Gear maker got a reaction from Lee_T in V2 AD Knife tool not working on clipped objects
I have a drawing with a lot of clipped layers.  When I use the knife tool to cut this the shapes themselves are cut but the clipped layers inside them disappear.  Actually the clipped layers seem to be severely distorted and move way off the canvas.

A portion of the original is in the top view.  And the same portion of the knifed area is in the lower view.  The knife did not touch the very left portion of the image.  Attached are the actual drawings.  Temp1 is the original, Temp2 is after the cut.

Sorry for the late response, I missed your entry somehow.  Anyway what I can't remember is when I turn off several layer's fx if the layer A had a blur or was it a drop shadow or did it have both.  And did layer have B an inner glow or an outline or both.  Yes the program does remember the setting of each fx for me even when it has been deactivated.  Many layers have several fx that I have played with before deciding what effect I finally decide upon, so I can't look for fx that have other than default settings either.
If there was just a visibility toggle that did not remove the checkmark from the fx then there wouldn't be the problem.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

This is a trial thing. Without a document open you see the app name.

With documents open you see the document name and zoom level.

When a document floated, the replacement for Separated Mode, you also see the zoom level in its title bar.

Seems to be mainly a Trial thing I now know - the app name and [Trial] disappear when you pay, but you still need to keep file names reasonably short

I’ve attached a short video showing one easy-to-do workflow.
First set most of the snapping options ON – I don’t know which is actually needed. Next draw a Square Star, set the number of points to 16, and colour it. Then draw a Star, set the number of points to 16, drag it so it snaps to the first Square Star, and colour it. Then draw another Star, set the number of points to 16, rotate it by 360/number-of-points/2, drag it so it snaps to the first Star, and colour it. Then draw an Ellipse and colour it. When drawing the shapes start from the centre of the page and use Ctrl+Shift to keep the height and width the same.
My example is not exactly the same as the sample given but it’s easy to modify as can be seen near the end of the video.

Gear maker got a reaction from thedivclass in Is it possible to always "Insert behind selection"
morbandit, I so totally agree with you.  I usually construct my drawing mostly from the top down, meaning I tend to draw a lot of the detail first then the background and that makes the layer's order be from the bottom up.  So I keep having to drag the detail on top of what I just created to keep it visible.  It's easier to drag and reorder 20 layers then it is to hit the toolbar icon before constructing each of 20 shapes.

What I have gotten in the habit of doing is to work with my current layer invisible until the shape is what I want.  Then drag it below the detail and turn the visibility back on to make adjustments and work with the color.

It should be that if the Insert behind selection is clicked once it works for one entry, but if it's double clicked it stays selected until cancelled.

HeatherLouise, there is a switch on the node toolbar that will reverse the direction, but the start/stop node stays the same.    But if you use the node tool, select the node you want to start and stop the path, then click on the Break Curve and then the Close Curve the start/end point will be moved.

emdash, in AD there is an entry in the Stroke panel "Scale with object" which when selected will do what you want.  I don't think there is an equivalent in AP.

Gear maker got a reaction from Frozen Death Knight in Adobe revisited
WOW, yesterday I had to go back to PS6 to update a project.  I couldn't believe how difficult it was to take care of several of the tasks.  15 months ago when I started with AD the main question I seemed to ask was "Why in the world did the Affinity devs do it this way?"  Now going back to PS I find that the way that AD did it makes more sense and usually is easier.

When I started I was looking for a substitute for AI but with no monthly bill.  I had expected AD to be a knockoff of AI.  I admit I was somewhat disappointed when it wasn't.  But I found that most of the actions made enough sense that though they were different they were mostly pretty easy to pick up.  Now going back to Adobe, only when I absolutely have too, I find in most cases the Affinity process (muscle memory aside) really is more natural, logical, intuitive, etc.

I know in the past half year I find myself rarely questioning why does AD does it this way, so I should not have been surprised.  But Adobe's methodology was even so much more cumbersome than I remembered.

I know there are other people on the forum that disagree with this, but I suspect there are not many that have given Affinity a fair try for more than a few months that aren't appreciating the difference between Affinity and Adobe.

Thank you Affinity team for all the planning and work you have done.  Job well done.  Now if we could get some lingering bugs taken care of, like Expand Stroke...  <_<

Select both (all) objects you want resized.  Then in the move tool's context toolbar there is an icon Transform Objects Separately, click this.  The bounding box will only show on one object but if you use it to change the one object they all will change.

I think I’m finally done with my latest drawing, The Streetcar Boat.  In 1905 there were streetcars that went from Minneapolis to the shore of Lake Minnetonka, but the people living around Lake Minnetonka needed a way to continue to their homes.  So a set of 6 steam boats were built to resemble streetcars.  These boats added 27 more stops to the streetcar line.

In 1926 the 6 boats were deemed no longer necessary and were scuttled in the middle of the lake.  In 1979 a diver found the wreck of the Minnehaha and it was raised.  After 17 years of restoration it was put back in service on weekends in the summer making runs between two cities across the lake.

Being 1600 miles away and the wrong time of the year, I used pictures I had and pictures on the web to construct as much detail as possible.  Right down to screws and rivets.

At 4,638 layers, all vectors, it’s my largest drawing so far.  Zooming from the full image to some of the smaller detail requires a zoom of about 80,000%.  So AD is about the only program capable of the detail.

Thank you for including the file.  What I did was to select the 2 nodes on either side of the gap.
Click on Break Curve turning each node into two nodes not connected.  I separated the nodes slightly.  Then selected the 2 left most nodes and clicked Join Curves

Then the two right nodes and clicked Close Curves.  I ended up with two layers, basically the insides of your object and the outside.  I had to switch the order of these in AD so the outside was below the insides. Then selected both layers and did a Subtract.
Finally I did a little tweaking of the nodes to get rid of the bottleneck I had created.  Does this look better?

Tom, the answer is most certainly yes, I would be honored.  I may have even talked to you on one of our trips onboard the Minnehaha.  The provenance of the Minnehaha is something right out of a Clive Cussler book.  I'm glad you enjoyed the drawing as it allows me the ability to at least partially repay the enjoyment of riding the Minnehaha.  I will PM you shortly with some information and we'll have to arrange to transfer the 122MB affinity file.  Mike

Sorry you are having this problem.  When I run into something like this I try increasing the Miter.  I have seen that if it's not high enough the zoom will reach a place where the effect stops.  So I go higher, try 30 on yours.  Another thing I try to do is have a closed shape.  I don't know if yours is or not, but then I can set the align to be Inside.  Just thoughts for you to try.

Honestly I'm not sure why you started to list and ask about every PSP versus Affinity Photo difference you found here?  - What I'm meaning here is, If somebody would start to say "I've been a passionate user of Photoshop (PS) for about 20 years ..." and then starts to list every of the >500 numbers of features he has in PS and can't find in Affinity Photo, or differences in certain features between both apps, then this forum would only be filled with just such threads here!
I would highly recommend to read through the Affinity Photo help system (or some good book/eBook about it), view specific video tutorials for features of your interest and try out how certain things are handled in Affinity Photo in contrast to other software like PSP or PS,  in order to get a better feeling for it.
