AP & AD are definitely not toys, this is kind of ridiculous. I worked so many years with adobe products and affinity's software is simply outstanding for this price. Don't forget how many customers are satisfied about this great product. Sure, there are always many things to improve, but this is a small company and what they have done so far deserves a lot of respect!

I get that my question may come across as crass, but the reasoning is actually much less entitled than it seems. I literally only need the two features I listed above, everything else in this software could be left as is and I wouldn't mind, because it works perfectly fine for my purposes. I think that speaks volumes about the top notch quality of the work done by the team, especially for a software this young. :)

That's a general observation: it would be good to have both a method to achieve a persistence of settings as well as a way to reset them, possibly selective, even if that is per session rather than completely.

BatteriesInc reacted to calerius in Update assets?
My team and I have changed from Illustrator to AD and have begun to import all of our assets. Is there any chance that we can expect updates on assets any time soon? We are going to export the asset file every time we make changes, but when we import it this will become it's own category of assets. I would love to have the option to replace the category if it has the same name.

Would also love to be able to change an assets, as I understand it now we would need to delete it from the panel and then create a new one.

    Hello everybody,

I've created this double bill poster of Laurel & Hardy. This year marks the 125 years anniversary of Stan Laurel's birthday. These two movies are coming to the big screen in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Using my sketch as a guide I created this poster completely in AD. This is my first larger artwork in AD.

The first release of AD was a bit too unstable to me, but much has improved since the update. So, I'm very pleased working with this piece of software.

BatteriesInc reacted to DarkClown in AP / AD standard path settings
    Hi Affinity staff,
I'm well aware this topic has been brought up before but just let me put it into a defined question again:
AP/AD does not save preferred pathes and setting. One constantly has to enter own standard pathes and setting over and over again. I'm quite aware this topic requires some reasonable effort since it affects so many settings within the programs. But on the other side it is a nightmare for any professional user entering these things again an again. Starting from standard file pathes that need to be available at startup, pathes that have been entered the last time, and should be maintained, standard export settings that should be defined and saved altered if changed ... the list is quite long and I guess you are aware of it ...

Is there any plan to adapt the software to these essential settings at all? Is this scheduled still in the 1.5 version? Can you give any estimated point of implementation? I'm aware that everybody is asking for features ... but please don't forget the workflow ...  there are people trying to work with the software - on a daily base ... more than occasional users ... and I hope you try to address them with you SW as well ;-)

    Cheers, Timo

I usually do cut-outs in Photoshop using the pen tool by defining the shape to cutout over a mask layer then specifying the feather radius via right click options of the pen tool & filling it with the background color (Black) to hide away (mask) the selections. I find this difficult to achieve in AP where it has to be done in several steps which is quite annoying specially the feather option has to be typed over & over each time you need to apply feathering. I hope you can simplify this similar to Photoshop.

    Hi Huelo,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
If you select the Node Tool and go to the context toolbar Action section, there's an icon - Smooth Curve (third icon) - that may help a little in some situations, but it doesn't do/clean as much as you'd expect. This has been requested quite a few times and we hope to implement it later in a future version.

Many, many moons ago, I used Fractal Design Painter (now Corel Painter) and it had a nice feature called "image hose," that sounds very much like what you're asking for, only it dealt strictly with bitmapped designs. Being able to spray vector objects would be great in AD or AP!

    Hello,
I now worked way over 200 hours with AD, great Tool for UI Design. But one thing that really could be improved is the font rendering, especially for UI Design. Most of my Designs are for WPF Applications. It would be really great if the developers would improve the rendering. The fonts in AD just look very blury. I really would wish some presets. The "Curve-Tool" is in my opinion useless, I was not able to get any satisfying results.

See the attachment with the comparison of WPF Rendering, Photoshop and Affinity Designer.

BatteriesInc reacted to Peter Werner in Improved Gradient Map feature
The current Gradient Map feature is quite basic like the one in Photoshop, but in many ways, it could be a much more useful tool with the following additions:

HSL Mode: Instead of going based only on Luminance, this would use the input hue or saturation as the lookup index. In combination with HSL blend modes, this would allow for some fantastic workflows like basically warping the color wheel to taste, similar to the "HSL Wheels" feature in Magic Bullet Colorista (Note: don't be fooled by the name of the feature, this is NOT referring to the three-way color corrector). Just use a gradient of the HSL spectrum and drag or re-define stops, set the result to "Hue" blend mode, and you have an extremely powerful color correction tool that gives you results that would be difficult to achieve in any other way.
Circular Editor Option: Like the Colorama filter built-into in After Effects, this makes it easy to work on maps that are supposed to start and end with the same color. In combination with an input for a number of revolutions (cycles) to use, this would also make it easy to create gradient effects where a few stops are repeated multiple times across the spectrum (like, say, alternating black-white-black-white). This would also massively improve usability in conjunction with the HSL mode option suggested above.
Access to swatches: This would make it easy to re-use gradients by defining them or recalling them from swatches as an alternative to using Adjustment Presets.
Interpolation control: Sometimes the transition from one color to the next needs fine-tuning – this is something that Affinity's gradient editor already supports, but not in the Gradient Map dialog. A Constant Interpolation setting where the color would just be constant up until the next stop would also be useful since it would eliminate the need for duplicate stops in the same position, which are really hard to select. Possibly, the curve editor could also be re-used to define falloff using a Bézier or Catmull-Rom-Spline.
Duplicate Stop option: Often, it is necessary to use the same color multiple times in a gradient. Adding a button for this and/or enabling Option+Drag to duplicate would be useful. Photoshop aggravatingly always inserts new stops with the same color instead of the color that is already there at that position in the gradient, but the (better) implementation of this in Affinity had the side effect that duplicating stops became harder.
On-image sampling: While the dialog box is open, it would be useful to highlight the value under the mouse pointer in the gradient display to be able to place a stop exactly at the desired position. Clicking in the image would insert a stop.
On-image highlighting: Conversely, when editing/dragging a stop in the gradient editor, an option to highlight the affected pixels in the image would be helpful. The options could be: off (nothing) all pixels that have exactly the value represented by the position of the stop (similar to focus peaking) the zone that will be affected in the image. The overlay would start at 100% intensity at the value represented by the stop and fall off to 0% on each side until the position of the next stop respectively, taking the falloff into account (see "Interpolation Control" above). Optionally, two different colors could be used to represent each side of the stop.
Resizable dialog box for more precision: When editing 16-bit images or editing falloff from one stop to the next or when placing stops very close to each other, it would be useful to have more room to work with. Making gradient editor dialog boxes in the application resizable would alleviate this problem.
Snap to Luminosity button: Sometimes, it is useful to place stops exactly at the point in the gradient that corresponds to their luminosity, especially when they are defined by selecting swatches from a color palette. Adding a button that moves all selected stops to that position would make this really quick. For instance, tinting an image with two tones while keeping black and white intact could be achieved very quickly by selecting a black-to-white preset, then adding two stop, selecting a color from the document color palette for each, and clicking that "Snap Selected Stops to Luminosity" button.
Ability to move start and end stops. The values before the first stop and after the last one would simply use constant extrapolation. This would eliminate the need for duplicate stops, which take longer to create and are harder to edit since all operations need to be performed twice.

    Not Affinity's job.

You haven't provided a single good reason for Affinity to do this - your personal dislike of certain operating systems isn't a reason.

BatteriesInc reacted to Crionis in Return to Move tool when esc is hit twice
By hitting escape twice, I'd like to return to the Move tool no matter which another tool I currently have activated. This can be a nice reset shortcut that gets you back to the default selection state. Right now, escape only unselects the object, and that's great. But hitting esc the second time could be used to go even further back and get you back to the Move tool.

I haven't seen it done in any other application, and I understand that some people may not actually like this idea, and I don't see it as crucial or anything. More like a nice workflow addition. Having an option in settings would probably do the trick.

BatteriesInc got a reaction from awhite in Accept both comma and full stop for decimals
    Hi,

Would it be possible to accept both "," and "." as acceptable decimal separator, or give users a choice in the matter?

You typically end up in this situation if your base operating language is English, but your keyboard is not - it then becomes a bit of a guess as to what will happen when you press the "." button on the numeric keypad (yes, some of us like larger keyboards :) ).  Some software will follow system language, some will follow the keyboard language, and typically you have precious little influence in the matter (only  LibreOffice and its NeoOffice derivative have a setting for it in their "Languages" preference).
AD and AP both want a value of 4½ entered as "4.5" (system language), whereas "4,5" is what I end up with using the numerical keypad.  Rather than enter this as a bug and fire off a debate, how about being a bit smarter and develop an input routine that will accept either for numerical values?  I have yet to come across anyone who enters triad separators when keying in a number for data entry.

In case that gets too complicated, could a choice be added to the setup?

    Cheers!
