  1. Hi,

In LibreOffice I have the option to embed the fonts used in creating a document in the document file (for those interested, you'll find it under the "font" tab in the file properties).  This has as advantage that someone else working on that document can also work with the fonts used without having to explicitly install them - they remain contained in the document and are only available there.

Would it be possible to have such also available for AD and AP?  If not, is there a way to get a list of fonts used so it can be checked if they are available at any other party involved in the workflow?

    Thnx !  :)

Is PHlearn possibly reading this forum?

LOL - yes, the timing is, umm, "interesting" , also because this too features perspective and vanishing points (I've been led to believe that something is cooking on that front in Affinity so I won't nag any further - well, other than for a go at the beta  ;)  ;) ).

I'd also be very interested in a worked example of the shoe box used in the 1.5 demo, even if that is spread over a few videos to keep it structured.  I suspect I won't be the only one returning to that set a few times - there are so many uses for it..

The other benefit is that it'll be on Vimeo, which is FAR less infested than Youtube with advertising and tracking  ..

  3. Thanks for your feedback @Sarizaz and welcome to Affinity Forums :)

You can still download Carapace (by Epic Games) from here (this is only available for Windows).

That has gone 404 - it appears the domain owner suffered ICANN's not so bright "WAP" approach to domain name owner verification (just look at http://www.warrenmarshall.biz/ and you'll see the notice).  Just give it a few weeks until the site owner discovers the notification in his spam folder  :P .  Back to that topic: the video of this software shows a sensible approach to perspective management, it's clearly been developed by someone who spends a lot of time drawing in that space (if you pardon the pun :) ).  I'd say that AD could massively feature in that world too.

Hi all, there is another discussion thread on perspective tool, somewhat:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/25749-mas-15/?hl=embed&p=122323

Take a look @ this video, the software used was Carapace by Epic Games:

    http://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/perspective-grid-utility/

Both the iOS Procreate app and Carapace can create vanishing points on the fly. But it seems, in Carapace, the cool part would be to create/extrapolate perspective lines by tracing an existing object, 1:50 to 2:00, for example.

I think the power of AD would be welcome in the world of game creation, and adding this to AD would indeed be magical.

Anyway, I agree with your suggestion to move this discussion to the other thread you mentioned at https://affinity.ser...bed&p=122323:)

  5. At first when I saw the vid of Ash and the big blank wall, I was like, yeah I get this whole negative space thing but... then a few seconds in I was like, that's very cool. Not seen a tutorial put across that way before. I love it...

I agree.  One of the most impressive things that video put on the table was AD's speed as you could see it live on the screen as it was being done (amplified by the fact that you could see Ash having to wait for a file to load halfway through :) ).  That said, I would do something about picking up the mouse scraping sound - maybe use a cardioid boom mike (or return to computer GUI's first accessory, the mouse mat  :P).  Very well done, and possibly setting a new trend for the tutorial industry overall..

  6. Hi MBd,

Ash and Neil (our Creative Director) do all the promotional videos by themselves - concepts, artwork, script, editing, everything! - which is pretty darned impressive, to be honest!

    Thanks,

    Matt

Umm, are they for hire? :P  You've made me a double fan now, not just of the apps, but also of your own creative work because I 100% share the opinion of others that your marketing videos are *excellent* (I like the explainers too, but they're more "work" videos as they focus on one topic or process).

I'm busy with a startup, and AD and AP will already be part of the Mac default software loadset (can't use Windows due to fairly high security demands).  One of the things I'll need to organise is punchy marketing.  You guys reduced a veritable treasure trove of new features to 2 minutes of video without missing out much, which is an exceptionally rare skill in itself  :) .

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to have a look at all the videos to see what you've added to 1.5.  I might be a while  :D

  7. I would be VERY interested in a method to set a vanishing point, but I suspect that will not be easy as AD will need some indication that you're busy drawing a horizontal that need to comply with the angles that a vanishing point dictates - I think drawing VP-related lines is almost going to be separate functionality which has to mesh (sorry) with the mesh and warp tools too.

Meanwhile I'll just do this old school ;) .

To quote Ashleigh Brilliant: "I have no solution, but I admire the problem."   :P

  8. Hi,

Affinity Designer is supported by a comprehensive set of video tutorials, produce in-house by the Documentation team!

The video tutorials are available on the affinity.serif.com website:

    https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/tutorials/designer/

    [..]

If you'd like to comment on anything related to this tutorial set, please reply to this pinned topic.

Quick question: do you keep this list up to date?  AD 1.5 adds a wonderful metric tonne of very useful features (it's what I would call a real upgrade :) ), but as a non-designer I know I'll need a bit of help with the new ideas and your videos are *excellent* (I use them when I recommend Affinity to others, I personally think they do more to sell Affinity products than even your wonderful promos do).

Apropos promos - the format of the AD 1.5 features introduction video was inspired in its simplicity, I liked the personal touch and seeing the product live.

    Cheers!

  9. There is also a little brother to the Logitech Master - the Anywhere MX 2 - that is a very good alternative.  I managed to get one for £47 on Amazon.  It has all the same quality and similar features to the MX Master, and works just as well.  It's pitched as a mobile mouse, but is just as good for desktop.

I have no problems with the new Apple keyboard.  I got the new Magic Keyboard with my iMac, but I didn't have any choice else I'd have probably gone for the wired full keyboard.  I actually use cursor keys and the numeric pad a lot, and having it wired is not really an issue (plus you get two handy USB ports).

Totally agree with the Anywhere MX mouse (v1 and 2), with added bonus that the Darkfield tech also works on clear glass (makes a nice work surface but it's a pain with any mouse except a Darkfield one).  The benefit of using a wired keyboard is that you can fit the Logitech receiver in one of the USB ports so it's as close to the mouse as possible so there's never any problem with device interference.

  10. Just came across an interesting challenge: I was trying to warp an object that was positioned almost diagonal (about 35º).

This emerged as a challenge for the current warp system (or quite possibly my understanding and use of it): it's exclusively aimed at horizontal and vertical warping.

When you set warp points, they form a grid that has a mainly horizontal and vertical focus which meant fudging to get the distortion I was looking for.  Instead of being able to rotate the warp grid basis and just tweak what I wanted, I had to rotate the image first, warp what I wanted and then rotate it back.

I know that warping and mesh are mainly aimed at perspective corrections (hence the horizontal/vertical focus), but adding some form of rotation of that base orientation could offer interesting new possibilities.

(and yes, I'd love to see this in AD too, but one thing at a time ;)  ).

  11. Nope, in same cases there are reasons why I use the cursor keys instead, but they don't initiate any canvas scrolling.

Zoom in, click an object (say, a circle) and move it with the cursor keys - when you hit the edge of the viewport/screen, your object will happily carry on moving beyond the edges (so you won't see it, but it's still moving as long as you use the cursor keys) without the canvas scrolling to keep up with it.  Try the same with a mouse and things will start to scroll when you reach the edge.

  12. While I was cooking up some white vector drawings for a design which eventually ends up on a dark background it became clear that an ability to set the display colour of the "blocky" transparent canvas background would be very helpful.

At present I use a locked dark background layer to work on, but I was wondering if I overlooked a setting somewhere that allows me to make that "blocky" transparent background a lot darker (for instance, by making the greys used in the block pattern much darker so it is still clear it is the transparent canvas).

    Anyone?

Note to self: find a way to auto-follow topics I post, I keep forgetting to tick the "follow" box :).

  13. Hi,

If I have a bezier node somewhere, is there a way to drag the bezier "handles" symmetrically on both sides so that the curves on both sides of a symmetric object match?  A bit like you can scale an object from its defined centre, is there a way I can drag a node handle so that the one on the opposite side is the same length?

Shift - Cmd doesn't seem to apply there.

    Cheers!

  14. As irony would have it (as I started this thread), I bought it but haven't used it much either.  My challenge is that it wants to create its own picture store which thus unhelpfully doubles the amount of space that my images take, and it's not good enough to act as sole repository.  I like the idea of choosing on colour, but first of all it doesn't really allow you to change colours of select "nearness" of colour, and I need a bit more than just a sole selection criteria when I'm choosing images.

At present, I tend to load in a set of images I want to work with and zap the library afterwards (it's not the software's fault I'm short of local storage, of course, but it's unhelpful  ;)  ).

So much for a "best of xxx" tag, must have been a boring year  :P .

    The search goes on..

  15. Hi,

As you are no doubt beavering away at making Affinity products even better (and I can't wait to hear of any update on any DAM and DTP products, hint  ;)  ;) ), maybe it's time to throw this into the mix: meta data handling.

Especially those that work commercially need to make sure their meta data is set correctly as that often influences how the work is archived, retrieved, distributed and sold.

This means different things in different formats (in PNG and JPG it would be stored in PCT/EXIF tags, but PDF has quite a few fields too), but there are some common themes: artist/author, copyright holder and maybe distribution.  Where possible a freeform field would be good where the meta format allows, because you could use that for library markings (which could help with a DAM retrieval mode, for instance).

To use this, you'd need facilities to set and edit these fields, and a way to template an optional default.  At present there's nothing for that in the AD/AP export facilities so you end up having to reprint/edit PDFs and run the venerable exiftool over images to add the data.

    Cheers!

PS: I'll be in London next week - if any of you guys venture into town I'll buy you a beer  :P
