Yup! It was the AMD drivers!
I used the AMD cleanup utility and installed the 21.3.1 version.
All of the Affinity programs work now!

Thank you @emmrecs01 and @Alfred for your help! I appreciate it! 😃

    @Vepar
Further to what @Alfred says, exactly which AMD Radeon driver are you running?  The Radeon Adrenaline driver version 21.4.1 produced exactly the same problem for me.  Reverting to 21.3.1 resolved the problem.  (I see there is now version 21.5.1 but I have not installed that so don't know if AMD have found the problem. I know Serif were in contact with them.)
Since you can't actually launch the apps in order to disable Hardware Acceleration this FAQ will show you how to disable it when the apps are closed.

There is an issue with Photo w/DXO PureRAW DNG files (A known issue). It may be tied to the issue that the OP was having. That is the reason I thought I would bring it up. There may be a problem with DNG files in general in Affinity Photo.

I downloaded and opened your file in both the latest release and the latest beta (1065).  No problems in either version.  (I have HWA switched on.)
Seeing that, in your video you used Drag and Drop on your file, I repeated the exercise using that method, having previously used File>Open; again, no problem.

The fact that you seem to have access to surveys implies you are part of the Serif team, or at least cooperate with them on some capacity.
That, combined with the fact you are not ashamed to justify scroll wheel panning the picture vertically in an image editing software is just scary. It scares me to think that someone who has some influence or decisive right is not capable to understand that expected behavior is context dependent.
As someone above me already pointed out, for example in the first person shooter computer games, mouse wheel is usually used to switch weapons. Imagine the jarring situation, where you'd boot up the new PFS game you bought, just to notice that once you get into game, the scrollwheel would pan the player camera vertically, and you'd have to hold some hotkey along with it to actually scroll through the weapons.
This is what I like to call a "Blender" syndrome, although Blender dev team actually got their shit somewhat together since 2.8. Anyway, it's the syndrome of discouraging new users by doing something so basic and so common so wrong, that the user questions quality of the rest of the software. Basically: "If they got something so simple and so standardized so wrong, how can I expected them to get more advanced workflows right?"

emmrecs01 reacted to rawalanche in Why are the Affinity Photo defaults so bad?
    Hi,
I know AP is a very cheap software, but I feel like there's almost seemingly a conscious effort to actually make it feel like a cheap software. Especially when it comes to UI defaults. It almost feels like whoever is in charge of the UI wants to let anyone looking for a Photoshop alternative very quickly know that "Hey, this is not Photoshop and it will never replace it."
I'd describe it as a "Kick in the nuts" first experience.
Why are there jarring things like mouse wheel scrolling vertically instead of zooming by default? Why do tools cycle by default and require settings flip to actually make them stop doing that.
When it comes to defaults, the rule of a thumb is that "If there's default that more than 50% of people change, it's the wrong default"
Why is the right panel layout so incredibly messy out of the box?
Why are the default keyboard shortcuts so poor and lacking?
Why do absolutely trivial things like adding a filter or picking a color always designed to take at least one or more two clicks? Why can't I just pick the color? Why do I have to pick the color and then click some intermediate color swatch to actually make that active color?
I mean look at fill tool (Shift+F5).
    In PS:
    1. Hold down the alt key to pick foreground color
    2. Select the area to be filled
    2. Press fill hotkey, done.

    In AP:
    1. Select the area to be filled
    2. Press hotkey to open the UI
    4. Another key press to open the color selector, cause it doesn't use the active color swatch
    5. Extremely clumsy click and drag operation on the color picker icon to start picking the color
    6. Move the cursor to pick the color
    7. Click the damn temporary color picker swatch to actually use the picked color (Seriously, WTF at this point?)
    8. One more click outside of the color selector to dismiss it!
    9. Finally, click apply. Done.
    This is So. Incredibly. Slow!

Similar thing applies to the Adjustments panel for example. It's superior to adjustments button in the Layers panel, as it has nice icons that can guide you to the filter you are seeking much faster, but once you click it, you don't actually get the damn filter active. Instead, you get a list of presets, and even though in most cases there's just one, (Default), you still have to perform additional click to actually activate the filter. There is no option to disable the Adjustment layer preset UI so that they can actually be accessed with a single click.
There are traps like this scattered all over the AP. So this leaves me confused.
Serif is in an unique position to take over a big chunk of the market from Adobe, yet it seems like they are almost intentionally paying group of people to actively sabotage this advantage by consciously making the out of the box "first contact" experience with their software as bad as possible.
There must be at least one person solely dedicated to figure out how to perform the simplest of tasks with as many clicks and UI interactions as possible. There's that guy who's job task is "This is $30 software, so you make damn sure it actually feels like that."

@more2021: There are certainly enough Affinity users here waiting for their personally sought-after features. Me too.
But: Good software is not programmed in a short time.
You have to recognize several dependencies, work out concepts for meaningful data and file structures. You can't expand a programming team by doubling it up to do new functions in less time, because new colleagues also have a learning curve and there also block the older team members a bit because they have to show the new colleagues how things work.
Not all things can be solved with money alone.
I have been working with Affinity products since version 1.6. Updates come regularly, but not so often that it's annoying.
In other words, the updates are stable and have been tested, so they don't have to be constantly improved.
I think Affinity is on the right track with their product strategy: A more thorough and reliable development of their software makes customers happier than the provision of faster and dirtier (= faulty) solutions.
It's okay to pay for mayor releases. But to see the user as a cash cow, as Adobe is doing, is the wrong way to go. A subscription model is good if you earn money with the software. But if, like me, you only do something occasionally or work with it on a voluntary basis, then a subscription is simply too expensive. In this respect, Affinity is on the right track here too.

Please stop giving advice to others, because it's a waste of energy, and you probably won't even appreciate it. Instead, start your own business, develop applications such as APh, ADe and APub (or others, your ambitions are certainly much higher), quickly implement all the necessary and cool functions into them, and sell them for 1000 or more €, which users will certainly be happy to pay. OK?

    Ahoi Team!
Over the last years dozens of people have purchased your products, AD and AP by name, due to my recommendation: "The same or even better than PS or AI. The little what´s missing will come fast, trust me."
But i´m stuck with you. Quite embarrassing right, well, now?
Announcements and promises over YEARS and YEARS, i don´t know where to start. So many missing and often asked features (snoop around your own and other forums [fora, to be correct]): What is the value of an alternative to PS and AI, when i am regularly forced to go back for common simple tasks?
Guys, take € $ 50.- or 100.- or 150.- again from me and 10.000s others and get this thing working. OK? And do it fast.
    Thx, KW
p.s.: I´m sure, that all owners will be OK with an extra payment from time to time. Declare and just be honest: "We need more money to beat the evil forces. Things develop, so must we, what is costly". Everyone will understand.
I had the same task with my product: Too cheap. I doubled the price and i´m selling more than before. Placement.
25.- by discount? 3kg of somewhat good bread cost more. Don´t fool yourself: A real PS and AI alternative has to be more costly. No problem. Try my advice and get funds by owners (please no novel, just the truth in simple words - two lines) and raise the price.
But you have to deliver: Make huuugggee anouncements and implement the stuff real quickly. OK?

I posed a simple question two days ago and no replies, then buried in a thousand other questions with no way to see easily if my post had any replies. There are reasons why people pay Adobe many dollars per year for the usurious Photoshop and Illustrator subscriptions: their products are not dog meat.

It may be old fashioned, but I was always told, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.”  Otherwise known as, let the person tell you if he or she uses or prefers a nickname or a shortened version.  A person’s name belongs to that person.  It shouldn’t be the property of others to change without permission, no matter on which side of which lake, river, or ocean one resides.  Reading James Ritson’s name shortened above to “Jim” set my teeth on edge.  Where, precisely,  did James call himself Jim?

That’s absolutely fine, but (just as one shouldn’t assume that Ron is short for Ronald or that Jack is a nickname for John) one shouldn’t assume that an Alfred is happy to be addressed as Al, Alf, or Alfie, or that a William will be unperturbed by being addressed as Bill, Will, or Willie.

    @Dan C
I can happily confirm that reverting the Radeon driver and software version from the latest 21.4.1 to 21.3.1 resolves the issue completely!  (And I did reverse the changes to the PerformanceSettings.xml documents as in the previously mentioned FAQ.)
In the end, didn't use that DDU tool but merely selected the option on the Radeon Installer screen to carry out a factory reset/clean up of earlier installations.  Perhaps that has helped in this problem and would help other users experiencing it?

emmrecs01 got a reaction from Dan C in ALL Affinity apps crash immediately on attempting to open them
    @Dan C
Yes, I believe it is the same issue.  I am running the latest release of the AMD drivers (Adrenaline edition) and am about to remove them, using the DDU tool, and then revert to the earlier version.
Using the advice given in this FAQ I disabled Hardware Acceleration and could then open the apps.
Once confirmed that reverting to the earlier Radeon driver has resolved the problem I will send a bug report to AMD.
