Click on "Refine" to get to the additional options.

When there´s not the slightest overlapping no "cutting" will happen.
Here´s to an easier more robust/reliable way:
And here´s a quicker way with 2 squares:
1. draw square
2. double and round corners - bake corners
3. select both and call Boolean subtract then Divide right after - 4 corner parts:

Affinity Photo: Flood selection tool comes to mind:

I don´t get the picture - maybe like so?

Not sure if this helps - but overflowing text is marked with a "crossed" red eye:

Try export SVG (for web). It will plot curves per pixel resolution it seems.

It´s in Affinity Photo.

And simply "open with" or how it´s called in Windows on that image won´t work?
-
No clue about the "complexity" of the shapes - but gradient-tool won´t work for you?

If you want a more "painterly" approach there´s the "Paint Mixer Brush" or "Blur Brush Tool" in APhoto.

You might want to "Expand stroke" before Boolean Add curves+shapes:

Procedure:
1. either drag an image onto AD´s icon in the dock or drag it aside the canvas; it will be locked and visible.
2. drag the image to trash
3. AD will prompt with this error:

4. you can´t work around it because macOS trash is blocked; you can´t simply try to put the image back.
5. Hit "OK" and your file will be gone for ever.
Conclusion: Drag an image explicit to the canvas if you prefer drag&drop or use "Place..." from the File menu. When it received a "Lock" as a property don´t delete image (move to the Trash) or you will loose that file.

Ok - happened again - I do not know if I could have rescued it by pulling the image out of trash instantly - but hitting "OK" button will close the file&work - left with nothing.

Are you probably talking about "View->Toggle UI" - shortcut "tab"?

Is there any chance we will ever get a dedicated scale tool? I mean, select anything, objects or nodes, click to set origin and drag to scale (shift-drag to constrain proportionally). To me it’s industry standard. The current scaling options and the new node tool are interesting but limiting.
Seems you didn´t discover Transform modes yet?

I don´t have the issue neither in Inkscape or Intaglio.
The underlying maths needs more love as stated and reviewed all over this forum.
