  1. I think a lot depends on what you were doing with the Plus software and how much you understood.  If, like me, you started with the "fix everything" buttons and didn't do much more than a bit of cropping, AP is a whole new ball game!  It's not hard though - you just have a lot of options.  If you started as a power user then you already understand what you want to do, so it's just a case of looking it up if it's not already obvious.

A big difference is the replacement of paper manuals with video tutorials - It suits my "monkey see, monkey do" approach but it's not everyone's idea of a good thing.

  2. Much as I hated it as a management style, I'd like to see a *JFDI option in Affinity products - if I want to close or exit something I'd like it to happen without being asked if that's really what I wanted to do.  It's mainly a concern when e.g. files have been exported and AP treats that as a change and insists on confirmation that I don't want to save.

    * In case you've never been subjected to it, JFDI = Don't question me, Just eFfing DIt.

I'm wondering how similar Affinity is to Serif 8 and if it's going to be a steep learning curve for me?

I think the main problem of starting photo editing is that you don't know what you're trying to achieve, so you don't know where to start.   If you're already an experienced user of any photo editing program you've a good idea of what you're looking for, so it's just a question of knowing where to find it.  AP's a bigger beast than PhotoPlus, and it looks like the UI has been designed to appeal mainly to PhotoShop users, but it's still (mostly :)) consistent and sensible.  This video by DrippyCat is a good one to get you started, as are his other videos.

I get the impression that some staff moderators don't like to see competing products being mentioned.

I've never seen that!  Suggestions to use a competing product are commonplace whenever someone points out a shortcoming in an Affinity product - I've seen valid criticism / clarification and I've seen advice on how to use them (!), but nothing to support that impression.

  5. I tried creating an image in AP and the default location was C:\Windows\System32 - it's defined as the default somewhere!   The problem is that having exported to a different folder I can't get back to System32 - I've reset and rebooted, but it stubbornly refuses to use any location other than the last one!  I'm grasping at straws here, but you could try resetting AP (hold <ctrl> key while it starts) or running it with admin privileges (right click on the icon and select more).
