing is, Affinity Photo does many things so much better, but you have to look really hard for the necessary techniques or approach things in different ways.

I hope Affinity Photo is a success. It had an incredible range of features without suffering the Adobe bloat, or the Adobe cost.

    RE: "This beta has expired"

Sorry, but from our tests it would appear that the current installer only works IF YOU HAD ALREADY HAD A BETA INSTALLED. Unfortunately if you are on a machine that has not had an Affinity Photo Customer Beta installed, then this current beta reports that your beta has expired when you try to run it.

We will make a new installer that will work whether you have had a customer beta before or not. We will make this replacement 1.6 beta installer available as soon as possible.

Install the previous version of Affinity photo customer beta first .
Then install and replace with the new version of Affinity photo customer beta 1.6.0.70
This way works for me .

Affinity Photo 1.6.0.70 (beta) installed OK and launches correctly for me, but I had uninstalled the last 1.5.x beta manually beforehand.

The second panel in the Welcome slider says "What's new in Affinity Photo 1.5". The third panel also refers to (and links to) tutorials for the new features in 1.5, but I'm guessing that this is intentional since the current 1.6 release is only a beta.

Click here to download the latest beta
    Status: Customer Beta
    Purpose: New features
Requirements: A valid product key, issued when Windows Affinity Photo version 1.5 was purchased.

This is the first beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.

We hope you enjoy the latest build, and as always, if you've got any problems, please don't hesitate to post here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks once again for your continued feedback.

If you have a general question about the software, please head over to the Questions Forum, or if you have any suggestions, please head over to the Feature Requests forum.

    Fixes
First and foremost, the 1.6 version is mainly about: Light UI! (go to Preferences->User Interface) Improved view pan/zoom performance and new pixel-differencing pixel shader Improved performance with large documents New font chooser dropdown with recents, used fonts and favourites (Not available in Windows version yet) New Glyph browser Stroke stabiliser for all pencil and brush tools Align to key items (first/last selected) Text frame vertical alignment options Fit frame to text (double-click on bottom centre handle). Transform panel uses the rotation centre (Not available in Windows version yet)  Scale/shear can now be performed about rotation centre (Not available in Windows version yet)  Double-click now resets shape handles and rotate/shear handles Many PDF export improvements including vector export of multi-stop gradients Numerous bug fixes and stability improvements

As you probably realise, there is no 1.6 Windows beta yet, but once it exists the 1.6.0.xx installer will uninstall 1.5.2.69 automatically for you (I strongly expect), so yes install 1.6.0.nn beta over 1.5.2.69 beta. However you can uninstall the beta yourself if you want to.

TJ McCormick. I have used Affinity since 2015, for a variety of web, business card, and meme creations. I have used the Adobe suite since the late 80s, and decided not to get on the subscription treadmill. Affinity does a lot of the things I need, and with the UI download, it will help me create awesome websites for www.bt-video.com and www.seawindfilms.com, my two business endeavors. For the price, I think it's one of the best investments a graphic designer can make, and I look forward to purchasing it for my PC, since I have used the Mac version all along, and I am moving away from MacOS.  ;)
