Wiredframe reacted to Mark Ingram in Affinity Designer Customer Beta - 1.6.0.81
Click here to download the latest beta
Status: Customer Beta
Purpose: New features
Requirements: A valid product key, issued when Windows Affinity Designer version 1.5 was purchased.
This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.
We hope you enjoy the latest build, and as always, if you've got any problems, please don't hesitate to post here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks once again for your continued feedback.
If you have a general question about the software, please head over to the Questions Forum, or if you have any suggestions, please head over to the Feature Requests forum.
Fixes
Fixed startup crashes Fixed application hangs (Not Responding) Improved performance of document render when dragging out a new object Fixed hang when dragging by frame text with snapping enabled Fixed crash reporter failing to generate crash reports Fixed failure to edit a Global Colour Fill that is not already applied Fixed being unable to change matte colour on export Fixed Export Preset not being remembered Fixed setting blend mode for bevel and emboss preventing file from saving Fixed Global Colours importing to Application Palettes incorrectly Fixed Colour well incorrectly showing colour when using Greyscale Added missing boolean operation menu in the Layers panel Fixed EPS load crash Added rotation of nodes in NodeTool Fixed occasional failure to finish loading files Fixed PDF import never completing when they contain tile patterns Further improvements to stroke expansion Improved error reporting in installer Fixed Path text to support changing baseline for multiple lines Improved the way we load ICC and WCS profiles so WCS profiles give a better description Fixed PDF import crash Disabled Radial Controller support (i.e. Dial) unless the --radial-controller flag is passed on the command line -
Wiredframe got a reaction from HiroKhan in Next level constraints / auto layout
Affinity's constraints feature is great, but limited. I just stumbled upon something that would make our lives so much better:
http://westonthayer.com/writing/2016/07/27/layout-experiments-in-adobe-illustrator/
It's even open source: https://github.com/WestonThayer/Bloks
Please Affinity MAKE IT HAPPEN!
EDIT: I just played around a bit and (although working with Illustrator again is a real pain when you are used to Affinity Designer) the principle of "Bloks" is pretty awesome. Unpolished and incomplete but awesome.

I've reproduced this and will get it passed on!
Thanks

Wiredframe reacted to Sean P in Text disappears after duplicating
Thanks for the GIF, I've reproduced the issue and will get it reported - it looks like a simple refresh. Just zooming in/out of the page should refresh it.

Wiredframe reacted to Petar Petrenko in Tables that are as good or betters ( & Easy ) as Ms Office (Word & Publisher)
Tables are planed for the new coming app -- Affinity Publisher. They are not planed (as I know) for Designer and Photo.

Wiredframe reacted to Cmb5104 in Tables that are as good or betters ( & Easy ) as Ms Office (Word & Publisher)
Can the people working on the Affinity range PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE at least
take a look at Mircosoft Word 2016,
Microsoft Publisher 2016
and explain why I have to create a table in Publisher (since Office 2000) and then save it as an image and then paste into Serif PagePlus (or an Affinity App) because
17 years later this feature has been totally IGNORED by the SERIF Development Team ?????
How difficult it can it be to spilt a cell diagonally AFTER desiging apps that run circles around other all these years ?
PLEASE SERIF - actually listen to what customers are asking you for.

Wiredframe got a reaction from Burny in Text disappears after duplicating
At least some of the bugs make me laugh
This happens when repeating a step (CTRL+J)
BTW: The only reason I'm using this beta instead of the stable version is because I mainly design shops and having text align in the vertical middle is the best thing ever invented. I've been waiting for this for years. So thanks!

When it's crashing theres nothing to shut, and the Send Crash Report dialog also doesn't appear.

Wiredframe got a reaction from MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta - 1.6.0.80
Of course. Maybe it's something color profile related. Strangely enough it's working on my home PC but not on my Bootcamp Mac Mini.

Status: Beta Release
Purpose: New features, fixes
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
Mac App Store: Not Submitted
Download: Here
This beta version represents a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.
Fixes/Improvements:
Fix for text appearing blurry while typing. Fix for artistic text creation jumping between different sizes while you drag out a new object. Also added a tooltip next to the cursor to show the size of the text you are about to create. Fix for boolean operations of overlapping areas failing since Beta 5. Fix for fonts not updating correctly when told to reset. Hopefully reduced 'over-eager to serve' behaviour of hidden left and right studio panels. Reduced complexity of the results from 'Expand Stroke' so that they're hopefully more usable. I have not rewritten what it does, just made the result more usable. I will improve this to provide better results on thin strokes for the next beta... Fix for a few OpenType text style bugs. Fix Beta App icons appearing all kinds of crazy colours on macOS High Sierra! Fix for Metal View grid not matching the legacy view's grid when gutter is involved... Added 'Find in Layers Panel' menu item to the 'Layer' menu so that users can assign a shortcut to it for improved workflow. Miscellaneous other tweaks. -
Wiredframe reacted to Zunaid in POLL: Improve Workflow for Web Designers - Official Statement Appreciated
Staying in Affinity Designer and sharing files using plugins/web service like zeplin would be excellent and reduce or stop the need to export files for other apps. It would give Affinity a huge boost in the eyes of UI designers.
I voted 4.

There is no arguing that AD and AP are incredible values. I would gladly pay more $ for faster implementation of tools and updates.

Realy, reall „slow“ updates: Just name a different software product, which is developed faster. Only one!
(I know one, but its – excuse me! – an Adobe product: Muse. But that’s it!)
Software engineering is not a pizza service: order – deliver – eat! (Or is it? If I consider Affinity’ pricing level, it may be the case …!)

I'll add Sketch import soon. I actually already had a .sketch importer that imported their old file format (back when it was using Mac-native file serialisation) but I didn't tell anyone outside the company about it as I figured until our support for multi-lines and fills was working then we couldn't render documents perfectly. Now that they've updated to a very easily parseable solution I'll just have to rewrite it a bit. Our back-end already supports multiple lines and fills, but our UI does not, so we just need to add that ability...
Our PSD, PDF and SVG import/export will always receive updates to improve functionality and compatibility - and our SVG import/export is currently being looked at...
I can't comment on future products and services, but I will suggest to you that you may not need a 'Sketch viewer' or export to Sketch format... and you may be very motivated to stay 'in-house' with Affinity...

Hi Wiredframe, I'm going to move this to the Suggestions and Feedback forum, as this is the Windows Designer Beta forum, which is for bug reports.

Wiredframe got a reaction from lepr in [AD] Replace Symbols and improved Constraints
Recently I stumbled upon the problem that I really needed to replace symbols with other symbols. I couldn't find such a feature unfortunately.
Also although constraints are great it's pretty limited. I can't enter number values but have to drag things around. There's also no option to remove all constraints properties form a selection.
What I really would wish for Affinity Designer is a more technical approach how UI Design works. Like I've seen in an other tool two layout modes would be great: Freeform and Computed. While freeform works like we know, computed elements would float left / top and collapse accordingly and would have a relation to each other (like when I resize a box above another box, the position of that box changes). Also defining relationships between elements like "this box always has a 20px top margin" would be awesome.
Would love to hear about your thoughts.

Hi tomasnosek,
Thanks for the file and screenshot. I've been able to reproduce your issue but i'm not sure of what's causing it. I'm going to pass this to the dev team and someone will get/report back to you soon. Thanks for for letting us know about it.
