Sunset got a reaction from John Rostron in Sunset Blends
A rare chance, lately, to just be creative for half an hour. The result if a mix of two of my photographs - the Albert Memorial outside Manchester Town Hall and a bright, dazzling sunset from one of my upstairs windows. Fast forward a couple of weeks to a very cold day, a little light blending in Affinity Photo, and I now have 'Manchester in the Cold'

If you're sitting comfortably.....the MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display. It had to be a laptop because my workhorse souped up desktop with decent sized monitor will still be my office computer, and I couldn't work with a smaller screen.

And it's going to have to pay for itself, that's my motivation. I have a niece who designs and sells to Liberty, etc etc, so I have something to work towards (and we'll be able to discuss Macs, now). Also, I'll never give up CraftArtist but I'm well into the stage where I want to be working with my own original designs (aspirations for the DT shop??).

Virginia Woolf famously said  'a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction' - this is what I've bought, a room of my own to create graphics. Can you tell that I'm excited  :D  :D  :D ?

Thanks for the link - bookmarked  :)

Hi, I'm Hilary Hartigan, AKA sunset. I always said that when I retired I would buy a new (electric) piano. Yesterday hubby asked me which would I prefer, a piano or a Mac. Let's just say that the Mac will arrive in the next few days :) And, after working my way through Windows 3.1 to Windows 8.1.  I am going to be a complete novice with the Mac.

I'm a total fan of things Serif but I really need something new as 'I'm all scrapped out' (a CraftArtist expression) and I don't want to get left behind on a Windows-Shelf. This looks different and exciting and fresh. By trade I'm a part time lecturer (computing out in the community), a self employed publisher and designer (but looking to change tack), a family history researcher and recorder (nearly finished) and a lover of logic and order. I have a head overflowing with ideas  :D and tons of ambitions  :D . I hope that I can make a useful contribution  :)

Just to say 'thank you' for the Beta, I have had a quick look at it, anything that I can get started on without a manual is always a winner for me! Very happy with the interface, etc., time to redesign my calling cards.... and then watching the tutorials.

I an a happy cat! I found the cat tool for my Mac tonight and somehow or other I created Sunset's cat!

I also had some fun with Affinity Photo removing a street lamp, no waiting signs, graffiti and people from a street scene (no work of art, there are rough edges, it's a practice piece), then used the clarity and a blend mode. Looking forward to giving those family history photos a bit of edge now

This time some Fire Styles (a few of them have transparency, though most do not) for those who might have a use for these things. - [NOTE: that these styles work best when used on very dark (preferable deep black) backgrounds!]

Sunset got a reaction from MEB in Sheared Shadows Please
This was my work flow. I duplicated the object, applied the gaussian layer and changed the colour. Then I used the Mesh Warp but it crashed the program (separate thread). When I restarted the program everything was fine, so I used the Mesh Warp again to bend the shadow, applied some transparency, ditched the deer and added extra snow.  This was done on the Mac,

My photo of Paris taken on the hottest day of 2011 at dusk when the whole of the gardens around the Eiffel Tower seemed to be one big lazy picnic, low lights and a quiet constant hum of activity. I've used a couple of other images - an old letter and a print of old buildings acquired in digital format over the years - and used transparencies and blends to get the effect I wanted. All made with Designer. Just for the enjoyment and the experience of making things.

I had the idea for this rolling around in the back of my head for a while so I thought I'd give it a try and see what came from it.
I've now got it to the point where I'm not very happy with it.
I've added some shadows where some of the pieces of paper aren't fully stuck down - with a related curve - but it still doesn't quite look real enough to me. There's something missing but I don't know what. I tried to add highlights to the "curls" but they didn't look right.
Each letter is an individual shape with enclosed image and text layers, and the shadows are themselves individual layers, so it's all totally adjustable.
Does anyone have any suggestions for improvements? It's just a silly thing that I've made for my own amusement but I would like to get it looking better. Any ideas anyone? Feel free to get petty.

I wanted to use some of the huge collection of digital clipart that I've amassed as a CraftArtist User so, purely for the enjoyment, I made a page with CA then made pages in Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo that used the same clipart elements and the same techniques (transparency was the only one that was created differently and that was easy enough) and to see how the work flow matched. I'm happy with the result. I never intended the three pictures to be precisely the same in any way so there are lots of subtle differences and they are immaterial to me, but I do like the little story that the three pictures tell, and how easy it is to use Designer to make just about anything.
