[Implemented] Document Units - Picas
fde101 replied to ERZ's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
The metric world probably doesn't have much use for Picas/Points, so as more of the world turns to metric, the US may have become rather isolated in the continued use of this unit of measurement. As Serif is based in the UK (I think?), they may well be working with people who are quite experienced in the field, but who are all using metric and thus don't realize the continued importance of this measurement within the US. -
New Cooperation Feature
fde101 replied to Lecube's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
For simple writing (not layout), there is SubEthaEdit, so a partial precedent exists. Also, for working on video content (rather than page layout), the paid version of Davinci Resolve has similar capabilities. -
I also found it rather curious that this was omitted.

Seems to me a potentially useful addition to help with the organizational issues dealing with multiple chapters would be to simply allow pages to be organized into "groups" / "folders" that could then be collapsed in the page list - even call them "chapters" perhaps...

Yes, while I am by no means a pro myself, I have studied it just enough to know that here in the US the majority of the professional publishing world works in terms of picas and points as is being requested here. It will be very difficult to get the program to be taken seriously in US professional circles without that option.

If I use the "Cloud Tool" to drag out a shape, then click the bubbles option in the toolbar to adjust the slider and leave that open while switching to the table tool, the popup with the slider remains on the screen. Clicking on it after dragging out a table crashes the beta.

After Effects PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
fde101 replied to videopixels's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
During the probably-quite-long wait for this, check out Fusion: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/ While I would not put it past the Affinity team to be capable of producing a product like what you are asking for, it seems to be *way* outside their current scope, so I certainly wouldn't be expecting it anytime soon. -
Closing

There was a time when this was explicitly spelled out as a violation of Apple's Human Interface guidelines, but with the shift to try to push everyone onto the new "Auto-save" scheme (which I personally am NOT a fan of) they are now saying that apps should "opt in" to auto-save instead when they work with documents, so they seem to have removed those guidelines that relate to apps which choose not to do so. -
I agree. I'll subscribe to content (ex. lynda.com, puremix.net) but not to software.

Motion has been mentioned a few times; if you don't mind a rather different approach, check out Fusion (from BlackMagic Design) too - it is node-based rather than layer-based but if you can wrap your head around it that actually provides a lot more flexibility. Free version too.

Removing dust in RAW Develop
fde101 replied to nimbus109's topic in Tutorials (Serif and Customer Created Tutorials)
You could try the Blemish Removal tool: select that tool (bandaid with a circle behind it) and drag from the dust spot to an area with a similar texture to what you want to leave there. Otherwise, try the inpainting brush after developing, once in the photo persona. -
Affinity Publisher
fde101 replied to Wolfi's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
While you are waiting, you might want to check out some of the other solutions already out there, like Scribus: https://www.scribus.net (I'm sure there are quite a few others out there but that is the one that comes to mind off the top of my head). If by database you are looking for a mail merge function of some sort, it looks like there is a Scribus extension for that (I have not tried it - just found it with a quick Google search), though it appears you would need to export a CSV file from the database to use it: https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Scribus_Generator -
That's the problelm. Power cords often dangle off the table and can go across a walking path to reach an outlet. Not only does this create a tripping hazard, but it can result in a laptop being pulled off the table/desk and bringing it crashing to the ground (bye-bye laptop). The MagSafe ports help to avoid that because the connections are intentionally *weak* - they break free and can simply be plugged back in after that. With USB-C, we are back to the danger zone.

Portrait Pro as plugins
fde101 replied to Kmau's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Portrait Pro seems to be working; however the related Portrait Pro Body and Landscape Pro plugins (which can be purchased in a bundle with Portrait Pro) cause Affinity Photo to crash when trying to launch them. Mac OS X Versions: Affinity Photo 1.5.1 Portrait Pro Studio 15.7 64-bit (works) Portrait Pro Body Studio 1.3.3 64-bit (crashes) Landscape Pro Studio 1.4.4 64-bit (crashes) -
Go to File / Document Setup and there is a "Document Units:" option that allows you to select the units you want to work in - is that what you are looking for with "Selectable Units"?

[AP Feature request] Text on path, warp text
fde101 replied to Rafal's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
For text on a path: create the path (pen tool or similar), then select the "Artistic Text" tool and click on the path (you will see the pointer change to reflect what it will do as you get it close to the path). EDIT: Sorry, just saw "AP" - I had assumed Affinity Designer as this is really more of a feature that would fit within its realm rather than in the context of Affinity Photo. These instructions are for Designer; this does not appear to work in Photo; however, if you have both programs, you can use the "Edit in Designer..." and "Edit in Photo..." options in the File menu to send the document back and forth between the two and make use of both tool sets. Once the text is on a path (in Designer) it will work just fine and can even be edited in Photo (I just verified that by doing it). -
I'm curious too to see how On1 Photo RAW stacks up, but I wouldn't even begin to think that it will compare to Affinity Photo for the kinds of things it is designed for, no matter how much they be advertising it as an "editor." I see On1 as being more in line with Aperture, LR, DXO Optics Pro, and Capture One - those programs are kind of in one box, while Affinity Photo, Photoshop, GIMP, Pixelmator, etc. are in another box. Even if Photo RAW has you well covered to repalce LR, you will still want something like Affinity Photo for those edits and cases that are too complex for that tool to handle. What I would like to see is something like "Export to Application" or "Edit in External Application" functionality in one of the organizational tools (DAM software) that actually sends the undeveloped RAW file to an external application and captures an exported TIFF/JPEG/PSD/whatever from that application to sit alongside that RAW image in the catalog/session... ideally with a menu of configured or recently used ones, so that if I were using said app as my catalog, and it had its own RAW development, but I came across a photo I wanted to develop using the RAW engine from some other application, I could do that and have the developed photo show up in the catalog where I started. So, say On1 were to add this to Photo RAW, and I decided to use that for organizing my photos due to its speed, I may sometimes want to send a photo into DXO to develop it because of DXO's superior lens correction or noise reduction features, but the final product should still wind up back in my catalog in On1 to be browsed along with my other images. Of course, this is also a hint to the Affinity team for when working on their DAM solution...

Photoshop Apply Image Functionality Needed
fde101 replied to JimGoshorn's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
I agree that this could be made much simpler. Affinity's channel handling could use some improvement - but at least it is *possible* for now if I am correctly interpreting what you want to do, and hopefully they will improve things later on. It seems like a relatively "easy" thing they could do in the short term would be to make it possible to "Apply Image" from another open image (pick from a list) or, ideally, from another layer in the same image, without having to save it first and select it in a file picker. If they find doing it from another layer difficult, then an option in the context menu of a layer to "Open Layer as New Image" might be a helpful shortcut? Note also that if the source and destination channels are the same you can skip the first three steps above... To that end, adding the "Load To layer channel" options to the other channels for the layer (so directly copy the red channel to the green channel without going through a spare) would reduce the first three steps to just one - and I'm rather surprised those options aren't available already; they would seem like an obvious option to have? -
Photoshop Apply Image Functionality Needed
fde101 replied to JimGoshorn's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
I think you would need to go through an "extra" channel to basically move the source channel to the destination channel first (through an intermediate layer) then apply from there, turning off the other channels? I don't have it in front of me right now, so don't remember exact names and may be missing a step, but I believe it would be something like this right now: 1. With the source layer selected, right-click the source channel in the channels list and make an extra channel from it 2. Duplicate the source layer and select the duplicate in the layers list. 3. Right-click the extra channel that was created and apply it to the destination channel of the (selected) duplicate layer 4. Save the copy of the layer as an image to use as a source 5. Select the destination layer 6. Use the Apply Image filter to apply the exported image to the desired channel (turn off the other ones in the channels list) 7. Delete any intermediate items (extra channel, the duplicate layer, the saved image) if they are no longer needed Assuming I got that right, there is obviously plenty of room for future improvement in this workflow, but it should at least be possible. 4. Select the destination layer -

fde101 replied to JimGoshorn's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
You can control which channels Apply Image works on by turning on and off editing of the channel in the Channels palette (the pencil icons). I haven't used this feature in Photoshop enough to know if that is exactly what you are looking for? -
I spent how much time looking for this and there it is... Evidently in all the wrong places :) Thank you!
