Weekend fun character painting. Hope someone likes it. Really quite amazed at the versatility of the old classic smudge as a real painting tool.

Hello fellow Affinity aficionados, in continuing my scooter series for Redbubble, here is my second retro styled scooter/travel poster. This time a Lambretta featuring a young couple scootering about Paris in the fall.

    All done in Designer 1.6

Check it out on my Redbubble site as well.

Yes illustrators spiral "shape" is pretty basic with no way to adjust it other than size.

I imagine an Affinity Designer spiral would have some options to control size, space in between lines, flip, start and end points etc...

Well give yourself a pat on the back, successful realism aside it's a feat in itself just completing something of this scope. Kudos from me.

Would love to see a layer of subtle colour below the black as an option... maybe as a series of semi transparent washes.

Not being a programmer, but this one would seem to be an easy/quick fix... no?

A brush icon remains highlighted until another brush icon gets clicked... the same way the layers panel works now would be perfect. Initially the layer is bright than fades somewhat but still remains highlighted.

Weird thing is the brush panel seems to work in draw persona but not in pixel persona. Hmmm...

I sure wished the brushes stayed selected in the brush panel or rather highlighted. As soon as you click onto your document it goes away... and you have to guess which brush you're using.

... also it would be great if the brushes in Designer behaved like Photo in that they know which brush tool (pixel tool or paint brush tool) to use and enact the right one automatically. Photo seems to do this correctly. Currently it doesn't know so you have to go up to that tool icon and click it, then it jumps to the last brush you were using with that tool so you have to reselect the brush you want in the brush panel. Frustrating!!

It's these little things that would truly make a difference in your workflow...

I don't think it's a bug, but something that may have accidentally been left out. There are some minor features not implemented in both operating systems. That might be one of them. I'm a Mac user too, and I don't have that option available either.

How do you drag a fav brush into a new "favs" category?

EDIT: I just found it! There is a "move brush to category" feature as a right click menu option. If you right click on the brush you want to move. This is awesome. Beware though as it does move the brush, not copying it. So it will remove it from it's original brush set. Maybe the addition of a "copy brush to category" would make a nice addition and give users a choice so they can have favs without breaking up the original brush set.

Users need some sort of simple way to organize and save favourite brushes in their own panel. There are now hundreds of brushes, all in separate panels. It's becoming counter productive and I think some sort of system is needed to get the most out of all of these great resources.

Also beware that you don't delete a brush or category, because those don't come back. I learned this the hard way.

retrograde reacted to Hokusai in Art Nouveau Absinthe
I have been wanting to do my own version of an Art Nouveau piece for awhile and I just happen to come across an old poster that was originally created by Henri Privat-Livemont and I thought it would be a good one to recreate with vectors using Designer. I added quite a bit more shading and some other minor things here and there. I normally don't use any effects in my work as I prefer to keep things purely vector but with this one I used two effects to help soften the colours on the face. The effects can easily be removed and it doesn't take away from the picture much but in the end I decided that it looked better with the effects. I've also included a view of the outlines that were used.

retrograde got a reaction from Dave Vector in Quick flip for stroke pressure profile direction
Lots of times when I break a curve then play with the stroke pressure profile to widen or shrink the stroke widths... it would be super cool to have a quick flip feature to just switch the profile width direction, instead of doing it manually. Currently we have a "save profile" and "reset" button and there is still room in the centre for a "flip" button or the even repurposing the existing icon from the tool shelf could work here, see attached. :-)
