The stroke should get thinner when both handles a dragged down simultaneously - which don´t happened. I´d like to have a look into that example file.

Simply works here out of the box. 1. open image 2. select portion - copy&paste - new Layer is generated, active and selection still alive 3. call Layer Effects panel - make checkmark on "Color Overlay" and click on the label to make it active 4. Choose color - adjust Transparency and/or Blendmode - done.

Not sure how to embroider "translucency" but if it´s just the overall shape I´d export to a high-res version to PNG and autotrace in Inkscape for instance. I don´t know if the embroidery software can handle 5k nodes on a small template though. F.svg -
Try: Select 1 node from the rounded rectangle and hit Action: Reverse Curves
