  1. I work in a jewelry company, I do brochures, catalogues using Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Mainly I do cropping of jewelry backgrounds keeping only the jewelry piece for later layouts. This process requires defining selections manually and use for masking. I have been trying to move from CS to Affinity, but somehow some workflow are not behaving in a friendly manner. Here are some points that I'm hoping the developers could do something.

    1. Not keeping the feather values across the tools
    2. Not able to assign hotkeys to macros
    3. Not able to drag a freehand/marquee tool selection to a specific location (this is really important when defining add/subtract selections using basic shapes. Usually PS allows you to drag, scale & re-position a marquee shape via spacebar, I'm not able to figure out how to do this in AP up to now.
    4. When using the pen-tool converting the path into a selection does give you an option how much feathering is applied, therefore you need to run the feathering each time (so time consuming). Also after defining a path and when you need to create another path the previous path goes hidden mode, was really hoping it stays visible till I'm done with all the path to be converted in to a selection.

If ever would really appreciate if you could kindly look into this...

  2. I usually do cut-outs in Photoshop using the pen tool by defining the shape to cutout over a mask layer then specifying the feather radius via right click options of the pen tool & filling it with the background color (Black) to hide away (mask) the selections. I find this difficult to achieve in AP where it has to be done in several steps which is quite annoying specially the feather option has to be typed over & over each time you need to apply feathering. I hope you can simplify this similar to Photoshop.

  3. You already can effectively do this

I look forward to the sale. ;)

Hi Mark, kindly implement a right click option to the pen tool for stroke to be able o make selection that can specify a feather radius (note it should keep the input values throughout the entire session) this to make masking using pen selection much easier like photoshop.

  4. Hi johnsawan79,

    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

In Affinity Photo you can use the Pen Tool to create the path then convert it to a selection pressing the Selection button on the context toolbar. To feather it go to menu Select ▸ Feather, then click the Mask Layer button on the bottom of the Layers panel to create a mask from the current feathered selection. Alternatively, after you convert the path to a selection you can also go to menu Select ▸ Refine Edges, and set the Output dropdown on bottom to Mask, and use the Refine Selection options to work/refine the selection.

Here's a video tutorial about Cutting Out that may also help. Additionally check the video tutorials from the section 4. Selections and Masking from the In-house Affinity Photo Video Tutorials thread.

Hi MEB, I get what you mean, but its a time consuming process having to go through several steps just to mask. I work on cut-outs particularly jewelries where I have to remove their backgrounds, in Photoshop its just a matter of applying a layer mask & hide background by defining areas using either lasso or pen tool filling it with black to hide away the unwanted portions. In Affinity photo's case its counter productive, its time consuming to go through all the several process just to get something done supposed to in a matter of 1-2 seconds.

The most annoying part is that the feather radius has to be re-set again & again since its not able to keep my last input values. Please also note that the masking I'm working on requires me to mask areas bit by bit as an example, like spaces between stones in a big jewelry set, opaque areas of the jewelries, hundreds sometimes thousands of them & requires precise shape selections which cannot be achieve by a selection brush tool since jewelries tends to have lots of reflection & color bleeds due to its reflective surface characteristics. I'm sure this is not just in jewelries but to anything that requires precise cutout. I hope affinity photo team will reconsider easy options for cutout like able to mask areas by just filling it with black or white either lasso or pen, also enable keeping feather radius values throughout the session. It would also be nice to have right click options for selection types specially for pen tool (i.e new, add, sub, int. also stroke, feather radius etc...) same for other tools as well. I would also like to to raise the issue regarding lasso tool where I'm not able to add selection from inside the marching ants,  I checked all the possible modifiers but none of them was able to give the results needed, subtracting from inside & out works OK though.

I really want to move to Affinity since Adobe is so expensive I just cant afford it and hoping affinity photo will be even better than Photoshop with the help of the all beta testers.

  5. In your wacom panel (at Windows Settings), have you tried varying pressure sensitivity, maybe trying very high sensitivity setting? (heck, or even the opposite, very firm. )

Also, some people have experienced solving issues by disabling "Use Wacom Ink" setting in your Wacom Panel (icon is at Windows Settings). This setting is at "mapping" in your wacom panel/window.

Another thing. First to all that, I recommend you to add the application (for example, Affinity Photo) in your wacom panel, and do all optimizations required for AP there.  Who knows, it might also help in solving the problem, as things related to tablet's drivers and sensitivity tend to be quite complex.

Edit: Following some weird logic, I just thought of an idea: trying  -imo after all above is tried- to disable, if is that possible -I don't know as my wacom is not touch- the touch feature. Might be only detecting it as non pen, who knows... My bet is sth of the above, though.

I have done that as well, same result...

  6. What happens when you enable the "Force Pressure" button on the context bar?

Nothing happens Mark, as if I'm using a mouse not able to draw light to heavy strokes depending on pressure applied. It was like this since the 1st beta up to the latest beta released. I've played around with the other options seems to work fine except the pressure setting. Please refer to the video link for your reference. PC: Win 7 64bit, 8BG ram intel core i7. Using WACOM CTH-480.

  7. I'm working on jewelry products. In photoshop I use to mask to remove the backgrounds (cut out) using either lasso tool or the pen tool. The usual workflow would be applying a mask to a layer, select the mask layer, make an area selection using a lasso or a pen path converting it into a selection with the specified feather radius & fill it with pure black to hide or white to reveal the masked areas. I'm not able to do that in Affinity Photo, is this possible with AP? Would really appreciate if you could kindly give an idea how to achieve this or would really appreciate adding the same feature too for easy masking of objects.

  8. 1. Right click option for pen tool to be able to specify feather radius, new, add, sub, intersect & stroke path.

2.To be able to fill selections based on the background/foreground using backspace/alt+backspace (good for precision masking selections made with marquee, pen & lasso tool.

    3. To be able to reset background/foreground color to black & white using D/X keys.

    4. Mask layer to appear on the right side of the masked layer not below.

    5. Adjustments layers to appear on top of target layer not below offset by a few pixels to the right for visual clue.

    6. Additional Smaller or bigger thumbnail size for layers options.

    7. Mini size dock-able studio elements with pop-up when clicked, to give us more work-space.

    8. Auto-hide/show upon hovering the persona toolbar, to give us more work-space.

    9. Dock-able paint brush options.

10 Ability to create guides by dragging lines from the ruler with snap to grid options by right clicking the ruler.

11 Provide us some gradient presets on the toolbar please....

12 A folder icon for a Group/Folder layer to distinguish it against regular layers... similar to p.s.

13 Ability to hide the bottom status bar to give us more work-space...

    14. A more compact size color, swatches, foreground/background indicators lots of space wasted...

    15. Better cursor indicator which tool is active like eraser, lasso, dodge, burn, etc.. most of them showing only round cursor

    16. Shortcut keys for brush, clone, eraser hardness...

    Issues found:

    1. When i have a current marquee or lasso selection, I'm not able to create a shape that i want to add or subtract from inside the current selected area instead its causing to move the marching ant... this should not behave like this, moving the selection should be accompanied by a CTRL key to avoid moving selections accidentally.

    2. No gradient panel?

  9. I have been testing the Affinity Photo today, first thing i noticed is that when using the pen tool when defining a shape in an image; there is no right click option to specify the feather size before committing the selection based on the path created using the pen tool. Would be great if we can have that feature on the next release. Second, toggling/resetting between black & white Background/foreground color (preferably using d/x keys). Not able to fill masking with color based on the current background/foreground color (back space) to hide/show masked selected areas. Preferably a separate marquee tool icon from the lasso.

  10. Hi John, it looks like you have Aero disabled, unfortunately we don't support installations where Aero is disabled (you should have got a warning when you started the application), as it uses a different graphics driver which can cause rendering problems and severe performance problems.

    Hi Mark,

Its actually affinity that's disabling the aero, it ussually behaves like this when launching the app & open a new document at first its giving me a black workspace then when I open again a new document & select option for transparent then it disables aero. Also showing tool cursors are offset to where they should point to. And in addition, when this issue occurs I'm not able to re-anable the aero again & requires me to at least logoff to revert & enable my laptop's aero.

  11. Hi I've updated beta to version 1.5.0.4, still having issues with AERO being disabled when launching the app and with some tools like the pencil, vector, pen & the shapes. Please refer to the below video showing the cursor far from the actual lines being drawn. As for the pen same issue where plotting the points/nodes is off where the cursor is located making it difficult to link to other points. For the shapes difficulties with grabbing the nodes are offset. Win7 64bit ATI RADEON HD 6490M laptop

  12. Installed the designer beta, i'm using win 7 64bit with ATI RADEON HD 6490M. It installed fine but running the app has some few buggy behavior.

    1. When launching the app, opening a new document disables Aero theme and appears that no option is available to enable it again unless you log off & logged in on the system again. In my observation it appears like it crashed the display driver.

    2. In relation to point 1 closing & opening the app again while aero is disabled displays a warning message shown attachment #2.

    2. New document appears all black, this occurs in each time on a newly started computer instead of showing the artboard. Also in my observation as soon as the aero is disabled (referring to point 1) closing & running the app again displays the newly created document properly.

    3. Clicking on tools/panels has a slow/sluggish response not instantaneous.

    4. Upon testing the pen tool, when creating a point, result is not created where i clicked, instead it is adjacent to the cursor location around 10px or more.

Attachment #1 is my system specs.
