I once had to import a bunch of PDF files into PagePlus. I did not open them in PagePlus. I opened them in PDF-XChange Viewer, copied and pasted the text, and flowed that through a story in a copy of one of my previous PagePlus books, which I used as a template for the layout. Finding and replacing all of the carriage returns and applying paragraph styles was tedious, but still a lot easier than fixing a PDF file opened in PagePlus. Do think again about importing WritePlus files if you want any of your old Serif customers to migrate to Affinity Publisher. There is currently not one good reason: Publisher has fewer features, has a fairly steep relearning curve, and does not even import RTF satisfactorily. Recreating index marks, footnotes, cross-references, and inline graphics is just too much work to make it worth trying.

Whether with Romanian characters or with regular English characters, the text cursor moves to the left when moving word left with Ctrl+Left, and to the right when moving word right with Ctrl+Right. This is different behaviour to other Serif software, where the text cursor always moves to the left of the next letter, never to the right of it.

Decoding of characters

Look in preferences to disable Autocorrect for smart quotes, but then you lose the benefit of Typographical punctuation.- 6 replies

Decoding of characters
Bhikkhu Pesala replied to Pierre Beljean's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
The mark that you get when you type ' looks like a close single quote mark used in some languages. Do you also get ‹ when typing ' before a word? If so, this looks like the expected behaviour for smart quotes.- 6 replies

Is the ~ key a dead key? Try ~ then n and see if you get ñ or ~ a to get ã I reported a bug in this thread, but no one replied.- 6 replies

Multi-page table?
Bhikkhu Pesala replied to CliveH's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
In PagePlus X9, tables can autoflow between pages, either horizontally (columns) or vertically (rows). -
I use a heavily modified Extended UK Windows keyboard for typing Pali and other languages. It uses dead keys for typing accented characters, e.g. for letters with Cedilla accent, the dead key is Ctrl+Alt+Comma to type Ç, ç, Ş, ş, Ţ, ţ and so on. The latter do not work in Publisher, though they work find in PagePlus, and in my Vivaldi Browser, Notepad, etc. Shift _ dead key works fine fof Ā, ā, Ī, ī, Ū, ū in Publisher Ctrl+Alt+" dead key for Ä, ä, Ë, ë, etc. does not work in Publisher Shift ^ dead key for circumflex works fine Shift ~ dead key for tilde for Ã, ã, Ñ, ñ works fine Ctrl+Alt+^ dead key for caron Ǎ, ă does not work in Publisher There seems to be a pattern emerging here.

You need to spend more time designing your own fonts, and less time finding fault with what others do. Then you might understand how complex the issue is. There is already a thread discussing precedence of OpenType features on the High-Logic forum. It is not worth my time to discuss this. Life is too short; others can lose sleep over it if they wish. When you can do better, we will offer some critique of your fonts, but only if you request it.

I see no check for updates on the Help menu. Is checking for updates automated?

Show this page on startup text is invisible for me. I can only read it by opening the screenshot in IrfanView and adjusting the Gamma The red text for 20% discount is also hard to read. I use the light interface, and I am colour-blind. Also, the About box is so tiny and the contrast so poor that the EULA text is impossible to read. Accessibility is important.

I tried in PPX9 to change the hyphenation hot zone on a paragraph with a runt (a single word on the last line). It made no difference at all. I could manually force a second word to the last line with a hard space, but this adds excessive spacing to the penultimate line. What works effectively, and what I have used for years, is to reduce the tracking by small increments of 0.1% until the last word fits on the previous line, or to increase the tracking until more words move to the last line of the paragraph. With shortcuts, it's not too tedious for a book of 100 or fewer pages, but it would be much better to have a way to automate the process. Format, Justification, Letter-spacing, Minimum/Maximum does this fairly well. I forget what the default is, but I set mine to 97% and 103%.

It is indeed just a zip archive containing a few xml files and images. Although I am sure it would not be beyond the ability of any decent coder to create an import filter, this is best done by Serif as they are familiar with the file structure and know all of the different kinds of objects and styles it can contain. An imported *.stt file contains inline images, footnotes, index references, and TOC anchors.

Almost a year now since I posted the above, and we are still waiting for the first Beta. Here's hoping it has some way to import stories from PagePlus, or it will be useless to me. Rebuilding from PDF files is not viable for my publications, which are mostly for books with footnotes, contents, and indexes. The latter could soon be regenerated, but adding footnotes to a plain text stream is very time-consuming.

Colour font support would set Affinity Publisher apart from the competition. PhotoShop supports SVG Colour fonts, but not OpenType (AFAIK). Some browsers already support colour fonts.

Affinity Publisher As A Word Processor?
Bhikkhu Pesala replied to - S -'s topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
WritePlus is just about right for this purpose. Provide support for that format within Affinity Publisher, and make a standalone application too. -
I think that Serif could and should improve on importing only PDF files. For posters, menus, or greeting cards it would be fine. For books, the flow of text between pages is crucial. I don't think it would be hard to provide an import filter for WritePlus files, which contain styles, footnotes, inline graphics, and index marks. The screen shot below is of a long WritePlus *.stt file exported from one of my books, and imported into a blank new document. Reflowing the text in a new Affinity Publisher document, then adding other content like master pages, tables, calendars, freely floating graphics, etc., would be relatively simple.

Character Variants not Working
Bhikkhu Pesala replied to Bhikkhu Pesala's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on Windows threads
When I first designed my fonts, I used the Initial Forms feature for Decorative Drop Caps. Microsoft changed the description of this feature, so although they still work in PagePlus, etc., they are enabled by default in Affinity Designer and cannot be disabled. I therefore replaced the Initial Forms with Stylistic Alternates. I tried Contextual Alternates, but that is also enabled by default. The Stylistic Sets were already in use, so I changed these to Character Variants. These are disabled by default, which is better than calt. This discussion on High-Logic refers.
