buschbrand reacted to Hangman in Working with Pantone colors - palette annoyance
    Hi ericGa,
The colour palettes are one area where I personally feel a major overhaul is needed as the way they currently function is relatively unintuitive, cumbersome and restricted. I'm hoping now Publisher has been released and once the dust settles on the bug front that some focus is placed on refining areas which are currently not so strong across the apps, colour palettes being one of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the suite of apps and use them daily for commercial work, I just feel now is a time for some further refinement so they can go from being amazing to even more amazing :-)
With regards your issue I agree, the current behaviour makes little sense, you select a Pantone colour by clicking on it and for some reason, a new Document Palette is automatically created and the Pantone colour added as a Global Colour, why? If you click on a second Pantone colour that behaviour is not repeated!
To add additional colours to this newly, if unrequested palette you can return to the Pantone swatches and then select another swatch, then select your document palette from the drop down and click one of the two icons to the right of the Palette name, the first adds the selected swatch using the Pantone Name, the second icon adds the colour as a Global Colour but it is crazy having to switch between the Pantone Swatch and your Document Palette constantly to add colours to your Document Palette one by one.

Improvements I'd Like to See to Colour Palette Functionality in All Three Affinity Apps
I would like to see the ability to Shift and/or Cmd/Ctrl-click multiple swatches from any of the colour palettes, right click and select 'Add to Palette' with the option to select which palette you'd like to add the swatches too and once added for those colours to retain their correct name, e.g. Pantone Colour Name. Global colours added to a palette should retain their default name if for example a Pantone or named colour, rather than being called Global Colour 1 etc., which is meaningless and simply results in you then having to laboriously rename the global colours by their actual name, again, why? When importing an AD, AP, APub, PDF, EPS or SVG file into any of the three apps, for a default document colour palette to be created that includes the colours used in the imported file, so if you for example import a PDF or EPS file that has been generated in InDesign or any other software, a new document colour palette should automatically be created that includes the imported colours and lists them correctly by name/Pantone Name. I'm pretty sure Illustrator and InDesign do this but it's a long time since I used either. These would be my ideals for starters, I think there are many other improvements that can and will hopefully be made to the colour palettes over time...
Anyone else have suggestions they'd like to see?

I love Hawaiian Shirts and tropical und floral patterns. It's not that perfect and just »work in progress «– but I like it. Some shadows have to be refined and some textures may be added. No Stock-Pictures are used and lots of hours were spent to draw all parts of it.
I don't know what to do with it. In my dreams it becomes a shirt. What do you think?

Often when reading emotional comments, I wonder whether the author is upset about the product - or about himself.
You can separate yourself from a product you do not like (even if it means you wasted 50 bucks and some lifetime on it), but you can’t separate from yourself.
So if the thread owner now feels better and can watch into the mirror again, maybe it was worth the posting here. I just dislike a basic tone of disrespect, putting oneself above all others, be it developers, other users or helpful minds here in the forum.

My main complicated drawings are taking ages so I thought I would work on a few easier ones at the same time. This is the first to be finished.
For me Gulf Racing is the most iconic colour scheme in motor racing and I’ve been meaning to do a 917 but never got around to it until now. Unsurprisingly there aren’t a whole lot of overhead shots of it so this was based on photos of the 1:8 scale die cast model by Amalgam Collection. Very high end, about £10k but bespoke can apparently cost up to £120k. Not something to let the kids play with.
On the Porsche 917K’s public debut at the 1970 Daytona 24 Hours, John Wyer's Gulf-sponsored team finished 1-2 in the race. The winning number 2 car driven by Pedro Rodríguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman broke the distance record by 190 miles.

buschbrand reacted to KariLiz in COLOR: Looks fine. Prints horrible.
In changing to Affinity Designer from Illustrator I have one *major* issue. It's been a problem for months.
My labels for my biz have been absolutely horrible and I need this fixed. I was printing my illustrator files from affinity.
Turns out I can't even print a black tint properly from Affinity.
Instead of going through the entire story, I'll sum up the issue.
    Basics:
    - Older Computer, windows 7, Illustrator cs 5.5.
    - New Computer, Windows 10, Affinity Designer (updated)
    - Printer: HP color laserjet 2025dn (same for both computers)
    - Colors look fine on the screen for both.
    - Created a file in Affinity Designer. Made 3 boxes using ONLY tints of black. They don't print grey... they're green.
Exported the file to a PDF. Prints green using new and old computer.

    - Created a file in my old Illustrator. Made 3 boxes using ONLY tints of black. They print properly.
    Saved a PDF.
    - Opened PDF on new computer, printed it... it prints properly.
    - Opened the PDF in Affinity. Looks fine. *Prints green*
Please someone have a reason for this. I realize colors aren't perfect from screen to printer, but this is beyond being able to work with...
I can't even print a greyscale from affinity. No wonder all my files from Illustrator look ridiculous printed out now.
I tried to take a pic to help demonstrate the issue... hopefully it shows how GREEN a black tint is coming out.
Again, looks fine on the screen. And it seems to be with just Affinity.
Please and thank you. I'm losing my dang mind.

buschbrand reacted to rumo in Feature feedback one month after dropping Indesign CC for Publisher
    Dear Serif team,
after a decade solely with Adobe products, I switched to Publisher a month ago. I already tested the demo when it was first introduced and really wanted to get rid of Adobe for years, but I missed the IDML import feature that came with Publisher’s latest upgrade. I immediately batch converted all of my Indesign files with a script and dropped my CC subscription. With no regrets. I’m a freelance typographer and graphic designer focused on print media and I think Publisher is the better software here. Especially when considering it is not backed by a billion dollar company.
Yet there are still some bugs as well as features that I miss in my professional workflow. Here are some of them:
I miss integrated access to other spot color libraries such as HKS (not only Pantone) as HKS is a European standard Starting every print document with the cmyk color palette, every web document with the RGB palette etc. And, of course, every saved document with its document color palette. I think the color register is overall missing some logical structure as it is not clear why there are document, system and program palettes. I made my own HKS palette, but only when I import it as a document palette I can use it throughout the software, not only in the current document. That’s confusing. I miss that the pipette can copy styles. I miss the option to rotate the page view of a single page. When I make a layout in portrait mode but have a page that is in landscape mode by design, I really don’t want to turn my head or my display. I miss hotkeys to control how images are display within their containers (min-fit, max-fit etc.). There’s software like Capture One where I can apply a hotkey to literally every function. I am not sure why this shouldn’t be possible in Publisher, too. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate how you treat us folks in this time of crisis.
    Cheers,
    Johannes

buschbrand reacted to rui_mac in Feature Request - Alpha Channels (AGAIN!)
This was requested and talked about before, but here goes again.
Spare Channels don't behave as simple additional alpha channels.
When I create a new Spare Channel, specially if it is created out of a color channel, I expect it to behave just like a color channel, except that it describes "luminosity" or "opacity/transparency" information.
But I assume I could still use all painting/editing tools on it. Stuff like brush, dodge, burn, smear, blur, etc. Also, Levels, Curves, Brightness/Contrast, or any filter.
In effect, a Spare Channel should be treated as an additional greyscale image, and I should be able to deal with it exactly like it was a simple greyscale image.
I could, after editing it (again, like a regular greyscale image), decide if I want to use the luminosity information as a mask or simply load it as a selection or whatever.
BUT, PLEASE, make spare channels work like regular greyscale images inside the document, and not like a "special transparency information type of thing".
Professional editors need to be able to create complex masks and we need to be able to use all the available tools to do so.

Serif generally won't say when the release will occur.
I will mentiont that they are still implementing new functions (e.g., the New file dialog is quite recent on Windows, and support for Photoshop Smart Objects was just made available), as well as fixes for problems. And they just released the first beta for Photo on iPad (none yet for Designer on iPad).
So I would expect it's still going to be awhile (1-2 months?), but that's just a guess. And sometimes they have surprised me
