Just wondering if there's been any progress towards this? If not, I hope writing this can bring some more visibility.

On top of my comments in the initial post, the current default being Whole document can be very sluggish when dealing with big files... As my intention has never been to export a whole document, you can imagine how frustrating it can be to be hindered by something that's of no use to me.

If it's the "remembering" functionality that's holding this back from being implemented, can you perhaps just default to Selection without background if something is actually selected, and Whole document if nothing is selected? Or, if you don't like that idea, can you at least add the option for users to choose their own default? I can't imagine there would be many moving pieces affected by the latter...

Can you please add the functionality to remember the last "area" settings used on the export panel? 3/4 of the time I'm going to be using the "selection without background" setting, and it's a pain to have to select that option each time I export something new.

P.S. For whatever's sake please stop challenging the premise. People need it and it should be there. Of course they know they can copy-paste, and they "could have created it right in the first place". Such comments are simply non-empathetic. At least from the data model pov it should be there – your application has two types for same commodity of data, then it would only be beneficial for the users to allow converting between them. That's it.
P.P.S As a long time avid CorelDraw user (before they 'effed up their multi-platform licensing) who could never fully like Illustrator, Affinity is a breath of fresh air. Just few nudges here and there and it'd be a perfect replacement for both.

You have to set the Fill mode to Alternate (go to menu Layer ▸ Fill Mode ▸ Alternate after performing the boolean operation or alternatively set the bottom shape Fill layer mode to Alternate before performing the boolean operation).

Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo
Monochrome icons don't working after update 1.9.  Nothing happens after choosing checkbox. Its not depends of a mac model, i have more than 6 macs (iMacs and MacBooks Pro) and the same problem on each one. It was great to work with monochrome icons, but now its impossible. Tried to delete and reinstall affinity but nothing helps. Any solutions ?

Welcome to Affinity Forums
The default units depend on the type of document you chose when you create it. Currently there's no way to set new defaults for these types of documents.
If you want to change the overall document units select the View Tool (the hand icon) go to the context toolbar and select the units you want to use from the Units dropdown.
If you want to change the units for the lines/shapes stroke's width go to Affinity Designer/Photo Preferences, User Interface section and untick Show lines in points.
 
One thing you can do however is set up a customised document as you wish save it somewhere on your computer and use it as a template.

Sometimes I lay down some text with artistic text because I don't like to have to stretch a box first. I just lay it down to see how it looks as one line. Then if I decide it's too long and I would like to wrap it, I would really REALLY like the ability to covert to text frame so I can start adjusting the wrap. Seems like that case wouldn't be difficult.

Select all the objects (or group) you want to resize then use the lower bottom right corner handle (the one that's detached from the bounding box) to scale all the objects - including text frames. If you need to enlarge them to a specific size/width place a guide in the document as reference, then use snapping to help you resize the bounding box exactly to that guide. You can't use the Transform panel to set the dimensions directly because the text frames will reflow instead of being scaled.

maybe I'm missing it, but is there an option to open a JPEG, or bitmap image
and trace,or convert it to a vector file for further editing? If not there should be one, it would be a great option. even if it had only a few modes like black and white, and 5 color
it would make me convince me to convert from adobe illustrator
