They seem to do the same thing.

Okay. I'm very confused.
I said before that I had to release the compound before being able to edit it but that's also false, so I edited my post.

I did do a non-destructive compound (it should be the default, IMO) and that doesn't work for me.
I just tried it again (screenshot). I can only edit it if I remove it from the mask mode.

Example: I have a vector layer and a triangle on a separate vector layer (visual). I want to use this triangle as a mask so that it OCCLUDES the contents of the first layer.
In Pixelmator you could do this by adding a white mask (default) and painting a black triangle on it.
I know I could create a vector rectangle that covers the whole canvas and subtract the triangle from it, then use that as the mask (visual), but is there a simpler way? Especially because when I use a compound as a mask, I cannot edit it without removing it as a mask, changing it and adding it as a mask again.

First of all: Affinity Designer is one of the best mac apps! I love it and I can't wait for Affinity Photo. Finally I can ditch bug-ridden Pixelmator.
You might have already seen my review in the app store in which I listed a bunch of things that I think could be improved or added, but here I want to focus on just one.
When you use a brush with size variance enabled you can control the width of the stroke while painting, but it seems like you cannot currently make changes "after the fact". What I hope to see is the ability to edit the stroke width at each node or point along the path, perhaps similar to the bezier handles.
Side note: I think there should be a "Velocity (Inverse)" setting in the "Controller" drop-down menu for the vector brush tool options but it's missing.
Thanks for stopping by!
What is the difference between Layers and Groups?

Thanks! You're always so helpful. I just noticed that I couldn't select my objects properly (because I had created a group instead of a layer).
Shouldn't there be a keyboard shortcut for creating a new vector layer or is there and I just don't see it? (there's Layer -> New Pixel Layer ⇧⌘N in the menu but not for normal layers)
