  1. Hi MEB, thanks, yes I did that and it does create a new layer but to take it further what if AD see's that you have one or more layers selected and offers an additional option in the right click menu to create the new layer and move (new layer and move) the selected layers into it with the layer name highlighted ready for a new name?

It's these kinds of workflow tweaks that will win over users, I think.

    Smart, anticipated features. :)

  2. Is there currently a way to select a bunch of layers/objects and collect them all into a new layer with all of those selected layers/objects nested inside or underneath the new layer?

I very often find that I want to organize projects as they get unwieldily and if I could select a bunch of layers, right click or hit a button/menu that could move all of those selections into a new folder for easy naming that would be so handy.

Does this ability exist now and I haven't found it?

    Cheers.

  3. Hi retrograde,

No new information on this at the moment, it's still with the developers to look into, hopefully one of them will see this post and provide an update.

Thanks Lee, would love to see it addressed after 1.5 is out. This and the expand strokes issues are I think either related or one in the same. To be honest it's keeping me from adopting a full Designer workflow for my illustration business.

  4. ADß is shaping up beautifully. Great work!

When expanding a stroke, I feel the result consists of a lot more vertices than should be strictly necessary. For shapes I would use 6, maybe 8 Affinity Designer (ß too) ends up with 24.

Continued shape modification would be a lot easier if the shape had fewer control points.

    Possible?

Hi Gatada, this is a fairly consistent issue and has been brought up numerous times in the forums. I believe it's being looked into.

  5. Hi team, just wondering if there has been any headway on the boolean tidying up issue? See attached.

It's weird because it seems inconsistent. It appears that the closer two paths are to each other the more nodes gets placed all along each path and sometimes even a third path is generated from the two intersecting/overlapping paths.

What makes this problematic is that after the boolean if you want to further manipulate the resulting shape, you are dealing with sometimes hundreds of nodes. For example here in the attached windshield/windscreen image I would have duplicated the darker "window seal" element to build a shadow area under the upper ridge. Because of all of the nodes now I'm forced to redraw a new element for that and try to get it into the same shape. Not to mention cleaning up and removing unwanted extra pieces...

Sorry to keep harping on this but to me this is very important stuff and I hope it's being addressed.  :)

  6. Hehe, :) when I said distort type I was thinking along the lines of something like this:

    https://www.behance.net/gallery/22937595/Diversity-cover-art-for-Derwent-Brass-UK

These piece was actually done in Affinity Designer and it was done using guides and skewing each letterform individually. In illustrator you'd probably use the Warp>Flag effect to achieve a similar effect.

If your layout work includes stuff like this, right now Designer is not really well suited... I believe something similar to Ai's distort feature set is on the AD feature roadmap...

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/842-affinity-designer-feature-roadmap/

  7. Basic layouts should be fine.

If you plan on distorting your type... i.e. banner arching or warping, twisting etc... be prepared for a bit of a work around. Straight layout of copy blocks, headlines, images and backgrounds and whatnot should be fine... as long as it handles what ever you need in terms of output formats you should be fine. Probably outputting as pdf is your best bet. Myself I haven't used it for any kind of layout as yet, just illustration that I then output as high res pixel files.

  8. I'm going to chime in here and say that I do miss a 1 click scissor type solution. (I don't use the knife tool in Ai but I do use the vector eraser a lot, but that's a different thread) :-)

Any time I have to go up to a menu when creating vector paths is extra work period, over the course of a complex illustration it adds up. (I do have join and break on a keyshort - didn't see a close curve keyshort option)

Why not add just add the ability to setup a modifier key like option or control with the node tool active to break a path? Bam, done.

Would like to see a bit of a re-visit on the join curve/close curve workflow...  not to mention that I still find the break, join and close curve tool shelf icons to be too similar. I still find myself hovering to confirm the right icon... personally I'd be fine with a join nodes tool, if I need to close a curve I'd either click the join nodes tool (or keyshort) on an open path or select each node and enact the join nodes tool... do we need both close and  join curves?

I guess taken in isolation yes sure these things do work as they are currently and I am able to get along alright, but multiply all of these extra clicks and mouse travel over a large project under a deadline and it becomes a thing ....rant over. :-)

  9. Hi,

I always wanted nods selection rotate or scale would be available. I only found how to scale a selection of nods with the transform box but is not perfect. Maybe one day :)

Same here pela. Scale, rotate, align, etc... Maybe even some sort of soft selection... i.e. select a node, scroll mouse to define fall-off circle, drag.

One thing at a time. ;-) In the meantime there are ways to work around these minor things. :-)

  10. Thanks MEB,

I encourage you to pick up that pen and give it a go!! The thing that's funny is my Wacom tablet is a tiny little thing but the smaller it is the less ground you need to cover when using it. I'm looking forward to do more of this kind of stuff...  :D

  11. Thanks MEB!

I am using a small 5x3 wacom graphire tablet with pen, I keep my brush opacity set usually between 30 and 50%, and use pressure to vary the strength, I used only the DAUB oil pastel brush from Paolo's Pigmento series, no blenders, no transparency, basically it's as if I was really using an oil pastel and laying down the colour. Old school meets new school sort of thing ;-).

I wanted to find a process or system that I can rely on and not have to "think" too much about, but will allow for any sort of expression I need. The goal is to end up focusing on the art and the concept and not so much the technique.

I'll know really if it's a success once I do a few more images. :-)

  12. Hey all, here's a redo experiment of an illustration project I had a few years ago for an article about how "Successful People" manage their thoughts...

The goal here was to revisit this illustration and try to only create it using a "pixel painting inside vector shapes" workflow in Designer for a new look. I'm really happy with the process and the outcome and plan to adopt it to a few more ideas I have on the drawing board.

Trying to keep the process as simple as possible, I used only one brush for consistency and didn't employ any effects or multiply/screen layers for shading or highlighting. It's all painting. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly pretty quick.

I like the background, but I also like it without....

    Hope you like.

    Cheers,

    Kevin
