affinity photo Applying an Astronomical process to a terrestrial Image
IanSG replied to John Rostron's topic in Share your work
Definitely the most interesting offer I've had this week! -
Hi John - you beat me to it! This was taken in Winchester Cathedral with my GX80, set to a 7 shot HDR bracket, focussing on the altar. Similar thing here, but I made a number of attempts to get the window properly exposed / focussed, and completely failed! Given the short fl I was using, the focussing should have been almost foolproof! Post processing for both was to use a tone mapped HDR image and apply a bit of dodging to bring out some of the shadow detail.

I've been doing some HDR in churches recently and found stained glass windows surprisingly difficult to autofocus on. I'll use manual focus next time, but is this something you've experienced? FWIW, I think there's a significant difference in the window - thanks for sharing! -
Hi Chris Thanks for that - I'd completely missed the Preferences button!

Apologies if I've missed something, but how do I save a custom crop preset? The help says it can be done, but it doesn't say how.

DNG FILES
IanSG replied to MGBJAY's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Thank you, but I tried a few files first, and the originals have been backed up! That said, I now use the DNG converter to upload my SD cards, so I no longer keep the originals. -
DNG FILES

I recently converted all my Pentax DNG, Canon CR2 and Panasonic RW2 files to Pentax DNG - it saved quite a lot of disk space, but I didn't notice any other changes. I'd be interested to hear if your results are different. -
DNG FILES
IanSG replied to MGBJAY's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Straight answer - yes! However (!) I'm assuming you're using Adobe's DNG converter - there may be other converters that don't produce a "real" DNG file. -
I've just had a look at some of my K-5 DNGs with Fastone - it's displaying / editing the embedded JPEG. If you type <ctrl> R it displays the image / file size of the image it's using. The properties of the DNG files themselves are also correctly displayed, but that's not the data that's being edited.

Under 1.6 the Assistant Manager could be started and changes made to the RAW development options before an image was loaded - this can't be done now.
-
This no longer happens with V1.7.0,231 - the selection brush is noticeably more responsive, too!
-
Sorry, I was wrong - it's happening with other images! They're all HDR merges. I've tried it on 2 other images that were developed using 32 bit RAW output - one crashes, the other doesn't.

If a brush selection is made and then Refine Edges, the program crashes every time. This is only happening with the attached file, created with v1.6. Cathedral2.afphoto

I like to be selective about what I sharpen (e.g. I like fluffy clouds and sharp trees) so rarely do any sharpening in Develop. On the other hand, I find the shadows and highlights adjustment in Develop does what I need, so I rarely use the Photo version. As @GabrielM said, it's down to personal preference. It's worth reviewing them from time to time though - the way individual tools behave changes as AP evolves.

I've had the same problem with a different Huion tablet. I eventually fixed it while playing with the Windows Ink settings and deleting / reinstalling the tablet drivers. Frustratingly, I've tried to replicate what I did but can't get back to the original problem! The only thing I can think of that might help is to make sure that old drivers are deleted and don't hang around in memory (they can be tenacious!).

Affinity on Steam?
IanSG replied to mission's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Is there any reason to think that Steam would do any better (for Serif)? If I remember rightly, the people advocating that Affinity apps should be available via the MS Store were also using the one stop shop / simplified updates argument. I genuinely don't know why those would be an issue unless people need to reinstall their OS frequently.
