myclay got a reaction from DenysP in Affinity Photo for 3D Artists - Normalmap/Heightmap creation - wip
    Hi all  :) ,

So far Affinity Photo is impressive and quite useful for an 3D Artist.

I decided to try my luck in making a heightmap/normalmap creation solution for it.
It obviously needs some more work but it already gives passable enough results at least in
the simple setup with Brush input vector support

    the more advanced setup:
Shapes, Texts and Brush input are currently supported,
    inward/outward is available.
    there are two ways of adding shapes available;
one which is piling them over each other and the other is mixing their height.
You can therefore erase parts of brush work and shapes/Texts -vector data at the same time.

Heightmaps are already useful but the Normalmaps in the more advanced Setup have a strong discoloration.

next big steps are corrections and refining the output and creating macros for accelerating the workflow.

    greetings

The Arm64EC thing is kind of interesting, but it is basically a transitional tool for developers to use to gradually provide native ARM64 ports as part of the development process, it is not how the "emulation" Windows provides work.
My comment was more that I don't think Serif is doing this at all - I don't think they are explicitly transitioning their apps to ARM for Windows (yet?) - so they are likely fully "emulated" at this point (in whatever sense Windows "emulates" x64 under ARM64 systems).

I think that's probably correct, though perhaps they did some enablement work to at least allow it to run in this mode.

There are incremental x64 app translations as well as fully native ARM builds.

Starting as a fully emulated x64 workload After recompiling the most CPU-intensive parts as Arm64EC After continuing to recompile more x64 modules over time Ending result of a fully native Arm64EC app

Apparently users can get a glimpse if the applications main executable is partial or fully using ARM64EC by looking into the Task Manager

Some people need certificates for their professional pursuits, not necessarily for acquiring new skills, but to enhance their resumes or CVs and compensate for the absence of a degree.
However, I must concede to your viewpoint, like how Adobe handle their professional certificates, which is obviously similar to purchasing social media blue ticks. But I believe that Affinity will approach this matter differently.

This is probably because linux users actually want to use linux, while most windows users are stuck with what they got from the store.

I've noticed the loudest anti-cross platform people in this forum often say they totally daily drive Linux, but if that were true they wouldn't be so against their favourite softwares coming to Linux. Best guess is they just use windows and want to get a leg up in the debate like "guys come on I totally use Linux daily and it's awful no one should use it, I should know because I totally use it myself, please don't make software for me or Linux even though i totally use it." - Seems sus.

Cross platform software should be encouraged and celebrated.

The showcased snarkiness is troublesome. It doesn´t help that you apparently have no idea nor any fixes or good workarounds.
The recommendation of using Photoshop is also of little value in this 11 pages spawning thread.

IF you know a way, please make a Video tutorial explaining the process on how it works.
Bonus points if you show the exporting from Affinity Photo.

    Edit;
I will make it even easier for you, here are provided test files to use for each channel.

This wrapping stuff around with the help of AI looks interesting.

EDIT; not 100% useful when it needs to be accurate and or truthful to reality but for quickly modifying placeholder images it looks interesting.

You might find that it makes a nice work environment even if you're not doing desktop publishing. It gives you the main Designer and Photo functions within one application, which can be very useful. And if you do any text work in Designer, it gives you some nice enhancements (columns, linked text frames, auto-correct, hyperlinks, Find/Replace, etc.)

Rebelle has since v5 AI included for upscaling your works (because all those simulations are resource hungry and up-scaling the result with AI is less taxing), its called NanoPixel technology.
AI can be helpful if it´s used as an aid to overcome technical mishaps like fixing a too small set canvas or aiding in masking out flying hair etc.

Anyone in need of a good free Upscaler
    here is one:
    Try "UpScayl" (PC/MAC/Linux and Online)
It works with AI, upscals 4 time and 8 times,
( 8 times, will "really" take some time )
and have different modes. Is pretty good in
    my opion

Please include the option to update all 3 programs at once so we don't have to load each one and update separately.
If a user owns Publisher, I assume it can see the file paths for the Designer and Photo installs.
The updater should check each program's version and make sure D and P are at least the same version as A

If you have not enrolled into the beta program yet and would like to take part, you can do so here. This will immediately give you access to the latest 2.4 beta builds to try for yourself.
If you are already enrolled in the beta program you have two options:
    1. If you still have the 2.3 beta installed, you can now run up those beta versions and you will be prompted to update them to the 2.3 beta.
    2. If you have uninstalled the 2.3 beta, you will need to go back to Your Account -> Downloads and product keys and find your previous order for the Affinity Beta Software Program, and you can download the 2.4 beta from there.
    Thanks,

Yes, I know that painting of Magritte. As I said, this feature will be useful to upscale in most cases. At least if you only want bigger photos for decorative purposes. But it will be a problem for press photos and evidence photos, because the upscaled photos no longer really represent the reality.
But that is of course not the biggest problem with AI. It will cause a huge amount of fakes and lies. It already does. And it will make it easy for many people to falsly take all the credit for things they are in fact not able to create. I'm afraid creativity will loose it's meaning and we will be flooded with nice looking, but meaningless trash. It will become much more difficult to make a living with true creative work. Much more difficult than it already is.
And these are only the problems concerning creatives. There will be a lot of problems in other ranges too. Think of, that also the Internet already turned out to be a huge multiplicator for lies. An instrument that enables muddleheads to become presidents.

This is not a Pipe is written underneath

I upscaled it 4X with AI, It is still not a pipe, you can´t use the image on your end (phone,tablet/pc screen etc) as a pipe.

AI upscaling can sometimes fail and distorts results. As with every other technology,  to AI it applies too; it is best to be wary of using AI without vetting the results with the original data.

I am eager to know what AI systems Serif has vaguely said will come.

    Hi All,
I’m pleased to say that we have just be pushed 2.3.1 (2212) to beta and plan a full 2.3.1 release next week (if nothing new & significant is found). There are only a limited number of fixes as detailed in my post here.
We think it's important to address a few high customer impact bugs quickly in a 2.3.1 release, in a fast/stable manner.
The release of 2.4.0 with improvements and features and many other fixes will likely take a while to be "release ready" (need a longer beta testing cycle due to having more significant code changes). We have been internally testing 2.4.0 and so @Serif Info Bot has been posting about fixes found in 2.4.0.xxxx, and those fixes will be appearing in the next release cycle, not 2.3.1
With that in mind we will be starting 2.4.0 beta very shortly (hopefully in just a couple of weeks). Looking forward to seeing you all on here for that!
    Thanks again,
    Patrick Connor
