I have sometimes found the fixed size text frame useful...

Designing the layout for a pamphlet (for example) using frames to define the available space. Then the client provides the text which I can paste into the frame, which now shows just how verbose their wording is, and gives a visual representation of how much they need to cut!

We don't have to do that now (because per user prefs, customizations, etc. are not normally touched during updates). The value I see is when we either have to use any of the reset options that clobber those things; reinstall the app after wiping the hard drive so there are no per user settings remaining, or when installing the app on another machine.

No, that would be dangerous as they may make changes to the structure.  It's good to have a separate directory, but some kind of an import/export option for brushes/styles/tools/whatever would be good because it also helps with a re-install - you just run one export and it's all backed up, and one import and it's all back.  Maybe I should propose that as a feature, possibly tied to the serial number to prevent people mass copying brushes etc.

I'm not having that much time to tinker right now, but is there a way I clone all the presently installed resources of the production version (brushes, styles, whatever) and install it in the beta as if it was an upgrade, or do I have to manually install it all?

    Cheers!

    Status: Beta Release
    Purpose: New features, fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: Here

This beta version represents a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

and well if you are born colorblind, designer isnt the best job and if you werent you should still be able to remember how blue looks when designing and stuff, with the rgc sliders giving you the ability to directly pinpoint a color, also there are probably enough system-wide color blind tools.

Affinity Designer is a drawing program: you create images and designs with it, mainly in vector format so you can scale it to any dimension without loss of quality.  Affinity Photo is a program focused explicitly on photos and their manipulation, ranging a wide range of images from your average PNG or JPG format to RAW, HDR and panorama shots.
The best way to work out what you need is simply download the trial versions and play with them.

    Personally, I didn't make a choice - I got both :P

BatteriesInc reacted to eno in PDF Export: Set bleed manually
When exporting, you can only tick the box for bleed to be included. On an ongoing project, I need to export different formats with different bleed options, i.e. 1mm vs. 3mm bleed. I was used to set a global bleed of 3mm in Illustrator and change the value to my liking when exporting to PDF. With Designer I need to fumble with the document’s bleed in order to change to and fro with 1mm and 3mm. Allowing for setting a bleed size in export settings would save me time again, and make Designer a little niftier than it already is :) .

Well, I wouldn't want to affect a Royal "we", but when it comes to a DAM I must actually agree, there is definitely a "need", also known as a ready market.

There isn't really anything sensible out there that allows you to tag images, manage copyrights (let's not forget that), sort on all sorts of parameters including whatever available EXIF data and even dimensions etc etc etc.  The only other option I see here is some Open Source project which could incorporate things like Graphics/ImageMagick and exiftool for image handling, but I lack the bandwidth to get that organised and keep it from getting mired in pointless politics.

Given past performance of the Affinity team which I enjoy daily with Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo* there is a high degree of confidence that whatever they dream up will be good and innovative too, and they have access to plenty of people here who would love to help with requirements gathering and alpha/beta testing (sticks up hand).  That's probably their only problem: they set the bar pretty high for themselves with AD and AP  :P - my confidence in them delivering something good is only exceeded by my impatience to see it appear  ..

    * They should really come up with some joint license - it's worth having both

The MagSafe ports help to avoid that because the connections are intentionally *weak* - they break free and can simply be plugged back in after that.  With USB-C, we are back to the danger zone.

I must admit that MagSafe does little for me because I have lots of other stuff plugged in which pretty much undoes its benefit.  USB-C has one MAJOR advantage: on a regular Macbook, you'll have 6 of them.  You only need one with an adaptor box (unless you push 4K video through it in which case you better leave some ports exclusively for that), which means you have backup if a port gives up - no need to have it fixed immediately.  Try that with all the Thunderbolt/Displayport/USB/RJ45/HDMI cabling - for mobile use it's now 1 jack or maybe 2 and you're fully docked.

The other advantage is that it normalises the whole power supply malarkey - you don't explicitly need Apple's power supply to get work done.  There are also already a number of PCs with USB-C which opens the peripherals market, and I noticed USB-3 sticks are not as expensive as I feared - you can get dual ones which are USB-C on one side and USB-3 on the other.

In short, if you have existing kit it's annoying to switch.  If you're busy cycling hardware anyway it's not a bad idea.

BatteriesInc reacted to James Ritson in Long Exposure Look?
Hey InfinitePhotos, what dmstraker said is pretty much on the money. It's better to try and achieve this in effect in-camera if possible. You can replicate it in post-production but it's not quite the same. That said, some additional thoughts:
If you're experimenting and don't want to spend a lot of money, search Amazon or eBay for something like an "ND1000" or "ND2000" filter. This will be a strong neutral density filter in a screw thread which you can just attach to the front of your lens. You can also get cheap variable ND filters but you'll likely find the strongest point is practically unusable because the two circular discs will meet and produce horrible vignetting. If you're definitely after long exposures, a strong, fixed strength filter is usually the way to go. You can also try the other type of filter - square filters held in front of the lens by a bracket. Beware though that the cheap ones really are cheap - you'll typically get colour casts and contrast reduction that's very hard to combat in post. For square filters you'll probably want Lee/Rollei/Cokin etc. In combination with the ND filter, you'll want to use the lowest ISO possible (some cameras extend lower than the base ISO at the expense of dynamic range, so be careful using those settings) and stop your lens down to a reasonable f-number. Using a stronger filter means you can avoid stopping down all the way to f/11 and smaller, which can often introduce diffraction and soften your image. Many cameras will limit the longest exposure time to 60s or 30s - to get around this, you can shoot several of these long exposures then stack them in Photo using a Mean/Median operator to make it look like a much longer exposure. See the Big Stopper Effect tutorial for an example of this. The astrophotography Star Trail Effect tutorial, whilst a different subject, also highlights the use of stacking long exposures and then blending them.
Not sure which iPad tutorial you watched? I haven't done a long exposure/big stopper one yet ;) - maybe it was the sky replacement video?

I expected this question. Printing an SVG from AD to a PDF printer driver eliminates all SVG transformations like e.g. clippings. I.e. the resulting PDF looks like it is displayed in AD but without using inherent transformations. This process is called "FLATTENING". At the end of the whole batch process, the result is a flattened SVG file which is not achievable directly in AD.

Thanks Matt, I really appreciate your positive attitude :)

In fact, I'm not used to Illustrator at all, neither other drawing apps except for Photoshop. Being rather UX than UI designer, I use prototyping tools more often (like Axure, for instance). So my point does not come from rather irrational "I am used to", but just from quite rational conviction that the same things should be achieved the same way. No more, no less.

Anyway, preference option, that would resolve this sometimes in the future, would be totally brilliant! :)

    Thanks for the rationale.

I still tend to disagree, though. When you select two elements with natural aspect ratio - like two texts - according to mentioned logic, both texts should resize proportionally. But they're considered a group and resizing is non-proportinal.

Moreover, it's hard to make such mental exercise continuously. For example, if I draw perfect circle holding Shift, I would consider it furher as a circle with "natural" aspect ratio 1:1. Yet it behaves like a shape without constant proportions.

Reverse example: if I resize artistic text horizontally or vertically alone, I wouldn't consider it "naturally" proportional further on. But it still keeps its distorted proportions when resizing with the corner point...

Hence I would prefer same sizing behavior for all elements, regardless of what they are.
