I have noticed Designer using significantly longer when shutting down - only sometimes - showing the beach ball for surprisingly long. Then after many seconds it finally terminates by itself.

If you have a very large amount of data on the Clipboard it takes a while for Designer to purge/clear that from the clipboard when you shut down. One of the quirks of working with the Affinity Suite.

BTW, somewhere I seem to remember a post or Spotlight article or some such, I think by @MEB, that discussed various ways to make documents easier to export to JPEG without losing much noticeable quality, but I can't find it now.

Well my favourite trick is to apply a tiny amount of Gaussian Blur before exporting. On the order of 0.1 to 0.3 pixels. Obviously this is done to a Pixel layer made by Merging the Visible and exporting that blurred Pixel layer. The savings in file size can be quite large.

I’m entering a competition next week, and need to upload my submission in JPEG form through the “Zealous” website. They have a maximum image size of 4mb, and the minumum file size I get when I export presently is 70.4mb (it’s quite a large and complex piece with a great many layers).

What are the Pixel dimensions of the Designer document and also the JPEG which is exported. It may be that you have a file that is too large in Pixels.

    Still a bug, though, right?

    I would say yes.

they are actually stacked on top of each other, and I can’t see how to show all the tabs.

Good catch. I too cannot figure out how to get the tabs to show. I most likely won't spend much time on this as I never actually work like that. I use File > Open...

In the Layer menu, there is no shortcut shown for New Layer (new vector Layer).  In the settings, under Shortcuts, there is a default of Option-Command-N on the Mac.  However, when I type that, it creates a new document, with some default presets.

Actually it creates a new document with the last used settings.

Good catch. I cannot find where the Command + Option + N for the (I guess default or hardwired) New document with previous settings is set.

When I make a new document, and place a plain svg from Inkscape, in all previous versions of Designer [v1881 and below] I can double click on the imported svg which opens a new window in which I can do color and style fills.

In version 1954- I cannot get to a window that allows any editing of the placed svg.

Is the SVG place as Linked or Embedded?

Yes @Old Bruce, it is turned on in the Text Frame and I believe also in the text style (there is a – in the box Align to Baseline Grid).

The - in the box Align to Baseline Grid means the value is inherited from whatever that text style is based on. You can have it checked or unchecked for explicit On Off setting or - for [No Change] or as I call it Inherited. I would clear it for this or go up in the Based on and uncheck it there.

Myself for the most part I turn it off in the very top level and set my leading to Exact values. Only because that is how I learned to set type. I had to use physical strips of lead which were 1 or more points thick between the lines of lead letters on a stick. No fractional or percentages leading doing that.

Yes. What I mean is that I highlight text that I notice needs spacing between the lines. I open the Paragraph Panel and change the leading but the text does not change. No increase (or decrease) in the leading. I then open the Text Styles panel and edit the relevant text style hoping this will solve the problem. I go to Position & Transform tab and increase/change the leading from there. Nothing happens. Text remains the same. Too squishy. If/when problem happens again, I will try to have video.

Do you have Align to Baseline turned on? in the Text Style, in the Text Frame or for the Document.

  9. In an attempt to further muddy the waters; Instead of Migrated or Promoted how about Transferred To.

This is as good a place as any to remind people to name each and every layer/item on the Master Pages with sensible unique names. Left Page Number, Left Page Header, Left Main Text, Middle Picture, Middle Picture Caption, Background Picture, etc. Use the exact same names on the various Master Pages as applicable.

To insert glyphs/Unicode characters directly using Hex code:

    1. Click for an insertion point in the text.
    2. Do one of the following:
      • For a glyph: Type 'G+' then enter the Hex code, e.g. '02F5' or '2F5'.
      • For a Unicode character: Type 'U+' then the Hex code, e.g. '0040', '040' or '40'.

    3. with your text caret at the end of the "code" ) meaning the after the 5 in G+02F5) hit the Toggle Unicode keyboard shortcut Control + U

how should I prepare my files for linked file workflow (instead of embedded)

Most important have all your files on your computer, not in the cloud, not on a networked hard-drive.

how to do a good project folder for all 3 products.

Again, do not use the cloud or networked hard-drives. I set up a folder/directory structure with folders/directories for the three applications plus folders/directories for any none Affinity files as well. This is inside the Main Project folder. The Illustrations folder holds the Photo and Designer files as well as the TIFFs generated from those documents. I make use of symbolic links to link folders full of TIFFs into the Illustrations folder as well, on Mac these are quite similar to the Finder's Alias files.

    1. It's both. Firstly, I see no reason whatsoever, why a comma should be in the beginning of next line, that simply doesn't make sense.
    2. Secondly, this is my design decision to keep the red text in the middle of the block of black text and not in the beginning or end. I'd like to have any red element from the text clearly visible, which is done best, if it's in the middle of the paragraph, so it cannot optically "blend together" with the red frame or anything else. Therefore I wanted to have the NBSP between them, so it gets divided like "sva-tého N."

For 1. I too don't understand why the comma is being wrapped to the start of the next line. I can think of no typographic rule which would allow this to happen. The only thing I can think of is that the period/dot after the N is overriding a "good sense" rule that is already in place. Meaning that the red period/dot is considered as a full stop and for some reason the writer/author has decided to start a new sentence with a comma.

For 2. I have to say that that is quite a requirement you have set up for the text (red text to be away from the frame edge). I doubt that it is something that could be automated. I think you would have to search for the Red Text and then, where necessary, apply the Character panel's No Break to a selection of text that includes the Red Text and the preceding black text's final character all the way to the first black text character after the Red Text.

Obviously if Publisher would include a rule for no line starting with a comma then things would work out better. Still wouldn't fix your Red Text rule though.
