Wiredframe got a reaction from dizeyner in Change default grid settings
    Hi everyone,

In 99% of my work I use a 10px grid. I'd really like to set this as the default grid. Instead I have to set it in every new document and every new artboard.

    Thanks in advance  ;)  ;)

PS: Also it would be awesome to always open the document color palette when opening a file that has one.

    Hi Jim Roelofs,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Affinity Designer 1.7 will bring considerable improvements to grids/guides. We have a small team here, please bear with us while we work on those improvements/close the gaps.

Over the past periods, various users (including myself) have put in questions, feature requests and what not a number of times in the forums pertaining to the Ruler & Guides.
Particularly the moveable zero point of the rulers, and the color of the guides has been an issue from the first version of Affinity Designer & Photo.

Unfortunately until now, apparently with the release of a new MAS version imminent, it appears these issues have not been solved yet.
I realise that it will take a lot of developer's work, but it is truly a serious drawback in using the programs.

Nevertheless, I respectfully re-submit my -and others' - remarks about the Drawing Aids, in the hope that they will be updated ASAP.

    Here they are :

    RULERS :

Moveable zero point. This would also go a ways to answering the feature request for a measuring tool.

    GUIDES :
Choice of color, so as to be able to set a contrasting color to one's work.
Lock / Unlock guides with the move tool,  irrespective of tool being used
Adjust guides already set with the move tool, irrespective of tool being used.

    GRID :
Choice of color ( for the same reason as the guides)
Perspective grid : drag points (Horizontal  or Vertical simultaneously.

    Thank you.

Wiredframe reacted to MEB in Slow Development Progress of Mac Apps
    Hi Cinelli,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Part of the appealing of the suite is to be available on multiple platforms/be cross-compatible. For someone just using just one platform this may not look that important but for the users/companies using multiple platforms this is a huge advantage. It also helps strengthen the presence of the suite on the market which will end up be beneficial for everyone and for its development in the long term. Besides being cross-platform all apps share a common file format/base which helps switching/editing documents between them. For all this to work they must be developed in sync whenever possible. Saying that nothing gets finished is a little unfair. New features are simply being added as development permits - which is what selecting by attributes is (to pick your example). None of the apps on the market started with all possible features available from start and although that particular feature wasn't added yet there were others that got implemented during this time. Serif does the best to improve the apps as fast as possible but there's no point in rushing features just to get them outside quicker if their quality suffers as a consequence. Version 1.7 will add quite a few more improvements to the suite. Bear with us while we get there.

I bought Affinity Designer (and then Photo) fairly early on. The apps were early days in terms of features and stability, but I was excited by the potential they had to be true Photoshop and Illustrator competitors. Updates were big and arrived often.

But then an iPad version was announced being in development and I noticed that progress on the Mac apps was noticeably slowing. Now a Publisher app has been announced, yet we don't even have a bugfix update for Designer 1.6 which came out almost 4 months ago. I know that work is being done on the Mac apps, but it feels like it must be a skeleton crew at this point. From a customer perspective it feels like Serif may have bitten off too much, and the original apps are suffering.

If this is a question of needing more revenue coming in, I'd be happy to pay more often for updates because I still believe in the potential of the products. But right now Designer and Photo for the Mac feel more like they're playing 2nd or even 3rd fiddle to the iPad and other Affinity projects. I use Designer mainly for UI design and it feels like there are less and less reasons to stick with it given the competition in that space. And I don't want to have to make that choice.

Wiredframe got a reaction from Capocha in POLL: Improve Workflow for Web Designers - Official Statement Appreciated
I just wanted to recap the current state of how Affinity Designer is performing in web design workflows.

I'm using Affinity Designer since one year for all of my work and I love the application itself. But as of now there is no complete workflow to handout designs made in AD to developers in any way:

    1. Neither Zeplin nor Avocode support AD and it doesn't seem that anthying will change here.
    2. Affinity Designer supports PSD Export but has two major drawbacks: Border radius properties are not preserved and text layers are completely flattened which make them completely useless.
    3. Affinity Designer doesn't support the new open file format of SketchApp to be able to export designs as Sketch files to then inspect them in Zeplin, Avocode, or any other Sketch Viewer.
    4. Exporting to SVG or PDF is not an option either because important properties like border radius, line-height and others are missing.
    5. Right now it doesn't seem that Affinity is adding an inspect persona or any viewer service or app.

So I'd like to ask the Affinity Designer team: What are your goals to improve the workflow for webdesigners and developers? How are you planning to improve this workflow in the future or don't you plan to do anything in this regard? Do you have any suggestion how web designers can work with developers?

I've added a poll so that users can vote which suggestion they like the most.

Wiredframe got a reaction from lepr in [AD] Replace Symbols and improved Constraints
Recently I stumbled upon the problem that I really needed to replace symbols with other symbols. I couldn't find such a feature unfortunately.

Also although constraints are great it's pretty limited. I can't enter number values but have to drag things around. There's also no option to remove all constraints properties form a selection.

What I really would wish for Affinity Designer is a more technical approach how UI Design works. Like I've seen in an other tool two layout modes would be great: Freeform and Computed. While freeform works like we know, computed elements would float left / top and collapse accordingly and would have a relation to each other (like when I resize a box above another box, the position of that box changes). Also defining relationships between elements like "this box always has a 20px top margin" would be awesome.

Would love to hear about your thoughts.

It's a little bit disappointing and frustrating to see that using layers with constraints in symbols leads to total failure. I saved a file and can't even open it anymore. Instant crash.

Wiredframe reacted to JohaWeber in Now that InVisionStudio is about to be released...
    What I think:
The constraints function/panel is not enough to use it as a proper UI design tool or to become a proper design tool. What every UI tool lacks is IMO either a proper HTML(Structure)/CSS(Style)/JS(Animation) export, the "truly responsive"-part or a "multiple states in structure and style for a single UI-element"-part. I could live with at least two of the stated features. I will not add invision studio to my toolset if either they only provide it on a monthly/yearly subscription base or they only provide the tool to mac users. As far as I know none of the statements were made yet - but who knows what a big corporation thinks inside... I wanted to move away from adobe because of the subscription model and couldn't/can't use sketch as a windows user. If they don't get the color workflow for spot colors a lot more easier and keep the professional print production options/features (overprint! spot-color-duotone!) on this level, I don't know why I even should wait for Affinity Publisher to be released. So what's their strategy? In general I think (but hope not) it will turn into the same as GIMP but as a paid product: A quick and easy step into the industry which will be followed by a turn to Adobe for pro users. I also think it would be best to focus on providing a perfect featureset for ADesigner, APhoto and APublisher nearly the same as Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign which then would suit Illustrators, Photographers and DTP-Pros and create a standalone UI app which just integrates in the Affinity universe. Without compatibility for plugins created by users/companies both Affinity Suite and inVision Studio will not succeed the way Sketch or Adobe does. It's the same with every "closed-for-plugins" tool: Looks great, works fine - until you get to the point were the idea is in your head, was approved by your team/client and you're not able to realize it because of the limitations of the tool itself. So you move on to the next one or back where you came from because you can't write your plugin or buy a plugin which brings your idea to life in a breeze - yes sure, nearly everthing a plugin in the graphic-design area does can be achieved without it, but only with a high application of time (which is money). And most projects only have a limited amount of hours on their table.

Hi all, I'm using constraints very often and struggle with the very small clickarea, often have to multiple click until i hit them. It would be nice to make the click areas bigger, I think there's enough room for it:
    Thanks in advance!
We could even use the center of both scaling arrows to toggle them both with one click.

The main differences with a subscription model (Adobe-like) are, as far as I can see:
It's not a monthly fee. If you don't want to pay the upgrade to the 2.X version, you still can use the software. The price for the upgrade will most likley be lower that the first time you buy it. Also, consider that we still don't have a release date for the 2.X version, so there are still more free updates on the horizon.
    Best regards!
