It's fairly bright... Now that you ask, I don't even know how to turn down the brightness. When my document's open it has a white background. The checkerboard only shows up in relation to a window sitting on top of it!?

Interesting... I created a new doc, checking transparency. What came up was a doc with a white bkgd. When I pull down a menu item, around the edges of the window I see a "shadow" of the checkerboard you mentioned. I've attached a screenshot to show you. Arrrgh! I can't get the transparent bkgd you've talked about! I'm on Catalina working in Designer. I've followed the suggestions above, and still can't get it! What'm I not doing?

I'm still learning Designer, but is there a "convert text to outline" option before exporting? Just a thought.

I just stumbled across something called "Super Vectorizer" and it seems to have a pretty decent tracing capability. Today (2/24/17) it's on sale for $10 vs $25 (I believe). I'll have a better feel for it after awhile. It got my immediate needs met, anyway... Donna
