I just discovered this website that uses AI to trace images to vectors, and it is the best I have found so far. The quality, especially with low resolution images, is remarkable. It offers quite advanced options too. The upload has a max resolution, but this did not seem to affect the result in a negative way. The end result is very usable, with clean vectors.
I would love vector trace for Affinity, but with online tools as good as this, it makes me wonder if they should really put their resources into it. I still would prefer an offline option, even for a price, though...
    Check it out: https://vectorizer.ai/
Here is a random image I scanned with the vectorized result:

I think I’ve probably ‘faffed about’ with this for long enough so it’s time to ‘release it into the wild’ and “go out and do something less boring instead” (as the song, which some members of a certain age might remember, goes).
All done – except for certain stock images – in Affinity Designer and Photo.
It’s just an experimental thing, not a real product.

I fancied doing something shiny, not too easy but not too complicated either, 2 weeks max, so decided to see if I could get this done. Shame it turned out to be such a horrible movie. There was too much background on the photo I used so I cropped it to something a bit more interesting.
Who needs fancy pants gradient meshes when there’s the pen tool
Sorry about the equally horrible compression.

This is the first project using a process I'm developing for colored engraving, on a Nomad CNC machine, of faux ivory substrates, for inlay into jewelry boxes. The process needs more improvement but I was happy enough with the results to begin a second piece.
It begins with the creation of the artwork in Designer.

The actual oval is smaller than show, at least on my screen, about 130 mm wide. The lines to be engraved are 0.15 mm apart. Here is the graphic depiction of the lines to be engraved by the machine. The red color represents one pass out of a total of seven necessary to keep the colors separate.

The final product inset into the box.

The box itself, a gift to my niece. She wanted a "tree" and "daisies" although I gave her Tidytips instead.

Working in 16bit has given a lot better performance with the airbrush, I've really enjoyed working in affinity - and have stuck mostly in affinity for the whole process for this picture, i'm beginning to develop a fun workflow that is efficient - having shortcuts for blend modes in 2.1 is a nice help - Would be great if we could have a 'flip view horizontal' option - it's really handy for illustrators/ designers for spotting errors in their work. and Ideally it would be great to have the Mixer brush in Affinity designer as I had to keep switching apps just for using that tool and sometimes this would cause the app to crash - possibly because i'm working in Beta 2.1.

Great Western Railway (GWR) locomotive City of Truro. I had the pleasure of riding a train drawn by her in the 80s, and when I came across my photos again I thought she'd make a good subject. For the front view I looked up some original drawings on a GWR archive website, which avoided the problem of perspective; for the wheel, I had to make adjustments by guesswork. The colours are authentic GWR colours I found online on a model-makers' web page. The signal gantry is inspired by a magazine photo of a scene on the Severn valley Railway at Bewdley, England. And after I'd made the small lamps, I decided to do a big one. (Lamps or discs were fixed on the front of a loco to indicate what it was pulling, if anything. I used to have a book that explained the code, but I've forgotten what they were.)

    First draft, without shading.

    Driving wheel and maker's plate

The small 'calling-on' signal, the lowest one, is upside-down! I have no idea why it was set up that way, nor why it's facing the wrong way (the track and turnout are to the left). And if you notice there are one or two small details missing . . . yes, they are! The 'distant' signals (yellow) are actually fixed at 'caution' (horizontal) and don't move. I thought I'd make them more interesting. 😊

This is my first completed artwork using Affinity - well 75% Affinity.

I retired nearly 2 years ago and recently cancelled my Adobe Subscription so found Affinity to be the best affordable alternative. I have about 20 pictures of race cars that I work on when I feel like it and this is one that I have decided to finish. Not a well known Formula 1 car and this was it's only Grand Prix.

The nosecone and a few other bits were designed using Adobe but the rest is Affinity Designer and Photo. My next illustration will be pure Affinity.

    I hope you like it.

Thanks - I didn't expect them to reply in particular but was hoping someone else would, which y'all have 🙂
I think what I'm looking for is how you get the silk screen effect. I don't expect a full tutorial from anyone - I'm just not sure what kind of things to be considering that I haven't already.
I know about posterize, noise, and blur but I can't quite find the magic combo. Just saw the comment about half tone and I had tried that also but it wasn't quite right. I'll have to mess around a bit more and see how it looks printed.
For now, I've been making a very simple flower market poster as I've seen this same affect on this kind of thing all over pinterest that makes them look screen printed. Mine is too bright and crisp I think? I've done posterize, noise, half tone, and vignette but it still looks like the red flower pops too much. And I just don't really see any difference between the original version and the one with a bunch of filters. Maybe I've been looking at too much and it just all looks the same to me.
I'd like to try a travel poster in the future if I can figure this out. I love the style!
These examples are original not repros.

Here is an example of a modern flower market poster that has the flat muted effect that looks like screen printing.

And this is mine. One has a bunch of filters, the other doesn't , but I don't really see the difference.

Hi All. I'll be 76y/o in a few weeks (April 2023), so no spring chicken! Art has always been a self-schooled, serious hobby for me, working with colour pencils, water colour, water colour airbrush and oils. I have been comfortable doing fairly basic photo manipulation in PhotoShop for years, but dumped them for Affinity when they went subscription - and don't miss them one bit!

So ... I thought, Why not give digital art a go with this wonderful new suite! Eighteen months in and - from absolutely nowhere - I have illustrated three children's picture books for two different authors. All have been granted Mom's Choice Awards, Honouring Excellence on all three and I'm working on a fourth as I write. I love working digitally. I'm a huge fan of illustrations by Beatrix Potter and I like to think my work is in that vein with a modern twist.

I have attached a few favourites here. All created entirely in Affinity Photo ... Enjoy!
