No, it's not possible to hide the handles (nodes).

Have you tried to use the Paint Brush Tool with a small width in Pixel Persona instead?

 

… just a follow-up to say that the Paint Brush Tool in Pixel Persona is perfect. That's the methodology I should have been using from the outset for my particular purpose.

Is there a way of hiding handles when using the pencil tool? I use the tool a lot for annotating scanned pdfs which I place onto a locked layer and then "write" on top.
